The best thing I can do to help England is to make a prediction because no prediction I make on here ever bears any relation to the actual outcome. Here goes:

England will continue to get the worst of things in this series because Australia have the fastest bowlers, the best spinner, the stand out batsman by some way, and the shortest tail.

If they stay fit the Australian pace bowlers will scythe down our tail every time and quite possibly wear down our three inexperienced batsmen as the series goes on.

The only thing England can change about that is to leave out a pace bowler and bring in a specialist spinner.

England could bring in Jack Leach from the Lions (or see if Mason Crane can surprise us) for Jake Ball and Craig Overton for Chris Woakes to tighten the bowling but against the Australian attack the batting and the tail would probably look the same.

There you are England. I have done my best.

Athers is suggesting Ball may be replaced by Cove for the 2nd Test:

The big cricket news of the day seems to be that the Warriors beat the Lions by 6 wickets in the Ram Slam T20 challenge. YAWN

I have to say that apart from Somerset CCC, rugby and ski-jumping seem so much more interesting to me today than cricket.

I hope by tomorrow things will be back to normal as I don't imagine help is available on the NHS these days!

Although it's not the whole answer, getting Steve Smith out early is the obvious focus.

He averages about 40 from balls moving away and 70+ from those coming in.

From what I have seen he holds the bat with the bottom hand in a funny way getting more runs on the legside and shuffles his feet around the stumps making it difficult to know where to bowl.

Bowling short may tempt Smith to pull or hook it to a packed onside, but is likely to be expensive.

Mason Crane bowls right arm leg spin so going the other way.

I hope Australia don't bat first at Adelaide because there may be another run fest, unless Craig gets the ball to move away from Smith

If Craig had been bounced by Mitchell Starc the way Jake Ball was, I'd like to think he would have offered the bowler a bit more in return than just the insipid little smile Jake Ball embarrassed us with.

Ball looked like a man whose ambitions had been satisfied just by making the starting XI via avoiding the action in the warm-up games.

As I said before this tour started... by the end of this tour, we will have lost more matches than we have won under the Trevor Bayliss regime.

One would think that a team with Cook, Root, two productive all-rounders, Jimmy and Broad ought to have been able to do somewhat better than that?

I believe we had 14 wins and 13 defeats before the tour started, and I'd expect our record to read 15 wins and either 16 or 17 defeats by the time this series ends.

I tend to think that the coach and/or the selectors should probably be relieved of their duties.

And I should like to personally volunteer to give the news re: the termination of his employment to one Angus Robert Charles Fraser....

Well, as the title of this thread suggests, "Overton is over there" but is he any nearer to making his Test debut?

Nasser Hussain (just a journalist now I know) is advocating strongly that consideration should be given to Mark Wood or even the left-arm variation of George Garton for the Second Test.

He makes no mention of Overton. Is he slipping further and further off the radar? You need the Press to back you in order to push your claim for a rightful spot, but it isn't there at the moment.

Craig is well thought of by Root & Bayliss after his start to the tour.
Root said was very close call with Ball for 1st test and Ball did nothing with bat or ball so very much in reckoning for Adelaide.
No way Wood Curran Garton Stokes play at Adelaide for varying reasons.
Now Perth 3rd test could be very different but for Saturday its 4 seamers into 5 spots again. Injury permitting 3 are set in stone so huge 3 days to impress.....

If Overton is not picked for Adelaide (which would be a travesty), we may have to retitle this thread "Overton Over Over There". That would be very sad.

edited to makes the title a little less apocalyptic.

Cove marking out his run, according to Cricinfo. Congratulations and the best of luck, Craig!

I’m currently in Canterbury, NZ, but have failed to persuade my wife to detour to watch Stokes play against Otago tomorrow.

The only bowler to remove Steve Smith in this Ashes series! All we need now is Jove bowling from the other end and Leach all ready to bowl over No 21.

He looked like a man completely at home bowling to the Australian captain in front of 50,000-plus Down Under.

I know it's down to him, his own talent and his hard work, but it also says something good about his family, the people who've worked with him and Somerset CCC in general.

Congratulations to Craig Overton.

It is a great achievement to have been selected for a Test Tour of Australia in the first instance, and to be selected for your first Test and to take a significant scalp as your first wicket, are indeed huge bonuses.

If you never play in another Test (but I am sure that you will) you have achieved something that many young cricketers will never be able to claim.

Enjoy your moment of glory, but give thanks to the people who helped you get there in the first place.
