Do the names Stephen Chalke and Fairfield Publishing mean anything to anyone here? I'm sure they ought to to me, but I've only just discovered them. They sound a lovely little outfit.

Since you ask, I was wondering about new book projects they might be interested in. (Also whether they employed freelance indexers/proofreaders, but I get the impression they don't operate on that kind of scale).

Summer's Crown, Stephen Chalke's history of the County Championship, is wonderful reading.

And probably soon to be a history book in the real sense.

Stephen Chalke also runs the West of England Cricket Society. The next meeting is 2pm 7th November in Bath and it's a talk by Andy Nash

Stephen Chalke is very approachable and helpful.

I have read several of Stephen Chalke’s books, all of which are excellent - as are books by other authors which he has published. Unfortunately, most are out of print and are available only at steep prices from the likes of Amazon.

For a record of post-war championship cricket, Summer's Crown cannot be bettered - and as Grockle presciently points out it may one day prove to be an significant historical document.

It's worth looking at his website, Fairfield Books, where some titles can still be purchased.

A glass half - empty or a glass half - full?
Regardless, both glasses need filling up.

I understand this posting is not about the named subject, but felt it had a connection.

The Gazette has published a mid 1950's photo of Harold and Maurice along with a young autograph hunter whom Authors Stephen Hill and Barry Phillip are trying to trace in preparation for a new book they are writing.

Any clues anyone.

I am definitely of the right vintage and that boy might have been me, save that it isn't. I recognise him, but that's because I think I've seen the photo before. It could be that I remember his face as a fellow boy watcher in the Fifties - possible at Clarence Park.

Re-reading that sentence, I confess to having produced a totally unhelpful response. Twas ever thus...

Would you care to clarify that phrase at all LoL?

Seriously though, what a lovely bit of photography. Hard to imagine anything of that quality appearing in the Gazette these days, and if it did they'd probably get the caption wrong.
