Can we not get any financial assistance for drainage?

Richard Gould was interviewed yesterday on Sky regarding The Oval and he stated that the ECB provided £75K for works there.

Or is it just the test grounds that are eligible for this?

Re: Notts ,Notts and more Notts
Grockle 18 August, 2011 19:20
Simon was eligible to be called the Head bod from a long time ago and definitely after the Frosty case had been settled.

The post they made Phil redundant from could have been re-introduced within a 3 or 6 month period anyway.

Maybe he should be called 'least junior Groundsman' !

I see, thanks for that.

Is another issue we have not the quantity of groundstaff?

As a rule we seem to have 3 for championship games, yet Monday we had 6, was this purely because it was on tv?

I know there is a limited amount that can be done when it rains but BR's issue seemed to be with the drainage, would we not be better off with more groundstaff to aid the mopping up when it becomes possible?

Sure there are a number of staff/helpers who could be rounded up if they were given the righy instruction.

Lets hope the ground work starting on Friday 16th Sept has desired effect this year!

This is the first I have ever heard of a purported 'drainage problem,' at Taunton.

I was under the impression that we had a reputation as a quick drying ground?

Perhaps the problem is more related to the outfield than the drainage per se?

Has anyone else heard these sort of complaints about drainage on our ground prior to this season?

P.s. Norwich - I think any county can be given a drainage grant but it's a competitive process. I've a feeling that Worcs were given one but then as a frequently flooded ground, I would suggest that New Road would genuinely have a greater need than Taunton.

I don’t remember seeing six on Monday! I am willing to be told differently.

There was the normal three, Simon, Martin and Dan plus Rob from the Taunton Vale Ground.

Normally it is the first three as in this match to pull those heavy wet sheets around.

Re: Notts ,Notts and more Notts
AGod 18 August, 2011 19:46
I looked this up and according to a cricinfo article dated Feb 2008, the ECB has a massive wad of cash which will be used to 'install floodlighting at every County HQ ground and improve drainage at all international venues, with subsequent roll-out to all Counties.'

Re: Notts ,Notts and more Notts
Clarence Parker 18 August, 2011 19:49
I thought that I remembered something written on here about the ECB granting money (or not) to Counties for drainage works to their grounds.

I uncovered this from the ‘Taunton AGM’ thread from last November, whence Grockle reported that Richard Gould had said : -

“We are very pleased with the wicket this year and the team this year did a great job (as, Richard pointed out, did Frosty for a number of years). We were the fourth or fifth pitch in England. The outfield should be better next year as well after the work on drainage this winter. It won't be completely flat but it will be less 'bobbly'. We got no grant for drainage even though the ECB has done that for every international ground (about £800K each).”

The fact that we are not a Test Match, or a ground yet accorded One Day Internationals (and let’s face it there are ten of them), may be what Brian Rose was alluding to.

I may be wrong but im sure that at one point 3 covers were being wheeled off at once with 2 pushing each one, i may have got it wrong.

Clearly there's a balance of not wanting to have too many paid when often not needed but if its drying up which is part of the problem then would more bodies not help, i apprecaite only so much that can be done after large amounts of rain

Re: Notts ,Notts and more Notts
Norwich SCCC 18 August, 2011 19:54
Cheers AG. Yes, I would not begrudge New Road a grant given the recent problems there.

Marcus alluded to the onset of the problems being as a result of the recent develoment of the ground and it is clear a long term solution is needed.

Re: Notts ,Notts and more Notts
AGod 18 August, 2011 19:54
Yes that's clearly what Brian meant.

If the intentions expressed by the ECB in 2008 are still 'current,' then roll-out to the non international counties should, presumably, be imminent?

Re: Notts ,Notts and more Notts
Mike TA1 18 August, 2011 19:55
AG, you are correct Taunton has always been known as a good draining ground, even today there was no water to be seen lying on the outfield.

When the flats were built it was thought they may cause a problem but there is a drainage channel built along the bottom of the Somerset stand that takes the water away that runs down the stand.

Re: Notts ,Notts and more Notts
AGod 18 August, 2011 20:03
Did Marcus suggest that the grass seed for the outfield not taking was affected by the new building?

If the ground today was deemed too muddy for a resumption then that is presumably a direct consequence of poor sodding?

Re: Notts ,Notts and more Notts
Mike TA1 18 August, 2011 20:34
Wsm fan, I had a look at the record and you were correct in one respect they did have some extra help with the covers, it looked to me like it was from some of the Sky people who always make sure the advertising boards are correct, they are normally friendly and helpful.

I was in the groundsman area at the scheduled start time before the match got underway when the covers were taken off then put on again with only the four of them going it.

Re: Notts ,Notts and more Notts
Grockle 18 August, 2011 21:05
The outground is a bit of a mess and if it's supposed to be less 'bobbly' then I think something went a bit pear shaped.

Most people I've talked to expect some remedial work to be done over the off season to deal with a number of issues around the edges.

I can't remember the CC match involved last season, but I am sure there was the lose of at least one days play (and probably more) because the water couldn't get away. The Trescothick Stand having been built on the escape route.

Re: Notts ,Notts and more Notts
Mike TA1 18 August, 2011 21:21
Yes Grockle I should imagine it will be re-seeded again and this time I would think the ground staff will do it themselves.

They do have a machine to do it.

I have read that article on cricinfo and I could comment on a lot that was said, the only point I will make is even with extra drainage in I don't think we would have got anymore over played in the last two days.

Re: Notts ,Notts and more Notts
Mike TA1 18 August, 2011 21:59
Sometime it is very interesting to read some of the old threads, we discussed the outfield work when it was done.

One page I found interesting to read from us was on the “GROUND REDEVELOPMENT 2010” thread – link - [www.cricketnetwork.co.uk] reading page 43 reminded me what was said at the time.

Re: Notts ,Notts and more Notts
SheptonPaul 18 August, 2011 22:01
wsm fan: Rose talks about "excellent groundsman Simon Lee", not "head groundsman".

Also, the 2nd worst rainfall after Lancs wasn't about play lost this season, but about weather patterns in general, I think.

From when I used to regularly go to Taunton in the 70s and 80s, I seem to recall it being talked about as not draining very well because of the proximity of the river and the high water table.

I think we should offer the Nottinghamshire boys a load of leather jackets and a free ride on the WSR if they let us have this one.
Anyone got a spare jacket they want to donate to the cause?
I've got a parka, it's a bit grubby, but hey ho, they are Northerners after all.

And Pete flips one - off the glove says the umpire and off the trousers if you ask Pete.

137 for 6....bonus points looking as rare as rocking horse droppings.

And now Jos sees his off stump removed by Adams...147 for 7. George in for his first Championship innings.
