She may not have been unduly concerned with the first 18 holes...

Just so. And that's no story.

Under this sort of pressure, Grockle, what will the re-named site be called?

James Harris, who has been unable to gain a regular place in Middlesex's championship side returns to Glamorgan on a one month loan.

To be honest, the move to London hasn't worked out. It's hard to believe 12 teams were after his signature 21 months ago.

Re: 2014 NEWS SNIPPETS
AGod 16 July, 2014 23:22
It was not hard to believe at the time.

According to the Beeb lot, Fraser had told them that he would get something like 8 for nothing really soon because he'd been so unlucky.... I assume that was 'talking up your player,' nonsense?

Re: 2014 NEWS SNIPPETS
cricketjerry-mouse 17 July, 2014 00:21
James Harris` father has links with Somerset, and we certainly put in a formal bid when he decided to leave Glamorgan. I believe Somerset were second favourites for his signing at the time.

AGod 17 July, 2014 05:44
I see Middx have an even longer break in their CC schedule than we do - play up at North Marine Road, starting at the weekend, then no gain until Aug 31.

Hearing that Somerset's Alex Barrow is 12th man for England at the Lords Test match today...well done that young man.

Re: 2014 NEWS SNIPPETS
cricketjerry-mouse 17 July, 2014 09:13
Alex always played second fiddle to Jos Buttler during those amazing record-breaking opening partnerships at King`s College, when Jos was named Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year.

So it is nice for him that he has made the England dressing room at Lord`s first (if only as 12th man).

Just a thought - will he also have a role as Jimmy Anderson`s minder?

Re: 2014 NEWS SNIPPETS
MisterMurph 17 July, 2014 09:48
I don't think Jimmy needs a minder!

I am not personally convinced that Somerset would have succeeded into turning him into a consistently - performing Division 1 bowler, if Middlesex appear to have failed to date in this respect.

Maybe the lad has been slightly homesick and, thus, might have done a bit better less far from the Valleys etc?

He was a good bowler for Glamorgan.

Re: 2014 NEWS SNIPPETS
chunkyinargyll 17 July, 2014 12:40
There have been suggestions James Harris has deliberately altered his action in an attempt to gain an extra yard of pace.

In other words- If he had continued to do what he had always done, he would probably be doing better than he is at present.

It must be a big decision to change things. Always the danger that in attempt to make yourself 10% better you end up making yourself 20% worse.

A valid point in the article is that sheer speed (90mph+) isn't everything- but England usually aren't interested in anything below 85mph (which is why he felt he needed to change things).

Re: 2014 NEWS SNIPPETS
SheptonPaul 17 July, 2014 13:03
Maybe an England bowling coach told him to change - it's been known (or at least alleged - Finn and Joverton spring to mind).

Maybe Saker is a secret agent?

Re: 2014 NEWS SNIPPETS
AGod 17 July, 2014 14:01
Young bowlers that are taking loads of county wickets should ignore any advice to make major changes, IMO. With occasional exceptions if you are taking loads of county wickets you probably will get a chance in international cricket at some juncture.

If you make changes because you think the national selectors will only consider one type of cricketer and it goes wrong, then you risk no longer being a very effective county bowler, jeopardising your livelihood and - other than in bizarre circumstances, you've no chance of an international career if you are no longer taking county wickets.

Thee days promising young bowlers are being influenced directly by the England set-up long before they get to the point in their career when they will be 'taking loads of County wickets'

Re: 2014 NEWS SNIPPETS
AGod 17 July, 2014 17:31
Harris was already taking plenty at Glamorgan.

I took Chunky's post as meaning that the suggestion of change came after he moved to Middx.

Re: 2014 NEWS SNIPPETS
AGod 17 July, 2014 17:36
Incidentally, Harris was also quite strong with the bat at Glamorgan but seems to have done little in that dept at Middx either.

Somehow the news of the death of Gary Gilmour [www.telegraph.co.uk] last month had passed me by.

Some of us recall that George was only partially innocent...

His son, Clint, was my club's overseas player for a year not that long ago. We had some tremendous times that year - especially replaying videos of that World Cup. Clint tragically died before his father, of brain cancer, aged 33.

Didn't he die in prison many years ago, donating his eyes to medical science and prompting the punk classic 'Looking through Gary Gilmour's eyes' as performed by The Adverts in the late 70's?

I didn't know he played for Australia.

I've been following this match [www.espncricinfo.com] with great interest, as it has ebbed and flowed remarkably - and it could still go either way. I am very pleased to see that Vermeulen, now in his mid-thirties, is playing cricket at a reasonably high level again - and it is his century that has given his side a chance of an unlikely victory.

I cannot help thinking that matches between international A sides are more deserving of first-class status than some sub-continent tournaments. The standard of a tournament in which Jadeja (Test batting average of 24.15) can score three triple centuries in eleven innings is perhaps questionable.

I feel we must salute the great Sangakkara on yet another magnificent Test innings: he currently has 202 runs against Pakistan. He has scored a mere 1365 Test runs in 2014 out of a career total 11,867.

I think the record for runs in a calendar year is about 1,600?

Angelo Matthews is also having a heck of a run of scores.

He's good at getting 90s! And yes, Sangakarra has become a phenomenal batsman...if he gives up the gloves, maybe Jos will be similar in ten years time.
