Rooting for you to beat Middx and stay up next week
WS55 (IP Logged)

Gulp. So it's come to this -- Champions and Runners-up will be head to head to avoid relegation next week. Just so you know, there'll be at least one Yorkshireman (me) cheering you on to win, and win well, against Middlesex -- even though a draw would guarantee Yorkshire's safety.

You didn't deserve to lose against us in June (see my post on last page of 'The Yorkshire Test'). If that helmet had been two inches to the left on June 11th, we'd now be on 137 points and you'd be on 135. One of us would probably have been relegated, and either way I wouldn't be coming to Taunton again next year.

But if you can win next week, and we get the few points we'd then need to stay ahead of a beaten Middlesex, I'll be able to enjoy your hospitality again in 2018. I'd much rather come to Taunton than go to Lord's!

So good luck guys. (Your team is better than a lot of you grumbling Grockles seem to think!)

Thank you WS55 and yes, some of us think our team is OK. And even if it wasn't, we'd still be cheering the lads on!

I certainly hope WS55 will have reason to visit Taunton next summer. I actually think the "grumbling Grockles" do not constitute a "lot" of us, though they do tend to take up a lot of space on the site.

What's the injury news on Tregs? Could LG play as a batman or has he gone under the knife? Why am listening to S-Club-7?

Last picture I saw of Lewis last week he was wearing a hospital gown so I think Monday will be a wee bit soon for him!

Tregs struggling per Matt but will do anything to play if at all possible.
It will turn so rvdm has to be the replacement, 1st innings runs the priority, win thoughts become live after we match their batting points.....

The most depressing part of the cricket season is when the steward puts the final stamp on the card that all members get for a free scorecard.

We all know it is the final game of the season. (Sm117)

Division two don't depress me, we have been there before and we didn't stay long, anyway we are not there yet.

Come on Somerset you can do us proud.

Lewis has had pins put in his back. They didn't put anything in me but 6 weeks later I'm still working on the wound healing so it is highly unlikely that Mr Gregory.will be playing cricket in the near future.

Needless to say there should be no question of gambling on Pete's fitness for such an important match - there's no way we should pick him, IMO, having seen the level of discomfort that he was in on Friday, unless it was just a cramp or muscle spasm.

Good luck to all the sides in the final round and within the spirit of the game. Tom, long may you continue as Captain whether we will be feeder division or not. It's the players that matter, not the celebrity of DoC which is a football copy. Middlesex shouldn't have been deducted the 2 points, so we must win well. Hope these crucial games for so late in September don't lead to any more injuries and everyone else can get the time off college or work.

Somerset will pick a starting XI from the following 13 man squad:
Tom Abell (c), Marcus Trescothick, Eddie Byrom, George Bartlett, James Hildreth, Steve Davies (wk), Roelof van der Merwe, Craig Overton, Dom Bess, Jack Leach, Tim Groenewald, Paul van Meekeren, Peter Trego.

Peter Trego is a doubt for the match after picking up an achilles injury on Friday at the Kia Oval.

Pretty clear Tregs is out.
I agree RVDM straight swop at 7.

Per Midx site we have a new signing Joe Leach playing!

The absolutely huge news is no Rayner.
Proper spin options now Sowter & Patel who have 1 championship wicket between them in 2017 (jack & dom 76!)
Part time options of Malan Voges Stirling.

If we can just win that toss & post 250 i cant see how things can go wrong.....

Batting first not necessarily the right call given that it sometimes turns most on day one. Even if that doesn't happen and the track instead turns progressively more as the match wears on then one wonders how much there may be to fear from spinners with so few overs under their belts.

I'd make my toss decision based on the weather. We don't know whether the track will take increasing turn or decreasing turn but, should it be gloomy overhead then that would increase the odds of help for Cove and TG - help which might be less forthcoming later, should the weather improve.

Don't say things like that wsm!!!! This is Somerset!!! I want as many things as possible to go wrong before the start of play. We don't do sure things at all well. And this certainly isn't one by any definition anyway.

C'mon Clarence, Tom, Botham and every other misery guts we've ever hosted.

Please come on and tell us we have no chance whatsoever and are bound to fail miserably because we are rubbish.

I shall be at the game tomorrow offering my full support to the guys as they try to complete the job of digging their way out of the large hole they dug earlier in the season.

Going to be exciting/tense/frustrating ... (delete as appropriate).

AGod, you suddenly have supreme faith in our much lorded batting order to bat last chasing simething with our 10 year division 1 status on the line, im shocked.....

I do get your logic but its bat 1st for me.
We are used to that method, we beat Warwicks & Lancs that way and overiding is the pressure on either line up having to bat last to determine their fate.

Jack&Dom to work their magic, only 15 hours to go.....

Sowter and Patel have more championship wickets between them in 2018 than Leach and Bess then, wsm. What a prophet you are.

"C'mon Clarence, Tom, Botham and every other misery guts we've ever hosted.

I can only speak for myself, but I shall be there tomorrow Grockle. You won't!

It will be the last bit of cricket of any description for me this year. If we exceed ourselves, or if we fail narrowly or even fail miserably, I won't give the proverbial monkey's. All I want to see is a side fighting and straining every sinew to give 110% for all their members and supporters - the people who have given their hard - earned money in order to keep the club afloat. That is the least anyone should expect.

Whether we stay up or whether we go down is frankly immaterial. We can't undo what has been done throughout the season. What will be, will be.

When this week's cricket is over, I shall wait with bated breath to see what measures will be taken, by whomsoever, to set us off on a better footing in 2018.

Then we start all over again, and God willing (my God that is) I shall be there.

Clarence i do hope your natural positivity gets across to the players.

I really look forward to your balanced positive posting in support of tomorrows action.

In truth i am looking forward to the next 3 or 4 days supporting my team in the company of my like minded positive friends who will be there this week supporting and then again next season supporting in whatever division we are competing in.

Huge day 1, lets start well & get on top from session 1....

How did it come to it that a squad that at one time seemed to comprise half a dozen seam-bowling all-rounders looks like going into the most important game in the club's history with Tom Abell as third seamer? Jamie Overton, Lewis Gregory, Pete Trego ... all on the treatment table; and Allenby making himself unselectable in all sorts of ways.

On that basis I can see a case for selecting van Meekeren, assuming Trego doesn't make it. However the pitch turns out, I'd hate to be within one more twisted ankle of Tom Abell having to share the new ball.

Having said that, I'd still go for van der Merwe, because there were definitely periods during that arduous slog to crowbar Lancashire out twice in a row, when we could have done with an extra spinner to freshen things up. It's a bit annoying that none of the current batsmen (bar the absent Myburgh) can offer that option.
