England Lions in Sri Lanka

Thought I'd start another new thread for this as doesnt really fit on any others.

Graham Onions has been called up as an injury replacement for the Lions squad currently playing in SL. As has been n oted, not sure how much England are expecting to learn about him. Some on Twitter have suggested he should tell 'em where to go!

I thought this to be a fairly silly move. And maybe a worrying one --- does it mean that there is absolutely no other younger player (about whom they might want to learn something) that actually could be called up?

But if I were him, I'd go, bowl my heart out try and make mincemeat of his hosts etc.

Surely he's GOT to be in very serious reckoning for the home tests vs SL at the start of the summer?

I don't think Bresnan really did enough with the ball to warrant a start, you can forget about Tremlett and, probably, Rankin and one assumes that Finn is probably now several months away from any kind of recall?

It may be a selection designed, in part, to remind James Anderson that he needs a strong response to a poor tour.

I think there's nothing wrong with Jimmy Anderson that a bl**dy good holiday won't fix. Hasn't looked the same since he bowled himself to his knees at Trent Bridge.

I quite agree, Bagpuss: but I still wouldn't put it past "new" selectors to remind him that there alternatives.

I'd have Onions in, of course, but wouldn't rule out Finn if he has a decent start to the county season, nor Rankin if Giles takes over...

Hadn't realised Lions games had started till today - see Lees, Bairstow, Plunkett and Kerrigan having a good game - are there any southern players out there? winking smiley

England Lions Sri Lanka tour fixtures

Mark Wood is the fourth bowler on the England radar that they have managed to break this winter - Jamie Overton didn't get past Loughborough, David Willey was diagnosed with a stress fracture whilst with the EPP in nAustralia, Reece Topley also suffered a back injury in Australia and now Mark Wood has left Sri Lanka with a side strain after just one match.

The England Women's Academy squad - including Somerset's Sophie Luff and Fran Wilson, and Devon's Jodie Dibble -are also touring Sri Lanka. Maybe we should call them the Lionesses.

They won their latest match today to take a 3-2 lead in the 6-match series. The final match is on Tuesday. Here's a lingg to the fixtures page where you can click on each match to get the scorecard.

I note that Mr Ali has chipped in with wickets in this match as well as runs. He often chips in for Worcs but, not having seen him bowl in a first-class match, I wondered whether he may or may not be conceivably up the job of being a 5th Test match bowler on those occasions when the first four bowlers are all seamers.

If he continues to do well with the ball on this tour then maybe he will come into the reckoning as somebody who can bat and could be a fifth bowler for the senior team under those sort of circumstances?

I think his chances are greatly improved after this winter, firstly wth the retirement of Swann and no obvious replacement (other than Panesar who the captain doesn't seem to trust) and also the promotion of Stokes, a genuine all-rounder in the raw, into the team.
