That ,makes extremely grim reading and hardly bodes well for the emergence of serious new talent. And, sadly, by not insisting on anonymity, the author may not have helped his son's career.

One wonders how many of these fitness experts have themselves enjoyed a long and injury-free cricketing career.

I am pleased to say I have not entered a gym since 1958 and have no intention of ever doing so again. I keep very fit by having plenty of normal exercise (walking quickly every day and tackling all stairs at a run and ensuring I stretch vigorously for my pint) and that should be quite enough for anyone. And, Mr Whittaker, I am still available to fill the vacant No 4 in the batting order.

Thanks FE - another excuse for a pic of Pietersen!

(I know it's off-topic, but for this article, they could have used a photo of ANY player, county or international, English or anywhere else in the world - or even a youngster - but no, they chose KP. And they accuse HIM of having the big ego!)

Very interesting article, nevertheless smiling smiley

SP - I suspect, without even looking at the article, and making a guess based on LoL's reply, that if the article is about a punishing fitness regime, then it may have been accompanied by a photo of KP due to the supposed disagreement that KP had with Cook viz-a-viz Cook supposedly having informed the team that they were not fit enough and that they should focus on that in between the 4th and 5th Tests....

Bobstan 10 February, 2014 15:33
Thanks, FE.

I think I find this article even more depressing than all those about KP and the ones about the ICC.

I believe I detect a head-burying in the sand coming on until Somerset CCC leave Elba to attack France. Have I got that right?

SheptonPaul 10 February, 2014 15:36
See the article, AG - there's no mention of KP nor of AC's call for more fitness work, nor any other excuse for using that image - that I can see...

AGod 10 February, 2014 15:41
I have now read it. The article does allude to some players questioning the regime during the "training" session... so I can still see what the thought process was of whichever cricinfo staffer was tasked with finding a photo to accompany the story...i.e that KP apparently questioned the need for England to have more fitness sessions..

(of course, it might also be that he has an easily accessible e-mail with every photo ever taken of KP immediately to hand after the past 7-10 days!!!0

I was going to put this on the KP thread, but maybe it sits more suitably here.

Stupid, stupid, stupid coaches.

How utterly ridiculous.... surely the sensible thing to do would be to take the guy on, on condition that he works to improve his fitness? (and then have your coaches spend some time working with him on it)

Presumably they decided this kid must be some sort of sloath otherwise he would already be really fit?

Re: A worrying piece about one parent's experience of county coaching.
SheptonPaul 10 February, 2014 15:56
(Sorry FE, I don't want to turn this into a column about KP, I know that wasn't your point - but there goes another myth - Jason Gallian was on Radio Five the other night saying that he did NOT throw KP's kit bag over the balcony at Notts - some of his kit, yes, but not the whole kitbag. Never let the truth get in the way of a good story...)

I could see no justification for the choice of picture either, SP.

Re: A worrying piece about one parent's experience of county coaching.
AGod 10 February, 2014 16:02
I'm really not sure that the difference between the Captain throwing some of one of his players' kits off the balcony, versus the whole bag makes any substantive difference to the story or the implication that lay behind those actions...

Shouldn't it be 'The Reject Maverick'?

One journalist commented on Twitter today that last year he met a 15yo boy just back from ECB agegroup personality testing!

All rather depressing.

No wonder the number of 'characters' in the game is rapidly diminishing.

Did Rupert William's son have his trial with Somerset, I wonder?

Well it is one possibility from 18 I suppose and quite a shame that we will never be able to do anything but wonder about it.

"English cricket’s fitness fixation is damaging our players’ ability to think for themselves."

I have thought so myself for many years.

AGod 15 February, 2014 12:39
Having seen much of the England batting and catching, I'm not really persuaded that 'an inability to think for themselves,' was the biggest weakness that our guys demonstrated Down Under.

I don't necessarily think that an excess of fitness work stops people thinking for themselves anyway. But it is obvious that the opportunity cost of tons of fitness work is the batting, catching and bowling practice that could otherwise have taken place.

Re: A worrying piece about one parent's experience of county coaching.
Grockle 15 February, 2014 12:52
Maybe we should look at it from the other side....English cricketer's weakness of character lets coaches ride roughshod over them.

A player is not guiltless in allowing himself to be "over-coached" surely. Devon had the solution.... I think the word 'enough' had something to do with it.

Maybe KP had it right?

Loyal of Lhasa. 15 February, 2014 13:12
That was fine for Devon but could hardly have worked for that young man who thought he was going for a trial.

I think, however, there is weight in what you say and it may be time for the senior players to rebel. They can't ALL be sacked.

Yes LoL I was thinking more about Mr Finn and others as much as I sympathise with them and the confusion the myriad number of theories must obviously create. Anderson said No as well I think.
