BLAST! Essex en route

Jamie Porter has been released from the England squad and travels with Essex for tonight`s match at Canterbury and tomorrow at Taunton (4.30pm).

New Zealand fast bowler Neil Wagner has returned home, and Aussie veteran Peter Siddle returns as overseas player. Batsman Tom Westley misses out through injury.

Essex, who are currently bottom of the Southern division but have two games in hand, have named a 14-man squad:

Squad: ten Doeschate, Wheater, Bopara, Chopra, Coles, Sam Cook, Foster, Harmer, Lawrence, Porter, Quinn, Siddle, Walter, Zampa.

Somerset have named the same 14-man squad that was on duty against Hampshire.

Essex can hardly be over the moon about the travel schedule the ECB have, in their wisdom, arranged for them this weekend.

They don`t start at Canterbury until 7pm tonight to allow SKY TV time to wrap up their Test match coverage. So they won`t end until 10pm or later..

Say they leave Canterbury at 10.30pm, the 234-mile journey to Taunton at this time of the year is likely to take four to five hours even at night-time, on two of the busiest holiday routes in the country - the M2 and M4.

Then the Taunton match on Friday starts at 4.30pm - two hours earlier than most of the eight others.

And come Saturday, they face the holiday traffic again, ahead of a 2.30 start at Chelmsford on Sunday against Surrey.

TOWIE?

That is utterly ridiculous scheduling.

It's poor.

But Somerset *might* be the beneficiary.

Incidentally, I was looking at our batting figures and Lewis Gregory's batting in T20 really has been remarkable this season - even better than I thought - I think the figures were an average of 48 at a strike rate of 204..

The best way to measure effectiveness in T20 batting (at least statistically) is to multiply average by strike-rate, with higher numbers signifying better performances ... That gives Lewis an 'effectiveness score,' of 9792 at the moment - I'd be very surprised if any batsman in the land has a higher score at present..

Good decision not to send him scurrying to play with the youth team or out on loan then, as was suggest by some a few weeks ago

Setting sun in the batters` and umpires` eyes has halted play at Canterbury.

The BBC, with no sense of irony, has labelled it: Bad Light Stopped Play.

This will mean Essex leaving even later for Taunton at close of play tonight.

Get them quick ➡️ [t.co]

By the groundsman hut?

Or as stated above just stand for 1st few overs then take your pick of any unused premium category A seating.....

It was a strange posting or maybe mistyped, the Link leads to normal pricing and the SEATING plans.
Perhaps the Club have had a slight change of Policy.

Dan Lawrence, Essex`s leading run scorer when they won the championship last summer, has a leg injury and is doubtful for tonight`s match. He batted with a runner at Canterbury last night when Kent won and went to the top of the Southern group.

Likely replacement is veteran wicket keeper-batsman Neil Foster.

For about an hour or less Somerset were top of their group table on Wednesday evening. Since then, without playing a moment of cricket, they have been overtaken twice and are now third. It's tough up at those giddy heights, but we seem to be enjoying some momentum of late.

I commented yesterday on the mystifying lack of form of Steve Davies in white ball, ever since he joined us.

This year he's averaged 14 in T20 and 19 in 50 over stuff. Clearly unacceptable.

Last year?

He averaged 19 in the T20 and a stellar 4.66 in 50 over stuff.

So, in 1.5 seasons, he's amassed averages of 4.66, 19, 14 and 19 in the four white ball sides that he's been a part of for us.

One wonders if there is anyone in the country (other than bowlers) with a worse batting record over the period?

It's quite challenging following the Taunton match, the Test and Western Storm simultaneously. Lie can be so hard sometimes!
