South Africa v. India First Test, Newlands

Too bad Jadeja is supposedly out with viral fever... he would have been very handy on the dryish pitch...

My starting XI

Dhawan, Vijay, Pujara, Kohli, Rahane, Rahul, Ashwin, Saha, Bhuvi, Shami, Ishant...

As a gamble, I'd pick Bumrah over Ishant...He may provide the X-factor.

They did pick Bumrah..... who looked a bit one dimensional in the red ball version...

Anyway, he was quick enough... touching 145 kmph...on occasion...

India given a dream start by Bhuvi... but weak support from Shami who looked a bit underdone...He looked better later in the day...

Kohli underbowled Ashwin. India let SA wriggle off to 286... they should have been restricted to around 200

Indian batting was a case of over aggression instead of real quality bowling by SA...

all three wickets were GIFTS....

But with Kohli opting for Pandya... the Indian batting line up looks a bit weak... I'd have much preferred Rahane and Rahul over Rohit and Hardik...

Pandya is proving his selection right. He has had an excellent game so far. The top order is letting India down again. Hope they bat well in 2nd innings. I am hopeful about Vijay, Pujara and Rohit.

What Pandya showed is that the DEMONS are more in the MIND... yes the pitch is not easy to bat on... but that shouldn't mean TORTOISING... or OVER AGGRESSION.... rather a judicious mix... but body language and ATTITUDE is VERY IMPORTANT...

Kohli is also OBSESSED with pace...and is SERIOUSLY UNDERBOWLING Ashwin...with the pitch bouncing like it is... and dry...he could be a handful...

Also, Shami has been under whelming...

You think pitch is difficult to bat? Most of the wickets were gifted, right? Even Bhuvi and Pandya got out to rash shots.

Yes the pitch was difficult to bat...as there was lot of bounce and unpredictable lateral movement...but if you followed the principles of playing close to body and watching the ball and playing late it was not unplayable...

Btw, not a single India batsman has a decent back foot technique... This is where someone like Tendulkar was so special...despite playing on slow low Indian wickets he had an amazing back foot game...

The pitch freshened up under the covers... and India bowled South Africa out...

If Kohli was a bit smarter...(a la Ashok Mankad) he would have delayed bowling out the Saffies...but totally dried up the runs....

If India started their batting after tea on the 4th day... the pitch would have had sufficient time to ease out a bit.... and even chasing a few more runs... India could have made a stronger showing... Anyway, the problem was the lack for match practice...

Only Bhuvi was on song the first day... Shami was undercooked in the first innings...

Indian batting had NO CHANCE to acclimatize to the conditions... oh well... at least Pandya prevented total humiliation...

Kohli cancelled the warm up game siting batsman friendly pitch which will be unlike test pitch. Instead he opted for practice session wherein he will have freedom with pitch.

Also South Africans never field a decent side in warm-ups. This should be taken up by BCCI.

Rahul/Rahane for Dhawan/Sharma possible, they definitely need Rahane there in the middle....

24 needed with a bunny coming in at 11? No problem!

Not sure about either of them. Rahane wad not in form and Dhawan has scored runs.
And Rohit has shown lots of promise lately.

Rohit has NO technique for moving ball..he is like Laxman...except even less competent against late moving ball... has tremendous hand eye coordination and timing...probably better than Laxman...definitely better for lofted shots...

So in places like West Indies, Australia where there may be bounce but not much late movement (except if it is a Day/Night Test) then guys like VVS and Rohit can do well but in places like England, NZ, and some grounds in SA they will not do well... (check VVS' record in England, NZ, versus in Australia, West Indies if you don't believe me)

But otherwise KL Rahul should be playing at No. 5... generally if No. 1-4 do OK then No. 5 comes in around the 2nd New Ball...and if they do poorly he can tackle the newish ball too...

I think Rahane has messed his technique up trying to be ODI T20I player... Guess it's his choice... as IPL pays huge money...but otherwise he needs to go back to a season in Ranji or County cricket to get his technique sorted out again.

So Rahul for Rohit seems obvious choice. But given team management's affinity with Rohit, it is unlikely that he will be replaced.
Also, should Ashwin be replaced by a batsman? Who will that batsman be?

Jadeja should also be available for selection now.

World No. 3 bowler (Jadeja) is not in Indian line up... plus he is pretty handy with the bat and an absolute cracker in the field...very strange...
