Didn't take Prior long to get back on the (batting) bike - century apparently imminent at Hove.

Surely all the posts from 11.49 this morning, with the exception of AGod's at 13.00, belong to the Somerset Related News thread. This is not mere pedantry: Somerset's current match is merely another warm-up game, albeit a first-class one, and has nothing to do with the 2014 CC.

The season does not start until Sunday.ot

And I have not the slightest inclination to criticise Hildreth, who has scored more than anybody else so far.

I for one stand corrected, re 2014CC1. Perhaps it could just be renamed 2014 First Class Season?

However, I didn't criticise Hildreth, I said bright and breezy isn't what we want from him. Do you disagree with that? If every post is to be seen as a criticism, even at this early stage of the season, we're all going to be squabbling before April is out.

No more posts on 2014 CC1 from me after this till Sunday.

Squabbling's the norm!

You never know with these uni matches - JH may have thought he's already got runs under his belt pre-season, this is going to be a no-result draw and doesn't count for anything anyway, let's treat as a one-dayer - as may have some others or may have been a dressing-room decision. Either way, I'm not bothered one bit...

stevecav: I had absolutely no intention of getting at you in my comment about Hildreth. I just happen to be a massive fan of the man, whom I'd rather watch than almost any other batsman in the land, and I suppose I was just anticipating the flak that he might draw after another seemingly brilliant cameo.

Loyal of Lhasa: I agree with you about Jimmy H, but the man is capable of occupying the crease indefinitely, and scoring triple hundreds. And could well have done so for England. Their loss should have been our gain.

I just think these 'cameos' don't do him justice.

Apologies for posting this on 2014CC1!

Somerset's 2014 County Championship season will I fear produce more of the same as last year.

Nothing that has happened during the winter months has sadly given me reason to think otherwise.

Re: 2014 CC1 THREAD
Nailsea_Fizz 08 April, 2014 18:28
Not even a hint of optimism where the cricket is concerned Clarence ?

Re: 2014 CC1 THREAD
SheptonPaul 08 April, 2014 18:42
See ya then, Clarence. We haven't bowled or faced a ball yet...blimey!

Oh well...sad smiley

Re: 2014 CC1 THREAD
AGod 08 April, 2014 19:16
Clarence - what about the upturn in results that happened at the end of last season?

Surely that is more pertinent in terms of what we might expect than certain things happening or not happening in the off-season?

Re: 2014 CC1 THREAD
Clarence Parker 08 April, 2014 19:36
Last season was last season, and then we narrowly avoided relegation.

I did not forecast that we would finish lower in the table, just that the type of cricket played during the course of this season will probably follow similar lines to last year.

Big Jim 08 April, 2014 19:47
I predict...I predict a riot...no, sorry about that everyone, but I do predict we'll win the CC this season.
Indeed, I truly believe we'll win it in a hack canter, with Sussex as runners up and Durham in third place.
It's easy when you know how.

Please read the threads people. THIS is the CC1 thread.

It was discussing the FIRST ROUND of CC1 (we aren't playing in it so why Somerset are being discussed here is also beyond me).

If you want to moan about a competition we have not even started then please go elsewhere or start a thread.

If you want to talk about other counties playing in the actual round 1 then please stay here and discuss to your hearts content.

Re: 2014 CC1 THREAD
AGod 08 April, 2014 20:54
Because what was being discussed was our CC one prospects.

If 'CC One, means solely the current round of games, it would be as well for the thread title to spell it out. In the past such threads have nearly always been entitled 'Current round of CC1 games,' for example.

Re: 2014 CC1 THREAD
Grockle 08 April, 2014 21:09
Read the start of this thread AG. THIS is a discussion of ROUND ONE of the CC1. All explained.

You want to discuss our prospects, then start a thread about our prospects.

It's not hard - go to 'new topic' and it should be pretty obvious what to do from there.

It's what happens in the summer months that actually amounts to anything of real significance...

Grockle 08 April, 2014 21:34
And that starts in the SECOND ROUND which starts for us in a few days time and will be merged into this thread when complete... if someone starts a "CC1 Second Round" thread of course - AG maybe that could be you :-)

For the avoidance of doubt, it's a pristine sunny day here in London today, so now weather-related excuses for the Brown Caps.

No surprise to see Eoin Morgan fail again.

Re: 2014 CC1 THREAD
cricketjerry-mouse 09 April, 2014 13:09
Significant that, with Glamorgan needing 153 to win on a seamer-friendly wicket at The Oval having bowled Surrey out for 81, Graeme Smith has not trusted Chris Tremlett to open the attack or even come on first change.

Re: 2014 CC1 THREAD
SheptonPaul 09 April, 2014 13:16
...and that Surrey were bowled out for 81 without Allenby (in my fantasy team, top wicket-taker in the first innings) even turning his arm over!

Re: 2014 CC1 THREAD
AGod 09 April, 2014 13:42
Tremlett has become extremely poor. He was poor last season and his selection for the Ashes was a joke.

A bad day for Middlesex-heavy defeat and also apparently docked 2 points for a slow over rate.

You were right then, LoL, we shall be joint bottom after the first-round of matches but, by the sounds of it, only one point behind Middx with a game in hand!!!!!

Re: 2014 CC1 THREAD
AGod 09 April, 2014 14:46
Middlesex's form was not impressive over the second half of last season's CC1 and, with this start, one wonders if their 2014 season might mirror the second-half of their 2013 one.

I don't think I can remember a CC1 batting line-up that looked quite so heavily reliant on its opening batsmen for runs. 3, 4, 5 and 6 do not inspire much confidence, IMO.
