A (Trent) Bridge Too Far

Nottinghamshire, who are technically still not clear of relegation, will include their two new batsman, Ben Duckett and Ben Slater, against Somerset at Trent Bridge on Monday. But all-rounder Zak Chappell, the third player they have collected from neighbouring Second Division counties this month, does not join the staff until next season.

Left-arm seamer Luke Wood, who played in Worcestershire`s winning 20/20 Blast side on loan last weekend, will be back at Notts, but Stuart Broad, named this week in the England touring party for Sri Lanka, is unlikely to play.

Great thread title, from A Film Too Long, gives some end of season fun... I've put the players (based on Surrey game) for the roles of stars in that film as follows:

Marcus Trescothick = Sir Laurence Olivier
Tom Banton = James Caan
Azhar Ali = Gene Hackman
James Hildreth = Sir Dirk Bogarde
Tom Abell = Edward Fox
Steve Davies = Ryan O'Neal
Craig Overton = Robert Redford
Jamie Overton = Sir Michael Caine
Tim Gronewald = Elliot Gould
Josh Davey = Sir Sean Connery
Jack Leach = Sir Anthony Hopkins

"Jamie Overton = Sir Michael Caine."

Now, "not a lot of people know that!"

It was more like 'Oh bloody hell not us at the front again'. There's a few uncomfortable parallels and comparisons with the roles of those actors in that film

Marcus would be looking after the walking and not so fortunate wounded.

Ali would be the non US/UK combatant who didn't get there until the end and could only help those still alive get out.

Tom Banton, the stubborn non com who would not take no for an answer

Poor old Steve...important but not in the film for long.

Craig. Doing his job in impossible conditions through a hail of bullets

Tim. Getting there just too late and then having to build a bridge to keep things moving forward.

Jack. Right on the front line, holding it while waiting for the others to arrive with Josh 'you said 2 overs...I've bowled 9' Davey.

Back in the real world, Lewis Gregory, who doesn`t even seem to have landed the role of an extra in the film, returns to a 13-man Somerset squad:

Abell Ali, Banton, Bess, Davey, Davies, Gregory, Groenewald, Hildreth, Leach, C. Overton, J. Overton, Trescothick.

Notts, who yesterday made Worcestershire batsman Joe Clarge their fourth new signing this month, will be without West Indian opener Kraigg Brathwaite, who has returned to the Caribbean.

They will choose from 14: Libby, Mullaney, Wessels, Gurney, Wood, Milnes, Fletcher, Carter, Patel, Moores, Slater, Fraine, Blatherwick, Duckett.

Essex, who must beat Surrey at The Oval this week to have any chance of catching Someset in second place, will face more or less the same side as played at Taunton this week - minus Tom Curran, who joins brother Sam on the `rested` list, and Dean Elgar who has returned to South Africa.

Jason Roy plays his second championship match of the season, and Stuart Meaker, Gareth Batty, Ryan Patel and Will Jacks are also in the squad.

CMJ when you said "Essex, who must beat Surrey at The Oval this week to have any chance of catching Someset in second place" My thoughts went to that match that stopped us winning the championship. (I avoided say fixed)

Cant see Milnes playing as off to Kent next week.
Never heard if Fraine nor Blatherwick.

I'd stick with same 11.
Can see Dom getting a go just to show we have not forgotten about him.

Notts need 5 points to stay up so guessing it will not be green as they can't risk a low scoring loss just incase.

Forecast looks fair all 4 days.

Dom might get a game if they have to rake the leaves off the wicket.

I understand that Notts live stream is not on YouTube!

Ben in the office said he will try and put a link to the Notts live stream on the clubs website.

As Surrey are 48 for 5 does that mean that the Oval pitch is below average. After all, 4 of the wickets are Test players!!

Always happy to see a Banger innings WSM but until we get this more often than not I personally won't be crowing because you can't say 2018 is one of his better seasons and his position is so vital to the whole batting line up.

Marcus gone, shame, let's hope we don't fall away too quickly from here. James needs to top 1000 runs here and more.

Well done to James Hildreth, 1000 county championship runs for the season.

Abell has a very outside chance of getting 1000 CC runs this season. He has improved massively this season in all formats. Batting nicely today as well.

What a lovely morning to wake up to.

Not an “execrable” in sight, Another 50 for James and Marcus gets a decent score of 71, four more than the world beaters Surrey managed in their entire first innings total 67 !

Pitch inspectors to the Oval no doubt, with mass ECB and media hysteria and threats of point deductions to follow ?!!

Did I read somewhere that Sky were broadcasting the Surrey game live ? Where do I find that in the t.v. listings - under ‘comedy’ ?

Strange that a certain poster from Surrey has gone a.w.o.l. !

Grizzly, Essex don't seem to be having the same problems that Surrey did. It would be nice to secure second place and see Surrey fail to go unbeaten through the season. Both looking good possibilities at the moment.

Agree entirely MB.

The day just got better. The wonders of technology have allowed me to live stream the game onto the main tv in our lounge.

A pretty fair guess that it’s the only one in Western Canada showing Notts v Somerset right now !

Surely, Surrey wouldn’t lose to Essex just to deny Somerset (who they don’t believe deserve to be in the first division let alone runner-up) second place winnings, would they? And especially if it meant they didn’t retain their unbeaten record. No, too silly for words.

There should be no reason to take any notice of the Surrey game. If we don't get 6 points from this game/position then I don't feel that we could really be that aggrieved by finishing 3rd.

Perhaps that awful Surrey innings of today should have been at Taunton last week, after we'd set them ~120 to win in 30 overs?

No arguments with Grockle that in terms of pure numbers the jury's still out on whether Trescothick deserves an unconditional place at number one in this line-up. The fact is, he got a pair last week, and nothing takes that away. But ... my word, the timing in some of those softly stroked boundaries today was simply poetry.

Imagine him as a floating figure in the middle order, lurking, ready to come in when the time is right. Imagine the pressure on the opposition knowing he's just waiting to be unleashed against tired bowlers with an old ball.

The fact also is he virtually carried his bat the week before on a awful piitch and conditions at Hampshire.
