Pre-Season Friendly Matches.
Mike TA1 18 March, 2014 21:54
The squad for tomorrows three day match against Worcestershire is -

The Somerset squad of 13 is – Alex Barrow, Nick Compton, Lewis Gregory, James Hildreth (V/C), Chris Jones, Craig Kieswetter (W/K), Jack Leach, Craig Meschede, Johnann Myburgh, Craig Overton, Callum Stewart, Pete Trego and Marcus Trescothick (Capt).

Play start at 11am, if you are coming bring your membership if you have it, the club want to test the scanners, you do not need it to get in for a friendly.

Chance for a few photos if I remember how to do it.

So Compton seems fit...

Interesting that it is the young seam bowlers, except the injured Jove, who get the first go. I wonder if either Steve K or Alfonso will be in the first team v Yorks. I shall be particularly interested to see what Craig O is like a year since we have seen him and also if Myburgh looks a good addition.

Yep, I was pleased to see NC name in the list.

Re: Pre-Season Friendly Matches.
Grockle 19 March, 2014 02:40
So Callum Stewart's position in relation to the club is?

On the edge I think Grockle, he only went to South Africa because Nick Compton was injured.

I always am this time of the year, I just hope it is not so cold as last season for the friendlies.

I am going to have a look where the pitch is.

I am excited too, but when does young Abell get his chance?

This is the time I miss each year. Those sparsely populated little games where you get a feel for where individuals are. Is anyone there who can give us an idea about how things are looking?

As an extra of course, it is also where we miss the internal ball by ball commentary as we used to do these games for the supporters in some form or other and now I doubt we'll hear from the BBC unfortunately.

There are four gaudy signs around the ground proclaiming "we Are Somerset".
We are 44 for 5.

Re: Pre-Season Friendly Matches.
AGod 19 March, 2014 12:31
One imagines that there is likely to be all kinds of residual dampness if not outright wetness underneath these pitches and that, unless we get a hot summer, that will probably be the case all-season.

So it wouldn't be a huge surprise if scores around the country this season tend to be lower than for some time.

In fact, given the relative volume of rain that has fallen in the South compared to the North, we might find that the customary North/South split in terms of scores will not exist this season.

My journey to Taunton held up as usual on the M6

Worcestershire won toss and chose to bowl.

13-a-side, 11 to bat/field. 96 overs in the day.

Somerset: Barrow, Compton, Gregory, Hildreth, Jones, Kieswetter (W/K), Leach, Meschede, Myburgh, Overton, Stewart, Trego, Trescothick*

Worcestershire: Mitchell, Pardoe, Kohler-Cadmore, Fell, Kervezee, Whiteley, Cox, Andrew, Choudhry, Russell,Shantry, Harrison

Good news is Tres top sc orer so far in the innings. Bad news is that score was 26 and most recent score I've had 44-5.

Barrow c Mitchell b Harrison 8

Somerset 69-6

Batting points are for wimps.

AGod 19 March, 2014 12:51
Unless he is otherwise engaged (University?) then I'm also somewhat surprised that Abell is not in the mix for this one.

Whilst Mike is obviously correct (based on info given on the club website) that Callum Stewart went to SA as a last-ditch replacement for Compton, I hope that his inclusion here is a sign that he is really banging on the door for a full contract.

He did have some excellent figures at times in the seconds last season and seemed an important part of their major turn-around in results.

You can never really have too many pace bowling options, IMO.

Re: Pre-Season Friendly Matches.
Grockle 19 March, 2014 12:56
And we don't seem to be getting them from anywhere else this season so he's a warm body if nothing else.

Early days. Try not to look at the gaudy signs CH though they are probably sited so you find them hard to avoid.

Do they have a '#' in front of them? If so, many will have no idea what they mean.

Gregory b Leach (theirs, not ours) 6

76-7

Really rather glad I'm not there yet!

Oh and its still University term-time.

This "3 day match," might leave ample practice time after its scheduled conclusion..

Re: Pre-Season Friendly Matches.

82-7 at lunch.

No time to report anything I am cooking my lunch.

Sad to say only the new scoreboard working today.(Sm164)

Warning: If you want to read the scoreboard, especially from across the ground, you will need binoculars. All out for 119, by the way.

Re: Pre-Season Friendly Matches.
Bobstan 19 March, 2014 14:47
It doesn't seem as if Worcestershire are being very friendly. I'm sure our bowlers are capable of showing that spirit of comradeship.

Re: Pre-Season Friendly Matches.
Bagpuss 19 March, 2014 15:32
I have some good news, and some bad news

First, the good news -
Somerset have a wicket - Mitchell c Trescothick b Meschede 9
Worcestershire 32-1

And now the bad news -
someone tells me that the band new shiny scoreboard keeps stalling.

It seems Mike you spoke too soon.

I hope the thing has a cast-iron warranty!
