2018 SCCC PLAYERS OLD AND NEW

For anyone with a quarter of an hour to spare to get the new year going with a blast from the not too distant past this is worth a listen.

A reminiscing Andy Caddick looks back over his Test career. He gets his decades mixed up towards the end but a pretty balanced assessment of his own career.

Champo team for April 20.....

Tres Eddie Cam Hildy Tom SD Lewis Craig Jamie Jack Tim

So spares.....
Batters Tregs Rouse George
Keeper Banton
Bowlers Davey Van Meek Dom Rvdm (Max)

Cooper says no more raging turners so seam bowling a little light with Craig likely to miss half at least? Lewis & Jamie coming back from injuries, plus Jack & Dom both in thick of lions stuff.

Yep seam is light even with Josh as backup.

Jamie injured and we are very light if Cove becomes unavailable. Either we are expecting some of our young guys to step up ( a little early I would suggest) or we could do with looking at backup options pre season.

We'll see what the plans may be at the AGM I expect.

At AGM we'll be given rosiest scenario.
Craig Jamie Lewis Timmy G Davey Van Meek Jack Dom RVDM.
On paper sounds ok.
Reality is.....
Craig VERY likely to play 7 or 8 max.
He may easily not even be ours by May if England give him a contract.
Jamie IS fully fit.
Irrelevant in early Jan i agree but no reason he wont be flying in Apr20.
However with England clear need for 90mph if he stays fit & firing Apr May Jun lions & more will come calling.
I predict less "Overton" champo appearances in 2018 than 2017.
Add to the fact we are told no more turners we need more seam bowling not less.
ECB have only given us 3 homes after June12 anyway so stops us really in our late season turner policy too

I don't think I would omit Dom from the Championship team at any stage of the season unless he is injured or suffers a serious loss of form.
This boy is one of the most spectacular new prospects the county game has seen in decades and he and Jack complement each other perfectly.
I have no problem with playing more than one spinner in a county side, even prior to August. I seem to recall East/Acfield, Emburey/Edmonds, Cope/Carrick and (going back a bit further) Wilson/Illingworth having their good days, to name but a few.

I agree with all of that, Mikeindex, and would add another great spinning pair, Hazell and Lawrence.

I would agree if only county cricket was still played on uncovered pitches.

Watching the excellent 6 minute highlight video of the 2005 T20 semi against Leics just up on the official Twitter feed, I was surprised to see that Jim Allenby was playing for the Foxes as well as Charl Willoughby. A much trimmer James I have to say.

Assuming LG's injury issues have been resolved a good appointment, IMHO.

Maybe they were gathering various medical opinions as to the likelihood of his procedure fixing his issues? Not much point appointing a captain if you're not confident he can get on the park.

They seemed pretty confident before Christmas that this had done the job. But I take your point.

For those of you with Sky if you're not staying up to watch it live the highlights of England's U19 world cup quarter final v Australia are worth a look.

Firstly for the batting of Tom Banton who has saved his best so far for the match against the old enemy. But also for the young Australian leggie Lloyd Pope. I predict he will be causing England batsmen grief in years to come.

Well he certainly caused them grief last night. Disappointing.

Bit annoyed at the BBC and my cricinfo app - at no time did they say that this was a quarter final (ie knockout) match. Having followed thrashings of the likes of Canada, I was thinking that this was our first 'proper' game. Turned the phone off after Aus's innings, confident that we'd see how good our youngsters are...then I wake up this morning and suddenly we're out of tournament! #deflated

Not only was Lloyd Pope obviously Aussies Under-19 match-winner with 8-35 in just under his 10 overs, but he is a. blond, indeed almost red-headed; b. something of a maverick; and c. a leggie - sounds familiar.

Tom Banton, by the way, accounted for well over half of England`s dismal 96, including three fours off successive balls when they appeared to be coasting to a win. Out to the dreaded reverse sweep - shades of Mike Gatting.

Is it anything to do with Tom playing against class spinners on a regular basis perhaps?
