Not sure if we have all spotted this, note the last applicant on the list at the foot of the article!!!

However per this report he is denying having applied

Interesting stuff!

Looking at the list he has little chance of getting it but I'm slightly worried if his focus is off the next 6 weeks which is my sole interest in his immediate cricketing career!!!

Re: 2014 NEWS SNIPPETS

As I've said on the separate thread that was started about this, Dave's denial is not exactly of the "Don't ring me to ask me about the job, SL, because I definitely would not be interested," variety. More of a simple denial of the fact of his having made any kind of formal application.

I agree he wouldn't have much chance of getting the job if he had applied and was up against the people on that list, but if DN has not actually applied there's every chance that other "applicants," are also fictitious.

Sorry Geordie I didn't see this earlier. Can I ask we move anything about this to the thread set up until there is some kind of official denial from someone somewhere.

Thanks

The employment laws will be tested in an unexpected way this autumn when Peter Willey and George Sharp, two long-serving and respected umpires who face mandatory retirement at the end of this season, intend taking the ECB to a tribunal in an effort to prolong their careers beyond the age of 65. [www.espncricinfo.com]

Re: 2014 NEWS SNIPPETS
AGod 28 August, 2014 21:43
Perhaps Nick Cook could be retired instead of one of them, please!?

I cannot personally see a single logical reason why somebody should become incapable of umpiring a game of cricket the moment that they turn 65.

I assume all umpires have eye-sight and hearing tests annually, as a matter of course, and I'd also assume that there is some kind of 'umpire assessor,' as there is in the football?

Re: 2014 NEWS SNIPPETS
SheptonPaul 28 August, 2014 21:58
In football (top level), a referee used to have to retire at, I think, 47 (seems an arbitrary age to me) - I think there was a fuss a few years ago and it was changed upwards. Not entirely sure of my facts, but something like that.

Absolutely right to the year, SP.

For a long time I have understood that the average age for deterioration in men's eyesight is 47 (that certainly applied in my case). Perhaps that has something to do with it.

Some would say that cricket umpires are on day release from St Dunstan's, but I could not possibly comment.

Mine would have been 17, not 47!

Could you type a bit bigger, please, SP? I couldn't read your last posting.

Messrs Willey and Sharp will, in my opinion, be backed up by employment law and be able to continue.

Should this happen the ECB need to think hard about options for ex-players.

Re: 2014 NEWS SNIPPETS
AGod 30 August, 2014 11:13
To be honest the number of umpiring places relative to the number of people that leave the game every season is really rather low anyway.

Blackie will have to wait a few more years to get on the First Class List.

Congratulations to Zimbabwe, who today (yesterday?) beat Australia in an ODI for the first time in 31 years, and only the 2nd time in their history.

The man-of-the-match on that previous occasion was Duncan Fletcher.

If it wasn't for the sports pavilion in between.

Wonder if Essex might play their T20 there if this ever gets off the ground?

Re: 2014 NEWS SNIPPETS
MisterMurph 06 September, 2014 07:32
Essex had a cracking ground at Leyton, where the likes of Gooch, McEwan, and Lever all used to regularly play, but the ground has been let go. But you would think that there's a large proportion of Essex supporters who would be in easy reach of a ground in Hackney. Essex were considering the Olympic stadium I seem to recall.

Following Saeed Ajmal's suspension from cricket for an illegal bowling action, reports suggest that during testing none of his deliveries analysed came even close to the 15 degree limit, with some deliveries having a 40 degree bend in his elbow.

[m.apnews.com]

When he was tested back in 2009, the recorded straightening of his elbow was nine degrees. How do you not notice a change like that!

Tom Harrison, whose cv includes a brief period playing for Deerbyshire, a few years working for the ECB, ESPN Star Sports in Singapore and most ecently senior vice president at IMG, has been named as the new CEO of the ECB.

With the ECB at risk of imploding in the wake of the KP autobiography Richard Gould may feel he's dodged a bullet!

You don't notice if you are still taking wickets... isn't the rule now that you wait until the umpire notices.... it's not 'cheating' you see

Re: 2014 NEWS SNIPPETS
AGod 08 October, 2014 09:41
The KP vs ECB stuff does nobody any credit.

All involved look like utterly juvenile "tools," for want of a better description.

Re: 2014 NEWS SNIPPETS
Grockle 08 October, 2014 15:23
As I tweeted earlier. Who the hell cares. They are all gone; Flower KP, "Swanney", Prior. England have moved on and they are nearly all ex sportscelebs. let them whinge for a day and then let's turn the page and leave them to what is left of their careers or let them move on to their new ones.

Re: 2014 NEWS SNIPPETS
SillyMidOn 08 October, 2014 15:33
What I find most interesting is that much of what KP is saying chimes with complaints made on this very forum. That the dressing room is cliquey, that batsman were dropped after two bad games but bowlers get months. That certain faces don't "fit" (KP even mentions Nick). People have mentioned the playground aggression England have shown in recent years, etc etc...

And that "dossier" cricinfo leaked was laughable.

Grockle is right, all the key players have moved on and are off the scene but that doesn;t stop the institution of the ECB looking pretty bad.

Re: 2014 NEWS SNIPPETS
Grockle 08 October, 2014 15:49
It was pretty bad before SillyMidOn and the helping hand of KP was stopped from making any progress by the bullies he couldn't deal with. Now the crusading mercenary has gone another hero must stand up and be counted in the new regime. He had better read KP's book for hints on how to be a friend to all and blameless for anything that happens in his time

Yawn (Sm120)

Re: 2014 NEWS SNIPPETS

I see Ponting was trying to weigh in today to claim that "KP was right."

I somehow doubt that the England camp are in the habit of discussing their internal matters with the erstwhile Captain of Australia, but there you go.

Grockle 09 October, 2014 14:06
Based on the comments made on another thread AG I'm not sure you are the best person to comment on the things intimated by a person with limited access to information.

But HERE you seem correct. What info source is Ponting basing HIS certainty on?

Perhaps playing in matches against England, and observing things first - hand on the field of play?
