I will see what I can do Grockle.

I can only include those who were at the press day plus Petersen so some will not be included.

I had already cropped the head and shoulders ready to do a new squad photo a while ago and I deleted the folder by mistake when deleting others, unfortunately it wasn't in the recycle bin so they were lost.
I have to use my other computer because the computer I built (my main one) doesn't have the software on it to do it.

May be the end for Kirbs and may prompt alf into his white ball cricket thoughts again . A good reliable bowler who will complement the 2 overtons mesch and Gregory well I think !!

Nickname TG - how on earth did they manage to come up with that? Clever, though.
I'm not totally convinced that Tom Graveney would have wished to come to us, much as I should have loved that - assuming that Graeme Pollock is unavailable, of course.

I was appalled to hear Craig O being called 'Goober,' vs Sussex.

That is the exact same nickname that is given to Jamie.

Even allowing for the spectacular lack of originality inherent in sports, using the same nickname to refer to each of two twins sounds woeful!!!

No hurry from your end Mike you have enough to be getting on with. I was talking about me having a go. But not until after the Notts CC match as I'll have to do it at Bicknoller Towers and am not there until next week now.

I understand the Kolpak effect, but why have there been so many players with South African links playing for Somerset in recent years? Is it just coincidence?

Re: 2014 SOMERSET RELATED NEWS
AGod 21 June, 2014 08:13
They (SA) were one of a very small number of cricket playing nations to which Kolpak applied.

So that was the first factor, IMO.

More recently we now have a man from SA in charge of our cricket - and most people like to hire people that they've enjoyed working with before e.g. Myburgh.

In a couple of cases (Mesch/Kies) I think it is just a fluke.

Re: 2014 SOMERSET RELATED NEWS
North Berwick John 21 June, 2014 08:50
I take your point about Dave Nosworthy AG, but the proportion of SA players in the squad is higher than average, so the Kolpak argument is weakened, and this predated Dave Nosworthy.

Re: 2014 SOMERSET RELATED NEWS
AGod 21 June, 2014 08:58
I'm not sure the Kolpak argument is weakened - some counties were more active than others in pursuing Kolpaks.

With the great ARC nearing the end and not a lot coming through at the time, then I think that was the catalyst for bringing in Alf and Charl through that route.

One other slightly flukey element is that when Kolpak regs were tightened such that many counties lost their Kolpaks, some of ours had married English ladies so could not legally 'be sent home.'

I vaguely remember ex players like Jimmy Cook recommending players to the club, if not him somebody else.

Is the fact that Millfield and the Taunton schools attract pupils from around the world a factor?

Apologies to any schools omitted, eg those at Bruton and Tiverton.

Edited to eliminate stupidity.

Tim Groenewald ran through the Somerset first innings (103 all out) with 5-33 at Taunton last season, despite being kept up for several nights previously by a new-born baby.

He also scored 42 runs without being dismissed in what at the time was a very real relegation match. Must like Taunton, if not sleepless nights.

AGod 21 June, 2014 11:15
In the game at Derby, if I remember rightly, he and Palladino shared all 10 wickets in the Somerset first innings.

Perhaps it's bowling against Somerset (or at least the inept 2013 batting version of Somerset) that he likes.

The gates are open this morning at the CG, there are still some equipment to be removed from the car park left over from the concert but not much.

There is some damaged to the concrete by the Cow Shed where the heavy machinery entered the outfield.

From a distance the outfield look reasonable except the grass is very yellow where the stage and behind the stage that was covered with boards, it is being watered by the ground staff this morning.

Was the Rod Stewart gig a big success?

Have we had any reports on here?

After looking at some of the photo's in the above news report though - dare I ask how the ground & outfield have held up ?

I don't think we did too badly out of it either!

Not sure we allowed the use of our ground totally for free!?

And 19,000 eating and drinking I think may have made us a few £££'s.

If a bit of yellow grass and a little bit of dodgy concrete is the damage I think the club will think it a small price.....

Re: 2014 SOMERSET RELATED NEWS
Mike TA1 21 June, 2014 16:24
I think you will be correct WSM Fan, the food vans would have paid the club to be there plus I should think all our own outlets would have been open, plus hiring out the use of the ground in the first place.

No food or drinks could be taken into the ground, there were several people eating their food before entering the ground.

Neither 'Mesch' or 'Kies' were ever kolpak assets as far as I know. Both are dual nationality Englishmen.

Just pointing out to those who seem confused sometimes that a South African name can mean absolutely nothing in relation to kolpaks.

Tonight's imminent loss for Glamorgan keeps 4th spot right up for grabs.

7 games to go, I think 4 wins may well be enough especially if we can beat Glamorgan next week. Essex will be tough Friday, but with a bit of rain a point may be good from that one.....

Last night when I entered the Somerset web site it had a new look about it, a few minutes later when I reloaded it the look was back to the old site.

They must have been testing a new web site.

It was hard say because when I press a link it lead nowhere, that was why I reloaded it.

I know somebody said the Rod Stewart concert was for a good cause and it was a very good cause, that the club was correct in allowing it to be held at the ground.

After seeing the outfield yesterday for the first time since it happened you must feel for the groundsmen who put all that hard work into the playing area during the winter weather.

All the commence this year saying it was the best the ground has looked for years since the outfield top was removed.

Judge for yourself.

That line stretches from the entrance by the groundsmen hut (Tractor's corner) all the way to in front of the Cow Shed.

I am not complaining about the concert being held it just saddens me to see it like that.
