I think that this may have been one of our 'Old Boys' :-

"0-0-8-0

The spell that inspired this week's selection came last week during the Asia Cup in Mirpur. Pakistan's experienced slow left-armer Abdur Rehman came on for the 11th over of the match against Bangladesh - and bowled three high full tosses. One was smashed for four, and another was caught... but it didn't count as a wicket, as all three were ruled no-balls on height. After the third one, the umpires suspended Rehman from bowling, and Fawad Alam had to complete (or, really, start) the over. Until then, the weirdest bowling figures in international cricket probably belonged to England's David Gower who, with the scores level, playfully threw the last ball of the second Test against New Zealand at Trent Bridge in 1986. The umpire called it a no-ball, Martin Crowe smashed it to the boundary... and Gower came off with figures of 0-0-4-0."

Not to be compared with that other much greater old boy's much greater 8-8-0-0.

Graeme Smith announces his retirement.

As of the end of this Test.

Bit sad, I think, as I think he still has plenty of miles in the engine. Obviously turning Surrey around is enough of a challenge!!

India's Supreme Court has installed former captain and batting legend Sunil Gavaskar as the interim head of the country's cricket board.

He replaces N Srinivasan who was asked to leave his post during a probe into spot-fixing and illegal betting in the Indian Premier League

Marcus in frame for England selector
cricketjerry-mouse 16 January, 2014 14:44
One former and one current Somerset captain are said to be in the mix to take over from Geoff Miller as an England selector when he retires shortly.

Brian Rose and Marcus Trescothick have both been sounded out, but the only candidate yet to put in an official application is Angus Fraser, director of cricket at Middlesex.

Also in he running are another ex-Middlesex Test player John Emburey, and Durham director of cricket Geoff Cook.

It strikes me that Rosey and Emburey are the most likely. Fraser has already said he would want to remain as DOC at Middlesex as well, and Cook is in the same position at Durham. As for Marcus, he has emphasised his wish to continue playing time and again.

Whoever gets chosen, it seems they have to check any common sense at the door and forget everything that made them candidates in the first place.

So I personally hope neither of the Somerset men go anywhere near it.

I think Geoff Cook has stepped down from any day-to-day responsibility for first-team matters at Durham. So he might be a fair pick.

But I'd go with Brian Rose... it would be good to have someone from outside of the Test-ground mafia.

I'm not convinced that having a current player as a selector is a brilliant idea, although at least that way one could be sure that the selector would not be distracted from watching the play (!)

Rose or Cook for me - then Marcus when he hangs up his boots (unless he's working for us!)

The job involves overseas travel!.

What a great job, I'm tempted to apply. But worried about the unnamed salary though.

If Rose wants it, he'll sort England out.

Re: Marcus in frame for England selector
Grockle 17 January, 2014 04:37
Well he spent years trying to sort SCCC out SLC snd only partly managed it. I'm not sure he'd find England such a cinch.

I would like to see an umpire on the selection panel; someone who sees, day in day out, the merits and demerits of players.

Re: Marcus in frame for England selector
Bagpuss 29 January, 2014 22:28
Even better - make it an anonymous umpire-selector, sort of like the Stig. Might make players treat umpires with a bit more respect!

i thought he was saying that the squad was weaker on the bowling front as CK was a wicketkeeper as well as a hard hitting batsman.

Subtle difference which might not make him a fool.

AGod 22 March, 2014 09:42
Except that Wright is a complete liability as a bowler anyway!

Re: CK going to T20
Grockle 22 March, 2014 09:50
Finallly. Well Craig has the chance. NOW he needs to prove the faith some of us have. He has to make himself irreplaceable.

From Agnew's view maybe we should have let them take Pete instead!!

CK and JB on song in the middle with 8 overs? I'll enjoy watching that. If he plays...who keeps? Gilo - decisions decisions. He He He.

You already answered your own question in your post of the other day, Grockle. After last season, even if AGiles privately thinks CK is the better keeper, he simply can't/won't hand him the gloves unless JB is hors de combat.

Yep AG that was my question, I still can't wait and see.
