Two days after the tournament started Somerset are at the Oval this afternoon for their opening match.

Allenby (c)
Myburgh
S Davies (w)
Trego
Hildreth
Hose
Anderson
VD Merwe
Gregory
C Overton
Davey
Groenewald
Waller

They play a Surrey side shorn of their captain Gareth Batty and in form icon Kumar Sangakkara. The pantomime-villain-captain theme is maintained with Jade Dernbach elevated to the role whilst Aaron Finch is their other overseas player. They name same squad after victory in their first match at Chelmsford on Friday. Ben Foakes missed that match with a sore back and will have a fitness test today

Dernbach
Borthwick
Burns
S Curran
T Curran
Finch
Foakes
Meaker
Patel
Pope
Rampaul
Roy
Sibley
Stoneman
VD Bergh

I'm off to watch shortly as it's my closest ground. On paper we do have a strong team, but the worry is the time since some of them hit or bowled a ball in anger & Surrey have had a match already.

Still, can live in hope, anything can happen, & maybe a few of our players will have a point to prove

So, Myburgh doesn't make the final eleven in T20 either.

Why is he on the staff?

Answers on a postcard to Matt Maynard..

Anyway, anything over 160 is usually too much for us to chase at the Oval so, with 23 balls left and Surrey presumably set for 170-175 this doesn't look great at the mo.

Corey Anderson only one over? Already injured? Wouldn't be a huge surprise given his injury track record

Are we all sure that JM is not injured in some way? That would cover the reasons he is not playing. Not sure what the other reason is.

Well, he made the squad. Unless something happened in the intervening 24 hours, I assume fit.

A bit of a capitulation I'm afraid at 33 for 5 after 6 and a bit overs

Strange decision not to play Myburgh especially after the starts he got us off to in the 50 overs games. The first 6 overs are key in T20 cricket to getting a score on the board and Allenby, Davies and Hildreth as a top 3 aren't exactly going to strike fear into many opening bowling attacks. I think we have seen enough of Allenby's batting over the last 3 season to know that he's not really up to scratch, Davies has been even worse against the white ball than red ball this season and Hildreth could not get a game in the T20 last year and was dropped from the 50 over team this season.

Goodness, we're making a game of it - 12 penalty runs help

If fit to play anymore games, then I don't think we'll leave Anderson wasted at 7 again...

I think Anderson had to bat 7 because of the length of time he was off the field.
Sore back apparently.

My team for next match: Myburgh for Hildreth (was expecting Hildreth to perform in T20 when he's only just recovered his form in proper cricket really justified?), Davies Minor for Davies Major. Myburgh to open, Anderson up to 4 or 5, whichever Davies no higher than 7.

Not bowling their overs in time (6 runs per over)

Myburgh didnt play due to minor hand injury so hopefully he'll be back next match.

Often best to wait to know the facts.....

Myburgh picked up.hand injury so wasnt considered.

Corey had sore back. So only bowled 1 over as a precaution. Then as was off the feild couldnt bat until 7.

My god that was entertaining (which is what this format is all about at the end of the day). You could see the Surrey players looking up at the scoreboard with 3-4 over to go, realising they'd got into a pickle somewhat.

I can only assume they didn't give Somerset a hope of getting to that point of the game, which to be honest I didn't either. It was certainly fun when the crowd started to quieten down, but Anderson was maybe a bit reckless going for the 2nd run when he was run out, & maybe Davey should have refused a single on the penaultimate ball, but at least some of our guys made a game of it.

Thanks Baggie and WSM for clarifying those points, in the light of which some things make a lot more sense.
If Myburgh isn't fit in four days' time I'd still say give Hildreth a rest and give one of the youngsters a go.

Sounds like a typically amateur approach to the game.

Did we win?

A glass half - empty or a glass half - full?
Regardless, both glasses need filling up.

...aaaahhhh so that was the Somerset tactic - lose so many wickets early on that they are 1 - lulled into a false sense of security, and 2 - can't get the right number of overs in because of all the time lost when a wicket goes down, and then hit them hard at the end with a class batsman kept back for the purpose.
It nearly worked.

I think I must agree with Tom. Surrey certainly approached the game in a completely amateur fashion and were lucky to get away with it.

Yes, Dave, Hildreth a very odd choice at three given that he's never been an explosive player in this format and that, as you say, the opening six overs are surely vital. If he's going to play at all, then Trego would seem to make more sense in that role.

Glad to hear it was a good game even though it wasn't cricket.

Not the best of starts for Somerset, but hey ho.

Well, that was close in the end, but in truth we never looked anywhere near making a significant challenge. There were far too many errors and from a management point of view, why did we have three players with shirts with no name on?

We paid £99 plus vat for hospitality, which lacked professionalism in some areas, like no tea or coffee, scorecard or audible pa. It was like being in a room with the tv on but no subtitles nor commentary.

Really good support from our fans, but there was a huge gulf in class and sometimes in application, which is very worrying.

On a positive note, lacking from the unedited version, well done to CA for singlehandedly giving us hope.

Possible note to shirt suppliers unless you want to blame 'management' for personally not putting the names on shirts? The things these 'management' bods are responsible for these days eh?

So, will the narrow margin of eventual defeat be allowed to obscure the fact that, really, only two players - Anderson and VDM seem to have turned up for the party in game one?

We've been poor in this stuff in each of the past two seasons. In the pre-season preview Jim suggested that we'd ape what we did in the 50 over stuff 2/3 years ago and use the comp
as an opportunity to introduce some new players/young players to the first team. Since our established players had performed badly two years in a row then this seemed a perfectly reasonable plan to me. Then, Jim's immediate pre-tournament interview suggested that plan had been largely shelved, as did the subsequent team selection for this one..

The same old suspects were duly trotted out with similar results. Is Maynard, I wonder, going to re-visit his 'one game too many rather than one game too few,' mantra in spite of the fact, "really, that most have been poor for two years?

Perhaps the apparent original plans were ripped up due to poor CC performances with the thought being that the home crowd needed cheering up?
