You seem to miss the financial point, ag.

The ECB dare not deduct points from a county playing on a Test match ground, as it would call into question the viability of that venue to stage Test matches.

Outcome - a fall in hospitality revenue, sponsorship and ticket sales, especially for the fourth and fifth days by which time the general public might have the perception that there wouldn`t be any cricket anyway.

Re: 2014 OTHER COUNTY NEWS
Grockle 30 April, 2014 09:56
But surely the pitches won't improve for the Test's if they don't punish the ground CJM.

Therefore the ECB loses revenue anyway as the international game is over in less than 5 days.

Unless of course the message they give out to the reading and reporting public is different to the one they give the internal management and groundstaff of the Test venue

The last occasions I can remember of counties being docked points in the County Championship for a substandard pitch was in 2011 when both Warwickshire and Hampshire (who were in the first division this year) fell foul of the spitch inspectors.

Both are international grounds, Edgbaston a long-standing Test venue so I don't think your theory that its the smaller county grounds which the panel is more likely to treat harshly holds up.

Gloucestershire will, I believe, start this season's T20 competition with a two-point penalty issued when they were adjudged to have prepared a subtandard pitch for their T20 match at the Cheltenham Festival last summer.

FWIW my theory is not so much that its a big grounds versus the little grounds problem but that the pitch panel seems far more accepting of wickets tumbling to the seam bowlers. Heaven help the county who prepares a pitch that offers noticeable spin on the first day, or if it is the spinners who mop up the wickets.

And we wonder why there is no obvious successor to Graeme Swann

Agree completely, Bagpuss.

Re: 2014 OTHER COUNTY NEWS
Bagpuss 02 May, 2014 14:23
Nottinghamshire and England T20 opener Alex Hales is going to Worcestershire on loan for a month.

Re: 2014 OTHER COUNTY NEWS
SheptonPaul 02 May, 2014 14:30
Good player to pick up on loan! Presumably available in all formats?

Re: 2014 OTHER COUNTY NEWS
Bagpuss 02 May, 2014 14:33
Notts Twitter account now saying its a 3 match loan and he'll return to TrenBridge for the T20 on 18 May

I would never have thought they'd loan him for the T20 competition - not only is he ranked one of the best in the world, Worcestershire and Notts are in the same division.

Re: 2014 OTHER COUNTY NEWS
SheptonPaul 02 May, 2014 14:41
Ah, makes more sense!

Re: 2014 OTHER COUNTY NEWS
Frome Exile 02 May, 2014 14:56
I guess this makes Hales much less likely to feature for England in any format other than T20.
If Mick Newell deems him surplus to Notts' requirements in the Championship, then that is one selectorial vote he's unlikely to get for the Test team.

Re: 2014 OTHER COUNTY NEWS
Grockle 02 May, 2014 15:13
It might not be he is 'surplus to requirements' but difficult to integrate in at the moment with possible England calls etc. Notts may be doing this as a short term fix to KEEP him rather than lose him.

It must be difficult when you have someone like this and can't see where he fits presently.

I wonder if it was ever considered with Jos as a way to keep him happy ref glove work while the position was thought through and discussed long term

AGod 02 May, 2014 15:16
Notts had already (earlier this season) move Hales down the order.

Having said that, he did make a reasonable score at his new spot in one of their early games.

Re: 2014 OTHER COUNTY NEWS
Tumbles 02 May, 2014 15:36
Presume he won't play on Sunday then - he had been added to the 14 man squad originally.

Re: 2014 OTHER COUNTY NEWS
Bagpuss 02 May, 2014 15:45
Worcestershire have named him in their side for Sunday too! He's going to be busy!

Loyal of Lhasa. 02 May, 2014 16:08
In CC matches for Notts in 2013 Hales made only 251 runs at an average of 13.94. I find it hard to understand that a player can apparently be so good in one format and so poor in another.

Well without checking I think he normally opened for Notts in the championship. I think he would be far better suited coming in at number 6 in the longer format.

Re: 2014 OTHER COUNTY NEWS
Bagpuss 02 May, 2014 18:22
Tom Lancefield has signed for Glamorgan for the rest of the season.

Lancefield came through the Surrey age groups but was released by the county in 2012. Last season he played for the Unicorns.

Re: 2014 OTHER COUNTY NEWS
Bagpuss 02 May, 2014 18:55
Essex have signed bowler Oliver Newby on a month's loan from Lancashire

Re: 2014 OTHER COUNTY NEWS
chunkyinargyll 02 May, 2014 19:03
and Tom Helm has gone from Middlesex to Glamorgan for a month.

And straight into their first team squad.

Re: 2014 OTHER COUNTY NEWS
cricketjerry-mouse 03 May, 2014 17:43
Why so many loan signings so early in the season?

Oliver Newby, who made his Lancashire debut 10 years ago, seems to spend more time with other counties than at Old Trafford.

He was on loan with Nottinghamshire in 2005 and three years later with Glo`shire, where I believe he made a favourable impression - but not enough to sign him permanently.

What's happened to Gary Ballance, scoring prolifically for my fantasy team, then ...............

Re: 2014 OTHER COUNTY NEWS
Bagpuss 04 May, 2014 21:17
He's been called up for England team to play Scotland in the ODI at the end of the week - all the England team were withdrawn from their county matches (I too have him, and James Anderson, Moeen Ali and Chris Jordan - maybe better do some transers tomorrow!)

For a month, apparently.

New honour for Jade Dernbach today - captaincy of Surrey.

Dernbach is leading the side at Canterbury as Graeme Smith`s daughter is ill and he has been called away from the ground.

No doubt Peter Moores and co. will have taken note.

Re: 2014 OTHER COUNTY NEWS
AGod 06 May, 2014 12:52
Oh dear.

I think that's (at least) the second such recent instance as there was a day during the SA vs Aus series when they said Smith had been up all night with his daughter ill.

Re: 2014 OTHER COUNTY NEWS
chunkyinargyll 06 May, 2014 13:10
Middlesex 100-1 at lunch.

Nightwatchman Harris the only one out- so once again it's the Rogers and Robson show.

Can't escape the feeling it will only take one wicket for Warwickshire to be through to the tail.

I believe a major part of the reason for his retirement from international cricket is that his little girl has significant, ongoing health issues.
Cricket is nothing compared with family.

Nothing could be truer than that, FE.

Let us send Graeme's daughter and his family all our best wishes at this time.
