Indeed, Grock. However, I shall bear this crushing blow with my customary fortitude!

Bath kicked off the season with a friendly against Werrington from Cornwall played over 45 overs with a short boundary on the clubhouse side. The forecasted sunshine never materialised and the weather remained cloudy and chilly all day. Bath batted first with James Campbell and Alex Barrow putting on 138 for the first wicket in 22 overs of which 41 were extras. James Campbell was first out for 62 then Alex Barrow was out caught at long on for 91 hitting three sixes. The innings of the day was by Somerset Academy player Tim Rouse who hit exactly 100 not out off 62 balls with 8 sixes one of which went straight through a window of a mini-bus parked in the car park shattering the glass. He hit 23 off the last five balls of the innings with 3 sixes a four and a single of the very last ball. Bath finished on a formidable 339-5 with extras finishing on 54. Werrington never got close to Bath’s score closing on 156-8. Next Saturday play another home friendly against Sidmouth

Bath played hosts to Sidmouth in a 50 over friendly game before a crowd of around 200 swollen by Bath Rugby supporters who came to watch their team defeat Worcester 32-20. The game was played in mainly sunshine but the temperature remained chilly. Sidmouth batted first and reached 261-7 with Josh Bess topscoring with 73 and his brother Luke hitting a rapid 50 not out off 30 balls with 3 sixes. In Bath’s reply they quickly lost two wickets for 37 before last week’s heroes against Werrington - Alex Barrow and Tim Rouse added 153 for the 3rd wicket with Alex scoring freely on the legside and Tim scoring freely on the offside with square drives off the back foot. After Alex was out trying to pull a ball that stopped on him which ended being caught just behind the bowler for 106, Tim was out LBW for 71. There was then a mini-collapse when 4 wickets for for 37 before Bath’s captain Lloyd Davies finished the game off with just over 4 overs remaining with Bath 263-7. Josh Bess was Sidmouth’s best bowler with 4-57 off his 10 overs of seam. Next Saturday Bath play an inter-club friendly before the league season kicks off on 3 May at home to Frocester.

Bath kicked off the league season with a home win against Frocester. On a glorious sunny day in front of a large crowd of around 150 Bath batting first reached 213-9 off 50 overs. Top scorer was 17 year old George Hankins (currently at Millfield) with 57 backed up with 30’s from Alex Barrow, Sam Mount and captain Lloyd Davies. The Frocester bowling was tight and only 5 wides were given away. On paper Frocester’s batting look strong with numerous Gloucester 2nd players – Michael Beard, Uzi Qureshi, Nick Trainor, Jack Taylor, Paul Muchall and Sam Bracey but Bath’s Adam Kelly (2-12 from 8 overs) and ex Bridgwater Tom Drake (1-11 off 10 overs) proved difficult to score off. Frocester looked favourites at 85-2 off 24 overs but Jack Taylor looking dangerous was LBW to Adam Kelly for 23. Frocester then folded to 149 all out in the 44th over with top scorer Nick Trainor 8th out for 35.

I went on a wild goose chase looking for a club game to watch. After heavy overnight rain on Friday night and blustery showers on Saturday morning the omens were not good. My first port of call was Knowle v Taunton (off) then Bristol v Bath (off). Next stop was Old Bristolians v Wembdon – when I got there the covers were on and players were milling around so it didn’t look promising for a start. I then headed off to Bedminster with the possibility of watching Australian star Ian Harvey making his debut against Frenchay (off) then it was Brislington v Midsomer Norton (off). My final stop before heading back home was Keynsham v Glastonbury. When I arrived at 2.00 the game was well under way with Glastonbury 44-3 off 18 overs. The outfield was soggy but the players and umpires were keen to get the game going. During the next two hours play was interrupted 4 times for a short sharp shower withe no interruption lasting longer than 5 minutes. The match was reduced to 40 overs. Needless to say batting conditions were not easy and Glastonbury struggled to 82 all out in 39 overs. Keynsham’s two left arm spin bowlers Rich Wilton (3-16 off 9 overs) and Sam Wheller (3-22 off 8 overs) were the main wicket takers. With a small target to chase Keynsham reached 83-5 off 29 overs with opener Tom Bancroft topscoring with 27.

Thank you once again Keith for your report. You certainly 'did the rounds' looking for a game that was in progress.

Does anyone know if Charl Willoughby is playing for Weston - super - Mare this year, as was disclosed during the winter?

On the hottest and sunniest day of the summer the match at Bath v Taunton St Andrews finished at 4.00 with Bath winning by 6 wickets. Having opted to bat first TSA were soon in trouble at 6-3 then 12-5 then 35-9 off 15 overs. It was only Somerset 2nd X1 wicketkeeper James Regan who showed any resistance scoring a fine 69 with some strong legside drives and one memorable six over long off. TSA recovered to finish on 95 all out in 27 overs. The three Bath seam bowlers were far too good for TSA with numerous catches going to slip – Adam Kelly with 5-22 off 9 overs, Lloyd Davies 3-43 off 8 overs and Tom Drake 2-21 off 7 overs. In Bath’s reply left arm seamer Lloyd Alley took 4-34 off 7 overs with two LBWs in one over and a loud appeal for another LBW in the same over. Bath were rocking at 55-4 but lost no further wickets as Lloyd Davies saw them through to victory with 32 not out. Alex Barrow was dropped twice behind the wicket hit a big six over long on then was bowled by a fast yorker from Lloyd Alley for 14. With the early finish I opted to pop in to Keynsham on the way home where I witnessed a last ball thriller as Corsham 2nds were chasing 188 to win against Keynsham 2nds. It all cam down to the last over bowled by ex 1st skipper Simon Knowles with Corsham on 184-6. The first two balls were wickets, the next ball they scored 3 then a dot then a single so the scores were level with one ball left. With the field in close the batsman managed to penetrate the field and win the game. Jubilation all round for the Corsham team.

With Frocester’s game against Bridgwater called off Bath returned to the top of WEPL Prem 1 with a victory over Downend by 4 wickets with eight balls to spare. After being put in on a dry wicket with a very lush green outfield Downend were all out for 219 in the final over. Top scorer was New Zealander Matthew Bracewell (nephew of Gloucester coach John) with 58 supported by Callum Loud (40) and Curtis Blackemore (32). Neither of the two nominated Gloucester player Ian Cockbain and Craig Miles played. As ever, Bath’s best bowler was Adam Kelly with 4-34 off 10 overs. Captain Lloyd Davies’ first over was eventful with three LBW shouts (all turned down) three wides and a no ball. In Bath’s reply opener Robin Lett got the innings off to a quick start with 50 before being LBW. After looking safe at 153-4 in 37 overs Richard Pandya pulled off a brilliant caught and bowled to dismiss Tim Rouse for 29 then had wicketkeeper Luke Padgett caught behind first ball leaving Bath wobbling on 153-6. Then 17 year old George Hankins and Jon Green saw Bath over the line without losing another wicket with Hankins hitting the winning shot with a square cut for 4 leaving him 49 not out. There was a decent crowd of around 100 with quite a few making the short trip from North Bristol with the game played in cloudy conditions.

Thanks once again for your report, Keith.

I have to admit to being pleasantly surprised that a number of games that you report on, have crowds of between 100 and 200 spectators.

Some of these would no doubt be the families of players etc., but it is still encouraging to know that many choose to watch live cricket at club level, rather than do a myriad of other things.

Other games results only.

Alas all except one does not benefit from one of Keith's masterpiece reports.

By the way Keith, how many cars were there in the car park at Bath?

Two match reports for the price of one

Match 1 Friday 6 June Downend v Lashings. After a miserable three days weatherwise it turned out bright and sunny for the 1,000 spectators for this game. The batting line up for Lashings was Michael Carberry (59) Chris Schofield (130*) Ian Harvey (0) Hercshell Gibbs (2) Mark Alleyne (34) Martin Bicknell (8) Phil De Freitas (dnb) Devon Malcolm (dnb) Saqlain Mushtaq (dnb) and Gordon Greenidge (dnb) plus one guest. In a 30 over game Lashings totalled 253-5 while Downend were all out for 231 with Michael Bracewell topscoring with 50. Henry Blofeld provided an entertaining ball by ball commentary on the Lashings innings with emphasis on the various buses passing the ground and the obligatory pigeon.

Match 2 Saturday 7 June Downend v Frocester. The crowd for this game was down to around 50. The game started an hour late due to the early morning rain. The Downend staff must have worked incredibly hard to get the ground ready for the league match clearing up all the litter left behind after the Lashings game. In a 46 over game Frocester reached 226-7 which was a big recovery from 67-5. The evergreen Nick Trainor batting at number 5 came in with the score 38-3 off 10 overs. He was out to the last ball of the innings caught at long off for 89 which started slowly but accelerated towards the end. Paul Muchall scored a useful 48. Downend looked favourites to win at 116-3 off 25 overs but Paul Muchall took 4 wickets and Downend were all out for 194 losing by 32 runs.

Thanks, Keith, would you care to explain how on earth it could be that Martin Bicknell, Chris Schofield et al did bat and yet the formidable Mr Greenidge did not?

Thanks Stockwood. I was driving back along the M4 from Cardiff to Reading last night and a car with Lashings CC markings all over flew past me. I wondered where it had been - now I know!

Undefeated Bath lost their first league match of the season against their near neighbours from down the A4 Corsham. On a sunny day with a dry wicket favouring the spin bowlers, who found plenty of turn, Corsham opted to bat first and reached 188-9 off 50 overs. Their star batsman, big hitting Michael Coles, was out second ball for a duck well caught by wicketkeeper Luke Padgett from an inside edge going down the leg side. Ashur Morrison was also caught behind for a duck leaving Corsham on 7-2. Steady batting from former Keynsham player Paul Robbins with 45, before holing out on the mid wicket boundary going for a six, opener Toby Davies and captain peter Dennett, both with 31, meant Corsham batted out the full 50 overs. Five of the nine wickets were taken by the Bath spinners Simon Marchant (2-37) and Sam Mount (3-35). Incredibly there was hardly an LBW shout throughout the innings. Normally Bath are never shy in appealing for LBWs. Bath’s innings never recovered from the loss of Robin Lett (12) and Alex Barrow (18) both caught by wicketkeeper Steve Bullen off James Arney. Then Paul Robbins, with his left arm spin, took 2-15 off his 10 overs. Only Tim Rouse with 49 offered any resistance before being run out by his brother Harry who scratched around for 16 off 57 balls. The innings came to an end after 43.2 overs with Bath all out for 146 losing by 42 runs. Seamer John Parker finished off the tail with 3-11 off 7 overs. There was a decent crowd of around 120 including Bristol Rob who recently moved from Saltford to Radstock. Corsham brought some noisy supporters who made use of the bar facilities and were delighted with the result. One of the joys of watching Cricket at Bath is meandering along the riverbank by Pulteney Bridge then watching the crowds congregate outside the Abbey where there is usually some busking musical act. I even pumped £1.80 into the Bath economy by consuming a mint flavoured Magnum which was rather delicious.
