Beware, Chopra, based on previous antics vs us, I'd say, even if his move to Essex has not really been a success.

What a difference a comma makes!

I hope that Somerset's performance is as good as the title of this thread.

He should beware, too, Wickham, as I'd imagine we'll be out to get him...

Unless there is something I don't know I judge we would like to bat first and bat long.

Essex win toss and bat. RVDM, Davey, Cook and Taylor the players to miss out.

Glad to see Meerkat given a chance.

Will this be Dom Bess's championship debut away from HQ or did he play at Yorkshire last season?

OK ,so plan B. We bowl like demons (O Colin where art thou) and then bat long starting at tea time

Except for the continued and idiotic failure to pick JM, I think the XI picked is the best one that we could have selected under the circumstances (i.e. failure to find an overseas, injuries to LG and JO).

I have no idea whether the Meerkat is good enough to potentially make a huge contribution to winning a CC match but, sadly, I think I've seen enough to know that Josh Davey is not that person unless a track is loaded in his favour.

Surely, in his recent form, JM is somebody that could, potentially, make a significant contribution toward winning this match?

I'm afraid this seems to be yet another example of Maynard's stubbornness negatively affecting matters, IMO.

With the likes of Bopara, Wheater, Ryan TD, Essex seem to have a very attacking middle-order.

If the track is flat then they could really move the Essex score along later today.

On the other hand, they are all the kind of people who can potentially be "bored out," even if there's not much in the deck so I hope that we can maintain the discipline that we have shown all season.

Beeb commentators claiming that pitch looks 'quite fresh,' so might be something in it for us, up front.

I suspect we shall need a huge morning from Cove.

Not a great start from our bowlers, thus far, by the sounds, and Warks have had a similarly poor start (with the bat, in their case) versus Lancs.

Der Fliegende Hollander (I don't have appropriate accents on my computer) strikes again!!

This may be one selection that Mr Maynard has managed to get right.

You talk of failure to find an overseas player. How many times -not particularly for Somerset- has a late replacement overseas player been underwhelming and no better than what was in the locker already.Good start at 21 for 2

That may be, GM, but, be that as it may, the fact remains that failure is a correct description given that (as per the club itself) we tried really hard and did not succeed.

True, but the use of the word implies culpability. If it is entirely up to one party then it is failure (exams- I wasn't clever enough, didn't work hard enough). If 2 parties are e involved then it is I didn't manage to ( win the lottery, persuade Ermintrude to marry me).

Superb first hour. 37/3. Fantastic stuff from our opening seamers.
Lets get another couple by lunch to ram it home.....

I've never told you this before, GM, but I persuaded Ermintrude to marry ME (though she still speaks well of you).

I always prefer it when the radio commentary is a joint endeavour by the two counties involved and I am enjoying the contributions of Gibson and the Essex men equally this morning.

Well, it's a very good start, score wise. And we seem to be bowling with our customary discipline.

Batting sounds tough.

Essex may have prepared a pitch to suit the seamers, reasoning that Amir may well prove hugely difficult on such a surface. This does not seem an unreasonable supposition against any opponent, let alone one with a brittle batting line-up.

One wonders how much more difficult batting might have been had there been overhead cloud cover. That may be relevant for later in this match, assuming the track stays the same.

Anyway, we are miles ahead on GM's usual ledger about toss/score. And further ahead now after TG rips out Wheater.

Let's get this lot out for less than 175 and hope that, for once, our batsmen actually manage to do the job in conditions that don't heavily favour them.

The only real Ermintrude was in the Magic Roundabout - and she was a cow. I can confirm, LoL, that your Ermintrude is totally lacking in bovine characteristics.

39/4 Come on, MM sort it out.

It's not the bowlers that MM has needed to 'sort out,' all season long.

Wanna hear an Essex joke?

One is Chopra, one is Lawrence, one is Bopara and one is Wheater

Nah, I'm not gonna tell it because I would have to explain it four times
