Yep, folding rapidly. As Lord's often flattens out as the game goes along, they would appear to be in a rather precarious position to me.

So.......... should we go into the final round of matches ahead of Middx on points, then one might guess that we'd attempt to produce something very flat for the match against them.

However.... how easy would we find that to do?

Yes, we used to produce myriad flat tracks at one time BUT that was before the new more efficient drainage system was installed.

We could try watering the track more than usual BUT .... if we get it even slightly wrong then wouldn't we be faced with the old style Taunton track where it does a fair amount for the first session or two, then flattens out? Obviously, Middlesex can oblige us to bat first.

Jarvis, who is generally their best bowler and might be well-suited to Lord's is on for Lancs now. I want Lancs to get through Voges/Simpson ASAP.

Yes, I'd expect them to fold in utterly tame fashion. They are, I'm afraid, a pitiful outfit.

Middx recovering rather well, now.

But if the pitch just goes totally flat they may still find themselves behind on first-innings as a result of all of the early wickets lost.

All of the other games now seem loaded against us. Yorkshire are flying, Hants scything through an Essex side who have probably, like Warks, lost interest with nada to play for. And Lancs in trouble at Lord's.

Edit - 6 down 86 for 6.

And unfortunately, that's were the fun ended, as Yorkshire have limped past the winning post.

That puts them on 145 points.

Salvation might be possible for both Somerset and Middlesex if Hampshire only take 5 points from their game against Essex (which would put them on 140 points)

An odd game

So far-

Hampshire 254 and 16-4

Essex 76 and 362

They now have 140 points- but have the easiest opposition next week in Warwickshire.

What appalling games there have been on the last couple of rounds. All these sides seemingly desperate to fight for that last relegation spot. Shame they didn't start that part of their seasons a little earlier. (Tic)

County championship thoughts for 2018

We can probably now say that we will be in the top flight again next year after a really gutsy performance by all in the last four games. This cannot, however, hide the cracks in our overall squad.Injuries,a lack of an overseas player, and unrest in certain quarters played its part but we just didn't have the quality of resources available to us.
Had we been relegated I would have been all for keeping with the likes of Byrom,Bartlett and Rouse. However now that we remain a first division club my thought have changed slightly.Out of those three Byrom has been the outstanding contributor, and looks likely to take over the mantle from Marcus for years to come.He is one good innings away from establishing himself as a permanent fixture.
I would love to see Dean Elgar return next year.At present cricket SA do not have any tests after the end of March.
Where do we play our captain 3,4, or 5 or more importantly where does he want to bat himself.Going by Hildys up/down seasons he is due to score at least 1000 runs next year.
The keeper and all rounder position will look after themselves , but has Tregs still got one more championship season in him ( 20 wickets and 800 runs ).
I still worry about our bowling line up staying fit, and also the fact we may lose Cove to England next summer. Is this the year Paul Van Meekeren breaks into the first team.
Personally I reckon we need to recruit a top 5 batsman,as well as an overseas batsman, and also a front line bowler capable of taking 50 championship wickets next year.Good luck with that Andy!! Any thoughts.........

A fast left armer a la Chas Willoughby would do nicely.

I suppose any new possible signings will now have to be put on the back burner until after the other rubbish is sorted out.

There's that rubbish.

Hopefully, Steve Rhodes can take on a good deal of AH's ECB work so that he can focus on what's needed here even while still physically at the ECB.

Realistically, we probably need to sign two batsmen and one paceman as you say, Nellie.

It won't be easy to find new recruits of proven quality so AH may need to back his own coaching ability (it's hard to believe he'll be totally hands-off on that score) and that of his staff and maybe sign somebody, such as Harry Podmore (on the bowling side) who hasn't quite made it somewhere else, and hope to polish them up a little bit.

Rouse and Bartlett were pretty unconvincing and we certainly shouldn't be going into next season with them as Plan A. Bartlett's technique looks better suited to a place lower down the order to me. Perhaps Trego will have a rebound season with the bat?

I think I said a while back that two batsmen and a bowler would be the ideal scenario, but if Lewis Gregory and Jamie Overton return from surgery and hit peak form (two big ifs, I admit) that would go some way to filling those berths. Hopefully now Somerset's first division status is confirmed that might help to get some interest.

The thing with Jamie Overton is, and always has been, this, so far as I'm concerned.

There are three possibilities:

a) He'll be fit and play really well.

b) He'll be fit and not play very well.

c) He'll be injured.

Items b and c help us not one iota.

In the case of item a) - if Jamie were ever to put a run of, say, six or seven games together in the CC in which he took a hatful of wickets, whilst bowling at nearly 90mph? England wouldn't be able to pounce quickly enough.

So, unless he comes back from this injury at reduced pace, then I don't think we will ever directly benefit all that much from his presence as any significant success would rapidly lead to England elevation.

Already looking forward to next season after what was a disappointing season this year. A new CEO who is making an excellent impression and a new DOC who was part of an excellent set up in his previous spell at the club.

In terms of signings I think we need two batsmen, hopefully one of these will be our overseas. Batting was clearly an issue last year and with Elgar gone, Myburgh only play one day games and Rouse and Bartlett looking someway of first division standard, we need to add some quality and depth to the batting.

I'd like to see a new all rounder at number 7, as Trego is clearly on the decline as a cricketer and I feel that 7 is a place to high for Gregory or C.Overton.

I don't think that the bowling needs any new additions unless Craig starts getting selected for England regularly then we may need to strengthen the bowling as otherwise you are relying on Jamie not breaking down and with his injury record that is a big gamble.

And cannot just wait to see whether Craig gets picked as, by then, it would be too late.

I suspect that - wrongly - the club might end up putting most or all of the batting woes down to the tracks that we played on... that we may not try to strengthen beyond an overseas because we will simply assume that many more runs will be scored on better batting tracks. But, let's face it, SCCC's propensity for absurd collapses long pre-dates the change in the surfaces at Taunton.

6 Essex players had averages above 40, we need the same. Eddie Byrom looked good with Tres, now Tom and Steve Davies are established. I hope George Bartlett's placement gives good experience on his technique. The overseas player is the key which should take pressure off the middle order and lift their averages. That will be a measure of the new management team and not the ability to appoint London lawyers

Maybe LC is intending to use them to sue Trescothick, Hildreth & co. for breach of contract in the event that they score an inadequate number of runs !

Is there any reason to suggest that Dean Elgar would not return next year , if as is looking likely,SA have little or no test cricket next summer planned.
