Another retirement:

David Lucas of Worcestershire has now called it a day.

Graeme Welch joins Derbyshire as Elite Performance Director.

Alan Richardson, Worcestershire, likely to retire and take up the role vacated by Welch of Bowling Coach at Warwickshire.

Would certainly make sense for Richardson.

A very good role for him to be able to move into.

Pretty bad news for Worcs, however.

Former England and Yorkshire batsman Anthony McGrath has taken on a mentoring role with his sole county.

McGrath, who captained the White Rose for part of his 17-year playing career, retired from all cricket at the end of the 2012 season, having featured 619 times for Yorkshire and on 18 occasions for his country.

Yorkshire captain Andrew Gale has signed a contract extension with his home county.

The 30-year-old has penned terms to keep him at Headingley until 2016, with the option for a further year.

Hampshire are likely to be without Neil McKenzie for the 2014 campaign due to family commitments.

McKenzie is a popular figure with the club’s faithful having prospered across all forms since debuting in 2010.

Kyle Abbott, the South African fast bowler who has signed for Hampshire as their overseas player for 2014, had two seasons with Clevedon in the West of England League in 2006 and 2007, and played for Somerset Seconds on occasions.

He was the leading wicket-taker in South Africa last season.

Former England and Yorkshire all-rounder Graham Stevenson died, aged 58, in hospital yesterday three months after suffering a severe stroke.

Stevenson, whose first-class career spanned from 1973 to 1987 and would likely have been a devastating Twenty20 player, featured in two Tests and four one-day internationals for his country in the early 1980s

Very sad news and only 58.

Durham coach Jon Lewis says they cannot afford cover for all-rounder Ben Stokes unless he gets a central contract from the England and Wales Cricket Board.

Stokes played four of England's Ashes Tests this winter, but the ECB has not yet upgraded his 'incremental' deal.

Northamptonshire have given their full blessing to Azharullah, Steven Crook and their overseas player Jackson Bird to seek IPL deals but losing all three would seriously hamper their chances of retaining a place in Division One of the County Championship for 2015. [www.espncricinfo.com]

That can't be good for the county, just imagine how we would feel if we lost three players for that length of time.

Re: 2014 OTHER COUNTY NEWS
Bagpuss 26 January, 2014 00:31
I think Northampton are being a bit canny - they keep the players sweet by giving them their blessing, but suspect they are thinking that the only one of the three with any chance of getting picked up in the auction is Bird.

Azharullah in particular will find it difficult because of the likely visa issues due to his Pakistani heritage (Azhar Mahmood is the only Pakistani player of recent times to have gained an IPL contract and he had problems obtaining a visa, in the end getting a visa which limited the cities he could go to (and therefore the matches he could play)

Re: 2014 OTHER COUNTY NEWS
AGod 26 January, 2014 08:58
Notts' supposed insistence that their players would not be allowed to play IPL anymore has been watered down to say that guys like Hales and Lumb can go if they get bought for more than a certain amount of money at the auction.

Re: 2014 OTHER COUNTY NEWS
nelliec 26 January, 2014 09:06
Would suit us as we play Notts at home in the CC on the 4th of may.

Re: 2014 OTHER COUNTY NEWS
Frome Exile 26 January, 2014 12:29
Notts' new approach seems like a sensible compromise to me: an attempt to ensure that if they are to lose these players, they are at least, having cost a certain amount, a little more likely to be playing than touring the stadia of India with a drinks tray!

Does Steven Crook really think an IPL team will buy him?

The worse players were famous though.

Re: 2014 OTHER COUNTY NEWS
AGod 27 January, 2014 09:32
Crook is probably hoping that the T20 win will draw some attention to Northants players.

I've no idea if he's putting in for the auction but one assumes that it would be David Willey that would be getting the lions' share of the attention though.

Re: 2014 OTHER COUNTY NEWS
SheptonPaul 27 January, 2014 11:03
Willey's injured and won't be in the auction - doubtful for start of the English season.

Re: 2014 OTHER COUNTY NEWS

Two pieces of news

Matt Walker has left his post as assistant coach at Essex to take up a similar role at the Kent where he spent much of his playing career before moving to Essex. Chris Silverwood takes over as Essex assistant coach

Charlie Shreck, released by Kent at the end of the season, has been signed on a one-year contract by Leicestershire.

I see that Essex are having two captains this season, one for four days and one for one day matches.

seeing that Marcus is carrying on being captain wouldn't that be a good idea for us?
