BLAST! It's Kent
Grockle (IP Logged)

Again to keep the mobilers from getting scroll rage. Here is the small thread for the Sunday fixture against Kent.

2:30 start and Somerset expects the same kind of performance that washed Glos away on Friday night.

Beautiful clear view of the Quantocks from the ground. It's going to be a nice afternoon.

The teamsheet is the same as Friday. Same side with Dom as 12th man. Craig is reported on another thread as being fit for Bristol next Friday.

Kent have Denley, Bell-Drummond, Kuhn, Billings, Brathwaite, Dickson, Haggett, Milne, Qayyum and Thomas on their list with Podmore as 12th man at 1:30.

Good to see Callum back at the ground. Somerset homegrown guys who go elsewhere and make a name for themselves are few and far between. Sam Billings will be looking to put himself back in an international picture and Carlos Brathwaite is there as the opposition's international on a ground with short boundaries - should be fun.

We don't beat Kent often and I seem to remember they gave us a lesson on how to play T20 last year (and the year before). Much more of a task this afternoon I would suggest.

Brathwaite is an immense man! Somerset are playing footy. "Football's lost its map".

Mitchell Claydon for Ivan Thomas in the Kent lineup. Somerset unchanged from Friday. Kent won the toss and will chase so we are batting first.

Welcome to the topsy turvey nature of this form of the game. Very difficult once you get behind on the run rate to post a challenging target without someone going boundary crazy. Here's hoping our star man performs.

Kent have a very strong top 6.

Clubber Anderson isn't pretty but he is effective. Still short though I'm afraid.

Well he didn't seem to really get going at any point. Looked as though he wanted to take the cover off every delivery when a bit more subtlety might have engineered more runs.

You are right though about the total looking short.

Yes going to have to bowl very tightly to keep Kent inside this one. Just over a run a ball at the moment but I can't see Billings and Brathwaite staying inside that so we also need significant wickets at significant times.

All a bit 'not with a bang but with a whimper' sort of thing. Too many overs left and not enough runs.

Kuhn and Bell Drummond don't need the big hitters.

Pull the fork out people because we are done.

Lost in the 17th with a six to give it to Kent by 8 wickets

Great performance by Kent, made us look the second rate team we are in this format. They never looked in any danger at any point.

As its about the furthest away trip for both sides, maybe in the future Somerset and Kent stay at home. If the weather at the prescribed time is wet, one point each. If dry, two points to Kent. Truly a carbon-neutral event, and saving our oceans from about half a ton of inflatable plastic sticks to boot.

We took a damn good pasting, which was not entirely unexpected.

Albeit T20, we were hammered by a Div 2 side, whose abilities and strengths are generally deemed to be lower than any Div 1 side.

In fact as I look at the team we put out today, I can only identify 3 (at a pinch 4) players whom I consider would be in contention to be signed by another Div 1 side were they to leave Somerset - and that is being generous on my part.

Any advance on 3 or 4?

A lot of speculation today that Jerome Taylor is to become our second T20 player after the Worcester 4 day game.!!!
Just speculation or fact we’ll have to see

I believe Jason Kerr has said we would only sign world class players to enhance our squad.

I'd suggest Jerome Tayloe at 34 doesnt quite match that tag? Has he not retired from Windies? Does he still play? Dont recall seeing him at Big Bash or IPL?
Has he even any T20 pedigree?
Sounds an odd rumour to me.

Did he not play a few games for Sussex last year, not heard of him since.

What are you trying to ask Tom?
How many of our white ball T20 side would be signed be a red ball championship div 1 side?
Not really a logical thing to compare is it?

In answer i'd say Hildy Tom Lewis SD Jamie so 5. Although unsure of any relevance this has!

Max Myby Corey Rvdm are largely white ball players so no real logic why a div 1 red ball side would want them!

Trego & Josh could do a job but would suggest maybe they wouldnt be hot property for the other 7 div 1 sides maybe.

Very unofficially crowd of 5500 was attendance i heard today.
Thats 2500 empty seats.
And it looked it.
Masses of empty blicks in nearly every stand.
Lowest looking crowd i think i've seen for many years.
Very flat atmosphere as a result.
I guess drinkers like Friday nights not Sunday afternoons.

Hugely noticeable how empty the ground is up to 15 mins before kick off as people know they have their seats.

I know we are making huge monies from increased ticket prices but must be loosing stacks on food drink and shop as people arent in the ground to spend money.

I assume our heralded run of sell outs if now at an end......?

PD obvious I would have thought. A Div 1 side is a Div 1 side - full stop. Upon being signed by another county it is they who decide who would form the nucleus of their side in any format of the game. I can't envisage any county in either Division signing any of our players for a White Ball contract only. No doubt you will.

Glad to see that you are still flying the flag for Jamie Overton - needless to say he wasn't in my 3 (possibly 4) players. He has had enough chances and must surely by now have exhausted them.

Well! what can you say about today's performance, in one word bad.

Kent was a better team

The fielding was not good, I thought I was back watching a women's match.
The bowling was undisciplined, six wides, and one no ball. A day when Jamie Overton almost had the best bowling figures.
Batting the score card tell that story.

A uninteresting set of photos today, I had a job of finding any photos worth posting.
