England in Sri Lanka

England begin their Sri Lanka tour today with a 50 over match against a SLC XI. The home side won the toss and batted, making 287-9 in their 50 overs. Captain Dinesh Chandimal top scored with 77, whilst Moeen Ali was the pick of the bowlers with 3-42 off his 10 overs.

In reply England were 132-2 off 24 overs, Joe Root and Eoin Morgan have an unbroken partnership of 90 after Roy and Bairstow both fell in the opening 9 overs.

Most exciting moment so far for cricket tragics was the sight of ambidextrous bowler Kamindu Mendis, who had already made 61 batting at 6, bowling right arm offspin to Morgan and slow left arm to Root in the same over.

An ambidextrous bowler eh?

I seem to recall a story that when Somerset played against the Pakistani touring time in 1954 ?, the legendary Hanif Mohammad, who was not a recognised bowler, changed his style from right to left or vice versa in the middle of an over, and because he failed to notify the Umpire in advance he was duly 'no - balled'.

I can't find any confirmation of it in print which I normally like to do before posting anything on here. I wonder if anyone else can confirm or otherwise.

CP: I was at that match and clearly remember our surprise at that over by Hanif, but I do not remember whether a no ball was called. Hanif also scored a century in that meatch and we regarded him as something of a miracle

Edited to add that the match was sixteen-year old Graham Atkinson's first for Somerset and I shall always remember the brilliant running catch he took in front of what is now the Somerset Stand. Another hero was born that day.

Liam Dawson is returning from Sri Lanka having suffered a side strain. He will be replaced by Joe Denly, already selected in the Test squad, who will fly out early.

I had read of Hanif bowling with both arms (not at once, obviously) in the course of an over, but never realised it happened at Taunton. Chris Benham of Hants was another who did so at first-class level.

I twice did the same myself in the closing stages of club matches - and (in a different match) was batting when an opposition bowler did the same thing. Is this a record?

Graham Atkinson taking a brilliant running catch also sounds a bit surprising - but surprising things do happen at cricket, perhaps slightly more often than predictable ones.

The England and Wales Cricket Board defended the decision to tour Sri Lanka during monsoon season, after a third successive one-day international was affected by rain. [www.bbc.co.uk]

I wouldn't think they would do otherwise.

Jonny Bairstow could miss England's fourth one-day international against Sri Lanka after twisting his ankle playing football in training. [www.bbc.co.uk]

Football again.

No Leach, looks like our man could be in for a long winter watching from the side lines.

As soon as they added Joe Denly to the squad, I did think Jack Leach might move down the pecking order, but fingers crossed his omission is due to his only recent arrival in Sri Lanka.
If he does get a game he will need to impress.

As England's most successful bowler this chap Reti Redout must be a shoo-in for the first Test..

I was thinking that might mean our Jack might not get a bowl on the whole tour - then the guy on BBC radio said exactly the same thing!

Only the ECB could schedule a tour of Sri Lanka in the monsoon season. It is all part of the plan to phase out Test cricket.

There is a chance that the second SL v England test in Pallekele will be moved to Colombo. The Earl Regency hotel, a short trip from the ground, has been overbooked with England supporters tour groups and Sri Lanka Cricket can't have the 80 rooms required for the two teams and their back room staff. SLC have offers England accommodation in Dambulla, a two hour drive away from the ground, which the ECB has rightly deemed unacceptable.

I don't really think Jack is up against Curran for a Test place - Sam only plays if Woakes doesn't, I think. Denly's not had a good day (yet), tho I think England would like him to bat at 3. I think Jack only plays in the First Test if England leave out both Rashid and Broad - which I don't expect.

I know it's only a friendly warm up match but Jack had a good bowl.

13 overs 1 for 29.

To me, 13 overs means that he is under serious consideration. No-one else bowled more than 7.

Jack will play. Never in doubt.

Six of the Cricketer's writers have picked their XIs for the first Test. He is in every one.

Also nice interview on BBC website.
