I see Buttler came in at 6 today in the warm-up game v the Uni XI, ahead of Bopara - didn't get any runs, but at least a sign they may be pushing him a little higher.

Engalnd 290-8 off 50; Root 104, Stokes 58.

Have to hope so for their and his sake

Surprised to see Jos Buttler described as the most overrated English batsman since John Crawley by a poster on Cricinfo today.

"Surprised to see Jos Buttler described as the most overrated English batsman since John Crawley by a poster on Cricinfo today."

I don't remember too much detail about Mr. Crawley, or indeed the media or public's aspirations for him, but I do consider that Jos Buttler's departure to Lancashire will not leave an unfillable hole in the Somerset line - up for the forthcoming season.

Re: England in West Indies 2014
AGod 28 February, 2014 11:57
In short-form cricket it will be a big hole, IMO.

Crawley is probably second to only Ramps in my lifetime, on terms of an inability to transfer phenomenal ability at county level into success in the international arena. He is almost certainly someone who would (in a similar way to Ian Bell) have benefited from the added security which central contracts bring.

Re: England in West Indies 2014
AGod 28 February, 2014 12:31
I think Crawley's failings were primarily technical (flaws vs pace directed anywhere other than his pads) whereas Ramprakash's problems were more temperamental.

I'm not sure that certainty of selection could ameliorate technical flaws.

Re: England in West Indies 2014
Frome Exile 28 February, 2014 12:39
And I think that's utterly wrong.
Quelle surprise, n'est ce pas?

Re: England in West Indies 2014
Frome Exile 28 February, 2014 12:46
Many batsmen struggle against pace when they first step up as there is more of it at a higher quality. Ramprakash did just as much as Crawley did: though neither of them struggled as much as Hick, but that's another story!!
All three would, IMHO, have stood a much better chance of prospering in the era of central contracts.

Anyway, back to the thread topic.
Moeen Ali and Michael Lumb make their ODI debuts, whilst Ravi Bopara plays his 100th.

Crawley was excellent - he'd have been great at Taunton. Media still talking about Jos being potential Test keeper - I really don't see that, unless general standard of English keepers (as keepers) has deteriorated alarmingly.

Re: England in West Indies 2014

I'm extremely happy with a one day line up that includes Craig K, Pete, Craig M for the fireworks and Nick, James, Alviro for stability. Marcus brings something else if it comes off.

Is there a big hole where Jos was? Possibly in one game a year. Can other fill that hole on their day? Without any shadow of a doubt.

Jos was another possible option for a good day but he didn't come off any more regularly than anyone else and I've seen more than one chip shot to fielder or playing all around a straight one.

Would I rather have him in a Somerset shirt? Every time.

Do I think he has made a huge mistake? Every day.

Do I hope I'm wrong? All the time.

Can we win games without him as effectively? No doubt.

Can we fail without him? No doubt.

Will that happen more often than when he was here? Not if the coach has got the side's head in gear - we can more than cover his contribution last year because the side must be more consistent as a unit.

Quite agree, SP.
I genuinely believe, all county bias aside, that Craig is best option to replace Prior (but only because I don't know of a young keeper as good as a Foster or a Read) and that now is probably the time.

Agree totally FE.

Craig is the most 'complete' long format wicketkeeper/batsman available at the moment IMHO.

Unfortunately that isn't what the English setup see him as and probably never will again unless he has a great start to the season in the CC.

Until I personally see the next level of Jos's development I honestly believe that at the moment he is a better series player in all forms than Jos.

JB has more potential but I've seen potential before and maybe that is the nature of the Crawley comparison.

However an ex poster from here in January (on another SN site) predicted that Matt P would be the next England captain and while I've never really agreed with his particular perspective on anything I am not sure that Matthew is totally done with international cricket yet,

Would that side be better and no worse with Craig K and Pete Trego where Wright and Root are I find myself wondering.

Dreams are made of this

No Morgan, knee injury - big loss (in this format).

Re: England in West Indies 2014
Frome Exile 28 February, 2014 13:31
Get the feeling it's precautionary, Shep, with bigger things in the near offing.

In the interval, Sky have an interview with Giles Clarke, who will, apparently, issue a "robust defence" of the restructuring of the ICC.

Hmmm! Watch this space!

And England are opening with Joe Root!

Re: England in West Indies 2014
Frome Exile 28 February, 2014 13:54
15 successive dot balls build the pressure, and a great catch from Jordan at short cover sends Powell on his way.
19-1.

Re: England in West Indies 2014
Frome Exile 28 February, 2014 14:12
Jos does very well to make a lot of ground to take an inside edge from Smith.
38-2.

Re: England in West Indies 2014
Frome Exile 28 February, 2014 14:19
Straight and full from Bresnan. Kirk plays all round it.
40-3.

Re: England in West Indies 2014
Frome Exile 28 February, 2014 14:33
Bravo jr. LBW propping forward to Moeen Ali.
Reviewed unsuccessfully.
45-4.

Re: England in West Indies 2014
Grockle 28 February, 2014 14:43
West Indies have been ripped asunder by injury and they can collapse even with the best at the crease. Have to agree with Bravo though in wanting to see a FULL Windies side on the pitch at the same time, especially in short format stuff

(Sm72)

Re: England in West Indies 2014
Grockle 28 February, 2014 14:49
I wonder how often a side have had the Windies at 2.74 runs an over in 19 overs at home!

There are lots of very slow and very low pitches in that part of the world - is this one of them?

Re: England in West Indies 2014
Frome Exile 28 February, 2014 14:54
Yes.

Re: England in West Indies 2014
Frome Exile 28 February, 2014 15:22
I have to say that, despite my stated belief that CK is the better 'keeper, so far everything I've seen from JB in this innings has been very neat and tidy.

Best one day figures from Treadwell
