Tom Abell, Josh Davey and Tim Groenewald all face fitness tests tomorrow morning ahead of the return to championship cricket against Nottinghamshire.

Roelof van der Merwe and Paul van Meekeren are included in the 14. As reported elsewhere on Grockles, they have been picked by the Netherlands for a one-day match with Ireland next Tuesday, but on the proviso they are not wanted by Somerset.

No place for Peter Trego, which is surprising as Abell is still a doubt and he would seem to have been an obvious replacement.

Squad: Abell (c), Bartlett, Bess, Byrom, Davey, Davies, Gregory, Groenewald, Hildreth, C. Overton, J. Overton, Renshaw, ven der Merwe, van Meekeren.

Notts will be without strike bowlers Jake Ball, Stuart Broad and Harry Gurney tomorrow. They may include 22-year-old off-spinner Matt Carter, who took 10 wickets in the match on his Notts debut at Taunton in 2015, but had hardly played first team cricket since.

Squad: Libby,Nash, Mullaney (c), Footitt, Wessels, Wood, Milnes, Fletcher, Carter, Patel, Moores, Taylor, Root.

Bit surprised at Trego's absence, as it would look like an obvious like-for-like replacement: a lower middle-order batsman - who's in great white-ball form - and fourth (or higher, in Abell's present form) seamer. I also think that Jos Buttler eloquently demonstrated that you can bring white-ball skills to longer-form cricket, and the gap between T20 and Test Cricket is the most extreme, more so than between 50-over and the four-day game.

Either way, this is a very, very important game for Somerset's (and Nottinghamshire's) hopes this year.

So, it's fingers crossed. I've been following Somerset since the early 70s, my dad (still with us aged nearly 84) has followed them since the late 40s or early 50s, and he talks fondly about the likes of Johnny Lawrence and Micky Walford - 3,395 runs at an average of 40.90 from 1949-1953, which looks 'handy' for an amateur! I blame my dad!

Yes, intrigued to know the thinking behind PT’s omission.

Seems he has been written off in the longer form of the game, which is odd to put it mildly.

Fingers crossed the weather plays ball and we can have a full game, with plenty of SCCC runs.

I think Tregs might be signed with WsM on Saturdays.

Grey heavy and cloudy at Taunton. Somerset decided to bat. Tom and Craig got through their fitness tests but Jamie didn't and Josh is in for him.

So Eddie, Matt, George, James, Tom, Steve, Lewis, Roelof, Dom, Craig, Josh

Unusually turgid spell of play to start the first day. Accurate bowling by Notts. who are not giving anything away (hope we learn from that !).

After 80 minutes of play and 19 overs, Eddie Byrom has amassed a total of 6 runs, putting him firmly in the stakes for the 2018 Chris Tavare appreciation society batting award !

They reckon not after mass analysis of the replay. He was afterwards but probably not during.

14 in 90 minutes and George has half that after 12 balls. Really confident first scoring shot

80 for 1 at lunch with Matt Renshaw on 52 (50 off 77 with 8 fours and 1 six). The sun is breaking through so may speed up a bit after lunch.

No mention of it if he did. Or Josh for that matter. The three discussed were Tom, Craig and Jamie. 2 passes and a fail.

Lewis had a shuttles workout at lunch today - about 80 yard return runs with a breather then you do it again.

Jamie and Paul M were getting batting practice in the nets at lunch as well.

Yes he looked confident. Good low catch and a bit of turn to go with it. Carter is the only worry at the moment.

Revision.

Sorry Jamie.

The test this morning were Tom, Craig and Josh. It seems Tim was pretty doubtful and wasn't much better this morning so the test sort of unofficially did itself.

Jamie DIDN'T have a test this morning - that was my misunderstanding when I first got here.

Good to know people on here are sharp and keep us honest.

It is the end of play for the day, so we can record that wicket-keeper Davies was out for 2 - Ryan of that ilk, making his championship debut for Durham who were bowled out for less than 100.

They never seemed to put a totally decisive partnership together, and to my mind there's no way to know how good this score is until Notts bat. It certainly doesn't appear to be a disaster, but I'd love to see them get closer to 350 or even 400 in the morning. As you say, it's finger-crossing time tomorrow.

It was turning by lunch today!
They are batting last.
Our 2 spinners FAR better than theirs.
23 points by Monday teatime.
Thank you very much.

A hard to watch at times attritional day's play today.

A rush of blood by Matt Renshaw, but by then he had done his bit. Notts bowlers stuck to their task and with their fields very well set, and their bowlers bowling according to them, it was difficult particularly in the morning session to penetrate them.

It was a pity that we couldn't accelerate in order to achieve a bigger total by the end of play, but let us see what tomorrow brings.

Didn't notice much turn in the pitch myself but I was not sitting directly in line.

A glass half - empty or a glass half - full?
Regardless, both glasses need filling up.

Enjoyable yet testing day. Matt Renshaw played superbly and we will certainly miss him when he departs all too soon.

Nice to see Tom batting so well and also SD who looks classy when he sticks around. Let’s hope he continues to do so tomorrow.

Thought the Notts bowling was excellent. Very few bad deliveries and they kept the pressure on throughout. That is something we simply must do tomorrow !

Too early to tell how competitive our score is likely to be, but would be good if we could muster another fifty or so before getting them in.

Decent weather and good to chat to a few Grocklees as well !

Grizzzly

P.S. Utterly ridiculous that (apart from the T20 stuff) after this game ends, there is no First XI cricket at the ground until 19th August, which is over two months away. Well done Mr Graves and the ECB. Absolutely bonkers.

Well done for not mentioning Steve and getting him past 50. Bit of a headfart by Lewis opened up the tail when it wasn't necessary but maybe Steve and Dom can clean that up in the morning

Fletcher worked damn hard today and Carter looked good. It was hard in the morning but we didn't collapse and stuck to the task. Unusual as JH only made 1.

Let's hope this is a solid base and we can firstly consolidate and then put Notts to the sword.

The ball did turn for both Patel and Carter. Not massively but it did move.

Really solid performance from Somerset, a Renshaw ton and Tom Abell / Steven Davies 50's with a cameo appearance from Dom. I thought Notts bowled well containing the short boundary. A good position to be in tonight
