I'm sure most of us will be off this week to the Maddox Gallery in Mayfair to see Nick Compton's first solo photographic exhibition.

Hello all,

Thought I'd make one of my sporadic appearances to tell you about an unexpected encounter today.

I spent the morning taking ss jr 1 round the 6th form college (yes, really - those of you who remember him being born are allowed to feel old ...) that he wants to go to next year. After the academic stuff we naturally went to see what the cricket opportunities were like.

Into the sports hall reception. 'Oh, yes, the guy in charge of cricket is just behind you.' So I turned round and came face to face with none other than Keith Parsons! So ss jr 1 will be in good hands. Oh, and KP hardly looks a day older than when I last saw him play ...

That's lovely, ss. It brought a smile unbidden to my lips. It also made me feel old, as predicted!

Did you go on to give Keith a run down on his own playing career?

Can't imagine what would make you think I might do that, Grockle *innocent face*

Though I did have to give ss jr 1 a short lecture on who he was talking to, as he didn't realise. Tsk, the youth of today, etc.

Glad to have made everyone feel old. Must do it again sometime ...

Interesting article about Dom Bess on Cricinfo
[www.espncricinfo.com]

A worrying amount of column inches discussing whether a move from Somerset is required to fullfil ambition.

Management will need to continue to earn their corn.

Almost impossible to keep both of them content, albeit I guess Dom should get more chances if Jack can hold on to his Test place.

The judgement of Solomon is called for once again.

Dom Bess has signed a new two-year contract with Somerset until the end of 2020.

Excellent news.
I see no reason why we shouldn't pick Jack and Dom - provided Dom gets his mojo (isn't that what they say nowadays?) back - alongside three of Overton, Overton, Gregory, Brooks and Davey all season. We hardly need a fourth specialist seamer if Tom A is going to keep up this year's bowling form.
Of course if the England selectors finally find the sense to pick Jack for home Tests as well as subcontinental ones, there can be no question of Dom's place in the side at least for the duration - do we still have Roley next year?

Dom signed that new 2 year deal in January 2018, so not new news! So yes covered until Sept 2020.

If I remember correctly at last years AGM the CEO stated one of the reason for last season increase in subscription was to enable the club to offer a player like Dom Bess a decent salary to keep him at the club.

Dom also needs to do his part. He needs to take the reins when given the opportunity and work on the second string of batting to make it easier to include him in a 2 spin attack.

Don't forget Timmy G, Mike !

Selecting the bowling attack next season is going to be quite the challenge.

As regards Dom's contract, it's great that he is signed for the long'ish time, but I just hope we can keep him happy & meaningfully occupied.

Still, it's a lot better than having to scratch around trying to find a decent attack !

Well spotted Grizzly, Timmy G was a purely accidental oversight (I recently did the same thing in a theatre programme and was mortified when I, too late, noticed).
When all our pace attack are fit and available, some kind of rotation strategy might well be in order.

Thanks for the news about Bess. I agree that he was not up with the pace all the time, but I still rate him very highly and IMO assuming Jack isn't playing for England, my first three names on the Somerset red ball team sheet would be Abell, Leach and Bess. Fight over the other 8 places but I still believe the best balanced team is 3 Seamers or quickies, 2 decent spinners, a keeper, an all-rounder, and four specialist batters. Ideally 3 or 4 of the bowlers and keeper can hold a bat!
Reading between the lines, if Bess can't establish his place by September 2020, he will be looking for a fresh challenge.

If he can't maintain a first team place on performance then Dom moving on would be best for both sides of the equation It can't be a case that Somerset need to find him a place It must be the case that he is one of the eleven that demand selection because they are the best we have for the game we have. That means, I am afraid, that one of 2 spinners has to bat.

Well they possibly could do worse to be honest. If he gets double figures he may well do better than some who have had the opening spot recently.

Craig Overton has returned home from the Lions tour of the UAE, suffering from a disc injury in his lower back.

The Lions party, which plays Pakistan A in the opening match on Sunday, also includes his brother Jamie, Lewis Gregory and Dom Bess.

Indeed, skittler. A fine effort from Dom.

I can't even say that now you're playing bowls you have bowled him out as he was stumped!

Dom currently bowling well for the Lions - 2/14 off 8 overs. I wonder if he is being groomed as an eventual "like for like" replacement for Moeen? Dom is 10 years younger.

Have not seen it on here, but I believe England Lions have broken another of our Overtons. Not sure why we keep letting them use them!
