Very well done, Cove (if true). I agree with all of wsm fan's comments.

I had planned to switch back to BT + Sport. Adelaide is day-night? And Perth runs well into the morning. MCG over Christmas. Brisbane and Sydney more of a challenge to follow

No Ali in leaked list - probably all a joke!

Very happy for Craig, hugely deserved.

Crane over Leach is ridiculous.

Don't really get Jake Ball either, he's hardly been allowed to play this year; I'd prefer Plunkett's pace, batting and attitude.

I guess Root and Ballance are the reserve openers - very shaky, tho not certain what options the selectors had.

Don't mind Foakes, though if he didn't play at the Oval, would he have been on the radar? Certainly a better bet than Jos, I'm afraid.

Vince? 😬

Seems to me we have about 6-8 really good, top level Test players, but are making up the rest with guys who may well not be up to it. Which is interesting as most Test sides have 3-5 top players, but the rest are pretty good. Gonna be an intriguing winter! My First Test team:

Cook
Stoneman
Ballance
Root
Malan
Stokes
Bairstow
Moeen
Overton (but probably Woakes 😉)
Broad
Anderson

SP - I was thinking the same re: Pudsey. His extra pace surely preferable to Ball. For that matter, if we're going to have another English style seamer, in addition to Jimmy, why wouldn't we try Porter rather than Ball? As you say, Ball has barely played!

Personally I'd have taken one more bowler than normal and taken both Plunkett and Wood and no Ball. Obviously Leachy, or even Rayner but definitely not Crane, who will be destroyed at 4.5 per over if he even gets on the park. For the record, I'm not claiming Leachy would rip through the Aussies - I don't think he would, but he's canny enough and accurate enough to keep them honest, pick up the odd wicket here and there.

I'd have taken Robson rather than Vince. Could move up to open, brought up batting on bouncy Australian tracks and (current match notwithstanding) a better batsman than when he last played for England. Wrong management company though.

As for Jack, I'm probably not as disappointed as last year. Partly because unless Mo goes in the fetlock or gets himself into a late night pub brawl (!) a second spinner is unlikely to play (no, not even at Sydney). Maybe England are right, and Crane is the real deal. If he is, and he has a dozen or more England years ahead of him, then that can only be a good thing. However, the Wikipedia list of England capped players is littered in recent times with spinners picked too young or chucked into a one off Test who fell by the wayside like Schofield, Kerrigan, Borthwick, Brown, Briggs, Dawson (maybe). The spinners who lasted the longest in England colours this century debuted at a relatively old age - Swann, Giles and, probably, Moeen.

If Jack keeps taking the wickets his time will come

As the Lions squad will be out in Australia during the early part of the Ashes tour I would expect Wood, Plunkett, Porter, maybe Jove, Leach to be there ready to bring into the main squad.

I think the ECB should offer an explanation for the selection of Crane. Put him in the Lions squad by all means if they think he has high potential (though I've yet to detect it) but in the Ashes squad? Ludicrous.

Nasser Hussain is saying how unlucky Adil Rashid is to miss out to Mason Crane.. really Nas? Adil is the spinner you take if you need an extra batsman. If you take a spinner take one who actually is one!!

Then again listening to more. Hussain seems to think the only function of the spinner in Oz is to hold an end up and not go for much. Isn't that pretty much the English view of spin bowling in general?

Delighted for Craig. If he does get a chance, I'm sure he will be able take it. The problem is that if he is picked for the tests next summer and Jack Leach continues to impress, and is also picked, who the hell is going get enough wickets for Somerset?

Listening to Nass I'm amazed the Aussies ever picked Warne for a home Test

But Rashid is both a better bowler and a better batsman than Crane anyway.

Moheen is unwell before a game, who do you pick to bowl against Steve Smith - someone who has played all season with 44 wickets or someone who hasn't on 16 ?

YOu pick Jack Leach.

Crane will be cannon fodder.

Well you don't. You pick Crane and back him up with Joe Root because Jack won't be there and that is all you have.

It does seem daft after last winter when Jack's single season of experience was cited as one reason why he wasn't ready yet.

The ECB make Somerset look consistent.

Crane can't even get in the Hampshire side most of the time! I could accept them taking Rashid or even Dawson at a push as that would be a more like-for-like with Moeen, but to pick another specialist spinner ahead of Jack is... questionable.

hahahaahahahahahaha

It's pretty clear that Leachy will need a hatful of wickets on his travels next year, in order to get a sniff.

The same laziness that said 'Taunton is flat, so runs are worthless there," has now translated to "it turns, so if a spinner takes wickets there, just ignore them."

Here's a question for the utter thick-heads that occupy positions at the ECB..... if England have to play on a turning pitch, which would you rather have - a bowler who is used to the pressure of being expected to take lots of wickets on such a track, or one who lacks experience on such surfaces, and is liable to get overexcited and try to bowl Warne to Gatting balls every other delivery?
