I think the fact that Lancashire easily won the division 2 title last year, having ensured promotion with several games still to play, and won three more matches than any other team in the division (losing just once) may have a little to do with their odds. That and they were county champions less than 3 yrs ago.

And they have Jos Buttler to strengthen their side who you seem to rate as a significant loss to us.

Looking at the other site I see that the rain has followed the squad to South Africa, they did manage to get some practice indoors.

I hope Marcus while still in this country is also getting himself into match fitness. We need him in good form for the season.

Marcus is in London in the sky studio chatting about the WI odi's

Oh dear.

Reading the SCCC site report rather suggests this trip is turning into a very expensive net session !

Looking at Marcus in the Sky studio today, he seems to have lost some weight. This might be good news though I shall be more swayed by what happens in the first 2 friendly matches!!!

An expensive net session at a time where, by Murphy's Law, the weather here has turned around!

Re: Somerset in Africa
Grockle 12 March, 2014 12:04
But it was never planned to be anything else but a training/bonding trip

Re: Somerset in Africa

I thought they were, though, aiming for a number of "intra-squad" practice matches?

Re: Somerset in Africa
Grockle 12 March, 2014 20:32
Surely that is part of training isn't it?

(Sm72)

Re: Somerset in Africa
AGod 12 March, 2014 21:17
Indeed, but I imagine they are difficult to stage indoors and/or in the rain!

Re: Somerset in Africa
Grockle 13 March, 2014 02:48
So they train in other ways...still don't understand implied criticism of the trip.

They will have adapted, not sat on their backsides and watched it rain. For example they have an indoor process for simulating games for players over a day. Not ideal but it doesn't make the trip some kind of expensive failure as you imply.

Unless we learn that the sort of weather the Somerset squad has been experiencing is the norm for that part of S Africa at this time of year, and that the club did not take the trouble to find that out - unlikely given the nationality of Mr Nosworthy - I don't think one can rationally be critical.

I hadn't myself read any implied criticism in the comments people have made. The situation is just a little unfortunate, and disappointing for the players and management.

Re: Somerset in Africa
Grockle 13 March, 2014 08:10
Exactly Bob. The trip was budgeted for, I'm sure it was planned and probably "what do we do if it rains" might possibly have been part of that planning.

Nobody WAS 'being critical.'

If you look 'Murphy's Law,' was mentioned.

Re: Somerset in Africa
Grockle 13 March, 2014 17:55
Of course you weren't AG. Silly to expect you to be at this time of the year :-)

Isn't Murphy's law to do with toast and butter?

Is that a rule for life, Bobstan? If it is, I am hoping it gives me licence to indulge in my normal modus operandi, namely at all times to be never less than irrational in my criticisms.

Bobstan 14 March, 2014 18:27
Have I ever known you to be anything else, LoL? I'll give it all the thought it needs.

I've thought.
