And when Pete returned the captain was Langer, I believe, which was probably ideal. Or is my memory playing tricks on me?

Re: 2014 SCCC PLAYERS OLD AND NEW
AGod 08 May, 2014 22:28
I don't think any such tricks are being played.

Your memory seems to be working well enough, Bobstan, but I still don't think we have confirmed whether PT left of his own accord or whether his contract was not renewed.

Re: 2014 SCCC PLAYERS OLD AND NEW
Grockle 09 May, 2014 06:16
At the time it seemed a bit of both. Pete seemed to think he was under used and the club were of the opinion that widening the doors for Trego access was a bit of a financial burden. In the end IMHO Pete's belief in his own ability turned into reality BECAUSE Somerset didn't listen then and allowed him to go off to Kent and the Minor counties and come back with a desire to do the job properly.

This suggests that the departure was 'by mutual consent'

Former Somerset seamer Gemaal Hussain, who wasn`t retained at the end of last season, is currently on trial with Nottinghamshire, where if I remember correctly he has family links.

Some might suggest that if you're on trial with your sixth different county, at the age of 30, that you need to find another career.

Jamie Cox sacked by SACA

A bit surprised at Jamie (assuming the allegations are true).

Re: 2014 SCCC PLAYERS OLD AND NEW
Grockle 25 May, 2014 17:16
Doesn't seem to be much room for movement in the story unfortunately so unless Jamie comes up with a different story to the one that seems to be coming from more than one Aussie body....

Frome Exile 25 May, 2014 17:29
Doesn't speak of any outright rule-breaking though, does it?
More a case of actions contrary to the spirit of a code of conduct?

Re: 2014 SCCC PLAYERS OLD AND NEW
AGod 25 May, 2014 17:34
There are alleged breaches of CA rules relating to the BBL vis-a-vis player recruitment.

South Australia are claiming that Cox broke their own (internal) policies and procedures and citing such as grounds for his dismissal.

Re: 2014 SCCC PLAYERS OLD AND NEW
AGod 25 May, 2014 17:36
Have to say that it also sounds as though there has been almost routine breaching of the recruitment rules by most or all participating "franchises," in the Big Bash.

Re: 2014 SCCC PLAYERS OLD AND NEW
Grockle 25 May, 2014 17:45
Isn't a code of conduct which imposes fines for breaching it a sort of set of rules? And if you break it don't you tend to get the sack?

I don't think the article implies Buzz is a criminal, just someone who did not abide by the rules set out for a person in his position by the overseeing body..

Yeah: just desperately trying to give the benefit of any doubt to one of our own, who I always thought was basically a good bloke.

I agree, FE. In fact he seemed to me to be a man who personified integrity in his days with SCCC.

Well nothing is definite and it is only one side but as I said earlier, unless he talks there is little leeway in what is there presently.

It does seem out of character though.

Here's a strong suggestion that Mr Cox has been most unlucky to have been singled out for a "crime," of which many seem to be guilty.

Re: 2014 SCCC PLAYERS OLD AND NEW
Grockle 26 May, 2014 12:43
Well if the 'crime' is defined as such and Jamie has been doing it then it makes him guilty however many others have also been doing it I'm afraid.

Don't do the particular 'crime' and you can't be singled out I suppose is the best advice.

Re: 2014 SCCC PLAYERS OLD AND NEW
AGod 26 May, 2014 12:48
Indeed. Although, of course, the problem is that if everyone else is doing it and you absolutely can't trust the authorities to deal with the problem (which seems to have been the case for the first few years of the BBL) then one leaves oneself at the risk of a significant competitive disadvantage.

Re: 2014 SCCC PLAYERS OLD AND NEW
Grockle 26 May, 2014 14:57
While maintaining your honesty, integrity and reputation of course. The end result may well have been the same but your character would be intact and unimpeachable

I see that Steffan Jones has signed for Bedford Rugby Club.

Probably not our Steffan - although in his pomp he would have been almost good enough to have played for Bedford!!

No. I wonder whether he does any rugby coaching at Wellington.

Jamie Cox sacked by South Australia
sheffieldsabre 27 May, 2014 11:08
Those of you who remember our esteemed former captain might be saddened to hear that he's been sacked by South Australia (where he's been the coach for several years) for allegedly breaching player recruitment guidelines for the Big Bash League (the Aus 20/20 competition).

Cricinfo piece

Adelaide Advertiser piece

Personally I have to say I reckon he's been scapegoated for something which is very common. Four different state sides have been fined for the same thing without sacking anyone, and if you look at the number of player signings which have been announced every year on the very first day of the recruitment period, it's obvious that many negotiations have been going on outside of the time window.

The Adelaide newspaper piece's casual mention of a falling-out with captain Michael Klinger seems illuminating, or am I reading between the lines too much?

Anyway, I refuse to believe that one of the game's gentlemen would do anything underhand. I hope the furore dies down soon and he gets himself a new job.

Ah, sorry, I obviously wasn't paying attention!

Still think it sounds like a stitch-up though ...

50th ODI dismissal for Jos, today.

50th dismissal on one side of the stumps; rather fewer on the other!
