There seems to be a lot of discussion about this game so let's start this thread early and find a place for it all.

Would like to see Peter Trego in the XI v Essex and am pretty ambivalent re Lewis (as he appears to be towards his future at SCCC).

Just hope that whatever team we put out plays with the grit, spirit and determination that we saw at the start of the season and more to their undoubted capabilities than at Guildford, (which really did leave a sour taste in the mouth).

Not sure I would pick two spinners though. Is the strip at Chelmsford, under lights, really likely to turn ?

Big blow with the loss of Matt Renshaw with a broken finger.

Have the club got anyone lined up? or will we go with what we have got.

There was talk and we did have enough forewarning to get something moving. He is going two games early though so we are in that limbo again.

No info from anywhere that I know of.

My X1

Byrom
Banton
Bartlett
Hildreth
Abell
Trego
Van de Merve
Bess
Davey
Gronewald
Van Meekeren

An inexperienced front three but do we have any better?

I'd imagine Jack would need more game time to get match fit.

I heard there was a problem with the possible Pakistan opener quoted in the media, which is under investigation.

No Davies or either Overton Rob - one or both may be available depending on Jamie's readiness and Craig's availability in relation to the Lions.

I think you'll find Steve in the top three.

Also don't think PaulvM is fit

Most seem to think we've given Lewis enough time then.

Jack had concussion from getting hit on the helmet batting v Morkel, so has to serve a seven-day mandatory rest - ergo, def won't play at Chelmsford, RRob.

Forgot about Davies. Put him in to open instead of Banton.

Craig's on England duty.

Didn't realise PvM was injured. He played club cricket today so maybe fit enough.

Wouldn't chance Jamie especially with the pink ball!

We have just let a team score 450 putting them in with 4 medium pacers.
I just dont get the "chance" or "risk it" mentality with Jamie.
He has 100+ red ball wickets, he isnt a raw kid.

I dont care if he goes at 4s or even 5s.
Our 2 opening bowlers v Surrey day 1 were 41 overs 1-140 odd.
Give me Jamie 16-2-80-3 over that any day.

We need wickets on flat sunny june july aug wickets.
Not four 75-78mph medium dobbers.
Nothing against Timmy G Josh or Lewis (if he signs) but in a 6 man attack with 4 "quicks" we can afford an x factor bowler.

He is fully fit, FACT.

Any limitation on his overs this month or perceived "undercooked" is of the clubs doing.
We even played Middlesex 2s in a 3 dayer yet bowled joke bowlers on day 3 rather than Jamie Trego Max for no obvious reason.

I'm off to sunny Essex tomorrow so I'm hoping we have a good performance down there next week. Weather forecast looks good which is a promising start.

Personally I would give Jamie a go, he could be just the person we need with a pink ball under lights.

During the lunch interval at Guildford on Friday, he was bowling pretty quick with a PINK ball. I'm sure the plan is to play him, all other factors allowing.

Don't think there is an option of not playing Jamie, especially if Craig is staying with the Lions.

There are plenty of options (Sm16) I hope he plays. Such great potential, now take your chance.

Well unless your are looking at reintroducing Green Scrumper I'm struggling to see those options and as you say (along with WSM's statement that he is 'fully fit') this is the opportunity for him to stamp his authority on our bowling unit and become the offensive weapon we all hope he has developed into.

Hope he plays, hope he fires because we could do witj what he brings at his best.

I think the press embargo is over then as it has been reported.

Craig has a slight side strain. He will not play today and has been reolaced in the Lions squad.

Won't of course be fit for Essex either though unfortunately

Angel Face posted this a little earlier on one of the general threads;

"I refuse to join in this criticism of Gregory. The young man is considering his future and we should just let him and the club get on with it. I have seen no evidence of "a lack of commitment". He bowled pretty well on the first day of the Surrey match and, while his batting has been poor generally, he did OK in a losing cause on day three. I shall be disappointed if he goes but talk of leaving him out of the team as a sort of punishment for not signing a new contract is plain wrong."

With the injuries continuing to escalate, isn`t it time Andy Hurry and Co. considered going down the `loan` route.

Just a quick look at gifted players currently unable to command a first team county championship place unearths some interesting names.

My first choice would be Essex`s opening bat Nic Browne, their leading scorer last season but unlikely to be made available to us as soon as tomorrow - if at all.

Three other opening bats with obvious Somerset links are Northants Rob Newton and Derby`s Luis Reece, both born in Taunton, and Glo`shire` Will Tavaré, while Nick Compton has also been saying recently he would be attracted to a loan deal - despite this being his testimonial year at Lord`s.

Batting all-rounders we might consider include Leics` Ned Eckersley, who has been on our radar before: Lancashire`s Steven Croft, their captain last year; Kent`s Will Gidman; and Middx`s James Franklin, the most experienced of all those possibly available.

On the batting only front there are Glamorgan`s Aneurin Donald, world record holder for the fastest first class 200, and Ireland captain Will Porterfield, currently without a county.

Not all that thin a field after all.

If we look at what we presently have you might be able to see the logic

Eddie, George, Tom B, James, Steve Davies as the only specialist batsmen

(Will Rouse - has some experience? Fin Trenouth? Tom Lammonby - presently captain of U19)

Tom A - has to be put there, Lewis, Pete, Dom as the allrounders

(Possibly RvdM?)

Tim, Jamie, Josh

(Green?)

Injuries - Banger, Jack, Craig, PaulvM

The potential abiliuty is there but the level of experience is pretty low and a loan player might add a bit. It's also the reason why I thnk we need to put Pete in there and consider Lewis irrespective of what is going on as long as he can focus!!

Van meekeren played for Holland in t20s v Scotland last week, so don’t think he’s injured unless it’s happened in training or something .

Interesting names in there Jerry certainly . Some would do a job. Maybe we should actually look up sign one up permanently ?

So he's injured then and is unavailable for a number of games.

Well Somerset are quoting him as injured - or at least they were saying so yesterday. T20's aren't 4 day games I suppose. 4 overs in a 3 hour game versus high teen overs a day for 2 ish?

That may be for Leicestershire to decide before the legal bits are sorted possibly. I'm unsure what Mike's legal position is when he is in dispute with his employer.

When does the process become a 'restraint of trade' scenario? Messy.

I doubt if you would get a player on loan from another Div. 1 county for what appear to me to be obvious reasons.

Div. 2 possibly.

I believe that this game was originally scheduled to be played at Colchester, but Essex decided to halt their Festival week there. Had it been at Colchester, I would have attended in view of my past very happy connections there.

Never mind, eh!

I think Browne will play against us - I feel I heard something about Chopra being unavailable, tho I may be wrong.

Even if he were on loan to us, I imagine he can't play against his own county?
