The chase is still on... until it isn't. Off to Hampshire looking for 20 odd once more.

If Hampshire play the same 11 as gained an important win at Worcester in the week, all four seamers will be from overseas - Fidel Edwards, Dale Steyn, Kyle Abbott and Ian Holland (born in the USA and played two years for Victoria).

They have been most of the season with Berg playing instead of Holland

Hampshire name the same squad of 13 that beat Worcestershire. Would have thought Somerset won’t need 2 spinners in this match

Jiove might be rested before the weekend with Davey coming in.They could omit Bess for Roelof or maybe another batsman Bartlett or Lammonsby.

Unfortunately for you, you can't transport the Taunton wicket around the country with you. Steyn, Edwards and Abbott were red hot at Worcester and hopefully will be again for the RLC Winners (who won that competition with a side comprised primarily of home-grown, young or youngish home-grown talent: Alsop, McManus, Weatherley, Brad Taylor, Crane, Vince and Dawson).

Hampshire are very up and down at present: thrashing Notts, getting thumped at Chelmsford, before winning well at Worcester. This probably means Somerset will post a decent score before we bat feebly.

From...

Tom Abell, Azhar Ali, Dom Bess, Josh Davey, Steve Davies, Ben Green, Lewis Gregory, James Hildreth, Jack Leach, Roelof van der Merwe, Craig Overton, Jamie Overton and Marcus Trescothick.

So the batting line-up is unchanged from playing Lancashire. Josh instead of Dom for a seamier attack? Or rest Lewis for finals day if any injury concerns?

We haven't needed to 'transport' it with us before Hants. As long as yours provides for seamers and spinners and we bat better it will be just like being at home - except not against Lancs.

In case you've missed it this season, Somerset can play outside their county borders. Should be a good game if we both play like we did against Worcestershire.

So in the words of Senator Corey Booker..... 'Bring it' (Sm160)

As I understand it, Kyle Abbott found bowling form for more or less the first time this season at New Road, which is inconvenient timing.

For those not down here at the Bowl, Hampshire are unable to offer Live Stream for this match.

Didn't realise this was starting today, but it looks a dreadful morning session given that we must have wanted to bat (regardless of whether or not we opted to or were sent in).

A hangover from the second innings debacle vs Lancs?

And, as against Lancs in that unmitigated shambles, looks as though Ben Green may have been rather better than the others?

If so, well done to Ben.

The rest of the batting is letting the club down in the "crunch-time," part of the season, I'm afraid..

It's the morning for wickets.

Division one. - 15 wickets.
Division two. - 24 wickets.

Perhaps the pitch inspector will be getting interested at the Rose Bowl now!

No pitch inspector is necessary.

A batting inspector, however, would discover that, once again, we are sadly lacking and deficient when it comes to dealing with a moving ball.

Not good enough (and that will still be true even if we bowl Hants out for 120 - that would just mean that there are two batting line-ups playing in this match who are not good enough, as indeed was the case vs Lancs).

Also forget that none of the wickets have fallen to spin so that’s OK

'Average' pitch then. So we didn't 'transport' the Taunton pitch down there after all. Ben Green has applied himself which is good to see.

YOu've clearly not been paying attention, Nailsea.

A number of posters, not including myself, have already made the perfectly valid point that SCCC most certainly seemed to *bottle it* in the last game against Lancs.

Can I now post that the 'chase' is no longer on. Or shouldn't be after that display.

I'd like to know why the Hampshire pitch is not being discussed in the same way that the Taunton pitch was at lunch on Day 1 of the last game. The scores are pretty similar but most of the discussion is about poor batting - also pretty much the same as the first day of the Lancashire game.... is it really simply because a ball hasn't 'spun' or hasn't been 'spun'? How is that an objective analysis?

They 'bottled' it no less and no more than Lancashire did AG. In fact you could argue that couple of them 'bottled' it less (Lewis, Jack maybe Ben).

It was an appalling match for both sides from a batting side but as I suggested to Clarence. Trying to put the blame more on one side than the other is pointless when the bar they both set was so far from acceptable that the comparison is pointless.

It probably didn't even affect us more than it did Lanacashire because our position was probably unchanged by the result and theirs as made little better.

Grockle, That's because certain posters only post with an agenda where Taunton's pitch is concerned, throwing grenades into the conversion but of course they are being oh so erm genuine rather than winding people up.
Ok yeah right.

Because the stupid convention is that a pitch must only turn later in a game, otherwise it's somehow beyond the pale.

Of course, one other difference is that, when wickets fall to pace bowlers, then swing is often partly responsible (as today) and no pitch can be blamed for movement through the air (and nor should it be).

Anyway, today's "performance," may have demonstrated to all and sundry (if there were any doubt) that we were rushed out twice by Lancs, not because the pitch was an unplayable minefield, but rather because we aren't good enough to consistently deal, in satisfactory fashion, with quality bowlers when conditions are somewhat in their favour.

In conditions where the ball is swinging a bit and there's a little seam movement, we shouldn't expect totals of 400, but we should expect at least some application and crease occupation and making the opposition fight. Being bowled out in 37 overs is never acceptable unless it's a trampoline pitch versus Marshall, Holding, Roberts and Garner, or a Bunsen with Warne and Macgill.

Execrable.

That may very well be possible Kilmainham but it is also the case from those not directly related to the club. It seems if a side fails against seam it is OK and nothing is wrong but if they fail against spin on Day 1 it is unusual unless it is England in Sri Lanka, India or anywhere else on the subcontinent.

We really do need to look at the inspection conditions. Is it something to do with Global Warming do you think? (TiC)

AGod - I only pay attention to the unbiased and knowledgeable posts not non qualified phyco analysts

Still looks like a poor decision to bat from afar or a poor batting performanve
