You're right, AG. Surrey and Loyal of Lhasa appear to be 'cheque book Charlies'.

A rather splendid show by super Glammy at the Oval, this could well be the start of a very big year for them.

Bobstan: Cash is perfectly acceptable, depending on the plainness and brownness of the envelope...

Gareth Rees, who contributed 75 to Glamorgan`s shaming 10-wicket win over Surrey at The Oval today, is the only first-class cricketer with a Double First in nuclear physics.

Perhaps Graeme Smith could have done with some of his brain power.

Whatever concerns we might have for this season must be nothing compared to the two metropolitan counties.
Middlesex had a poor second half to last season and this match v Sussex only reinforced their problems. For no batsman between 4 and 7 to get into double figures epitomises their worst problem while Harris and Rowland Jones both seem to have gone backwards from the promising start of their careers.
As for Surrey, their performance certainly did not suggest favourites for promotion, although I am sure Surrey followers will be comforted by the return of Jade Dernbach from international duty??!! I do notice that elements of the London press are now suggesting that Meaker is the answer to England's fast bowling problems and I am waiting with bated breath for someone to tell us that our friend Gareth Batty should be Graham Swann's successor.

I think young Mr Batty needs to attend a few more self-assertiveness classes before he qualifies...

If Gareth Batty gets picked then I would like to see Peter Trego keep him company.

Only one first class cricketer with a Double First in nuclear physics? Dear, oh dear. No wonder some of our Test players seem to get themselves out playing brainless shots.

For this round of games - other counties please. The Yorkshire game thread is for our game.

Centuries today for two England regulars, Bell and Cook, and one aspirant, Robson. Taking a slightly longer view, another aspirant, Vince, also scored a century.

I went with a Durham supporting pal to the game at Wantage Road today.

Very similar scoreline to our game. We saw more than 380 runs and 8 wickets in the day at Wantage Road.

With a below strength outfit then I'd think the home side will be delighted if they can avoid defeat to Durham. And it looks like it would need a lot of hard yakka for the Durham bowlers to win it because the track is slow and there is little lateral movement.

geordie moonraker 16 April, 2014 15:50
2 days later AG and the Durham bowlers are certainly giving it a go.

Re: CC1 Round 2
AGod 16 April, 2014 16:25
Indeed, that seems to be the case.

The first two days of that game closely mirrored that of our match at Taunton, but then things differed yesterday.

Re: CC1 Round 2
AGod 16 April, 2014 22:13
But Northants managed to hold on, GM. Looks like Borthwick took a quick couple to make the visitors favourites (wickets 8 and 9) but then the last pair held on for some time.

An encouraging start to CC1 life for Northants.

It looks like Sussex are going to be the team to beat this year, so roll on the Hove match at the end of the month, when we shall speedily expunge all memories of Horsham 2013.

A good start for Northants and Durham should not be displeased. I agree with LoL that Sussex look like the team to beat.

Re: CC1 Round 2
AGod 17 April, 2014 06:53
Sussex's spin bowling looks deeply suspect. So they may be hoping for a fairly damp summer.

Re: CC1 Round 2
Nailsea_Fizz 17 April, 2014 08:22
Well 2 wins out of 2 in the sunshine might suggest otherwise

Re: CC1 Round 2
Ronniesabre 17 April, 2014 08:30
Magoffin anyon and Jordan seemed to thrive though!!

Re: CC1 Round 2
AGod 17 April, 2014 09:29
Not really, Nailsea - both of their wins came after seamers ambushed an opponent and bowled them out for a pathetic score in the first innings. Presumably, there was quite a bit of moisture at the start in each of those tracks and they bowled first twice.

If it's a dryish summer then one assumes that there will be fewer tracks that start damp as the season wears along.

Remember also, Sussex started well last season before the wheels fell off in fairly spectacular fashion as the season wore on. At one point, I think they lost 14 games in a row in all cricket.

I, for one, will not be immediately rushing out to put a bet on them in the CC.

Re: CC1 Round 2
Nailsea_Fizz 17 April, 2014 10:58
Well maybe they will doctor their own pitches because they don't trust their spinners

Re: CC1 Round 2
AGod 17 April, 2014 11:15
Indeed they might.... but such a tactic relies on the flip of a coin and/or an opponent that wants to bat first on such a doctored pitch....

.. So they could be hoist by their own petard.

Re: CC1 Round 2
Grockle 17 April, 2014 11:28
I think the points still go on their total though, irrespective of how they are gained, so it is still 2 out of 2 at the start of the season. We'd be happy I think.

Indeed we would.

But probably not counting items of poultry.

Heard yesterday from a Durham supporter that their overseas player is Jawardena. Not apparently arriving in time for Sunday's match. This might be old news to some.

...or Sangakara?

It's Sanga.

Re: CC1 Round 2

No idea really, Mick said yesterday it was Jawardena. Apologies if this is duff gen.

Re: CC1 Round 2
Loyal of Lhasa. 17 April, 2014 14:38
Jawardena is not coming; neither is Jayawardena, neither of them. Nor is either Jayawardene. Nor is Sangakara, but Sangakkara is.

Not remotely important, but I just thought I'd mention it.
