Ryan Davies opening in that one game was due to a last minute injury, not some weird Maynardian conspiracy that he should be blamed for.

I read that Hurry won't be taking up his post until January so I hope that doesn't mean we miss any boats regarding available players from elsewhere. (And I hope the photograph of him on the SCCC website will be the last we see of him in shorts and sports shirt. We will not need another coach).

No, SLC, a 'last minute injury,' does not justify Ryan Davies opening UNLESS he was the most qualified player to do so. He was not.

My point was that it wasn't some crazy plan and then used as some kind of "I told you so" evidence against Ryan as Railboy said.

Steve Davies pulled up injured in the warm ups, and rather than rejig the whole team, he not unreasonably felt that it was better to play one person out of position, that move everyone.

I guess 'not unreasonably,' is open to interpretation.

S Davies was injured. I assume his opening partner was Jim Allenby. Peter Trego was in the team and has opened on various occasions before in white ball cricket - he could have opened. Wasn't Dean Elgar still in the team at that juncture? He, most certainly, would have had a better shot against the likes of Fidel Edwards, first up, than Ryan Davies would.

But, to be honest, any specialist batsman would have been a better call vs Edwards with the new ball than opening up with Ryan D.

Edited to add that I've found the scorecard:

Adam Hose played in this match - he had opened in this competition the previous season - how can he not have been a more sensible choice than Ryan D?

Well lets all have a massive post chain to analyse it shall we?

Probably not a great decision but one done in haste and as such should nit have been held against the young man or decided the view of his batting for the rest of his time with us.

It's a bit like MM's decision to play him at the start if his Somerset career. Not exactly something Ryan had any great say in I wouldn't think. But something brought up here regularly whenever asessing the ability of the young keeper.

Well, I expect the plan was to have Steve Davies go really hard at the start (as it was, it was hard to tell as he was in such poor form), so swapping for Elgar would've changed the way the team played.

Hose was a proven failure as an opener, and doing well at 5/6, so you wouldn't want to move him for that reason.

Trego would've been the other option to open, but then that would mean moving everyone else up one spot, so changing most of the team. Or just give Ryan Davies the chance to be aggressive at the start, in the knowledge you have a reasonably long order behind him.

Obviously it didn't work, but

a) it was a last minute plan, presumably done to minimise distruption
b) I really don't think it was held against Ryan afterwards, if anything he'd have got credit for being flexible for the benefit of the team, instead of insisting on coming in against an old ball

Well both Maynard and Ryan Davies have left the club, and quite frankly are best forgotten.

A glass half - empty or a glass half - full?
Regardless, both glasses need filling up.

Grockle - yes, ageee completely - clearly not RD's own decision.

SLC - on what basis was Adam Hose 'a proven failure as an opener,'?

We'll see whether you follow your own advice about one of those 2 over the coming months Tom.

Well his poor batting while opening for us in previous years would be my main guide to that.

He's hoping to open for Warks in one day games next year I assume.

Well I managed to live through another season - strange one really - never likely to win anything and relegation looked very likely and the fact we stayed up was largely due to good fortune in my view but that is OK because if you go down that is often due to mis fortune !
Still think some poor decisions were made upstairs and very glad to see the back of MM as I have always thought it was a bad choice. God willing I will still be here next year and still able to post and still living in hope !!
Odd though is it not - how often the previous years champions get relegated the next season - anyone out there care to rationalise why this is - beyond me I admit !

But Hose wasn't 'poor,' SLC - as I recall he did reasonably well last season when opening (or rather the season before last as 2016 now is).

Rodders

It has happened four times in the 18 years of two divisions. Yorkshire won in 2001 relegated 2002 (along with Somerset who came second in 2001). Nottinghamshire won in 2005 relegated 2006. Lancashire won in 2011 relegated 2012. Middlesex won 2016 relegated 2017 (subject to any change in deducted points). Of those Nottinghamshire and Lancashire came back up the season after they were relegated.

As to reasons. No reasons only guesses. It is a very volatile division. Somerset are now the only team to have been continuously in it since 2012. The top three teams in 2012 were Warwickshire, Somerset and Middlesex so even those that have stuck around with us have gone. Probably by the law of averages a division that volatile is from time to time going to cull the Champions. It happens on average every four and a half years. That was exactly the average time a team in a two down nine team division could expect to last.

In terms of volatility the top team last year was relegated this year whilst second and third last year, Somerset and Yorkshire came within two and three points respectively of being relegated this year.

May you see us win the thing next year.
