Nearly done with 2018 then. 2019 may be ours, May be another year of 'nearly' or may be just 'it'.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to one and all. May 2019 bring you all you hope for on and off the pitch.

Thanks for the contributions this year especially those from Mike once again and Farmer for the first time. You all contribute to make this site what it is.

Without you it ceases to exist but with you it becomes something unique in the domestic cricket world in my opinion.

With the cricketing world changing around us there is a lot to talk about next year and some challenges for provincial cricket supporters like ourselves in the year's to come.

Interesting times. Hope to have your company as we move through and interact with them.

A Merry Christmas to everyone.

My Christmas offering should miraculously appear on my website at one minute past midnight.

Here is the link to the home page where it will appear...

[farmerwhite.co.uk]

Before midnight you will still get the last day of the Chelmsford match 2018 with shades of the 1958 Ilford match in parallel. That will, appropriately, slip into second place on the home page when the Christmas offering appears.

I will also put the Christmas offering on this thread when I am eventually released from kitchen duties sometime tomorrow afternoon.

And so, as Samuel Pepys used to say, to bed.

I have been released from the kitchen on a brief period of parole so here is my version of Christmas Day at the county ground under floodlights.....

It’s Christmas Day at the County Ground and the lights are shining bright

But some elves were in and hatched a plan in the middle of the night.

They smirked their knowing smiles around as they scaled the pylons’ heights.

Then removed the leds and replaced them all with sparkling fairy lights.

Then the players all took the field of play resplendent in their whites.

Cricketers on a cricket field; the greatest of England’s sights.

It’s been like that since Palairet played and reached the batting heights.

But how will they look when they bat and bowl under the fairy lights?

To see a paceman in his pomp is usually quite a sight

But turning blue and red and green it cannot surely be right.

As the ball flies along its chosen path the batsman has a fright.

It started green, then red, then pink – now it’s blue and so are his whites.

The spinner inspects this colourful ball, grips it hard with fingers tight.

It turns green, then red, then blue again before going yellow bright.

That’s red as it flies, blue when it lands, yellow as the turf it bites

And green again as it matches the grass and eludes the batsman’s sight.

All twenty batsmen a golden duck. It must infringe their rights.

But this is the future come to play. It’s enough to give you the frights.

And now we’ll break our rhyme to reveal this future beyond our ken.

Cricket by elves under fairy lights. With festive greetings from ‘The Ten’.

I am afraid the elves do not seem to want to come across so for anyone who wants to see the 'illustrated' - well slightly illustrated - version will need to go across to see them via this link:

It's also that time of year when the New Year honours are announced. Below the radar of Alastair Cook's prematurely announced knighthood, Matt Maynard is awarded an MBE for services to sport and charity.

Well done Matt Maynard, great recognition.

Did he get the Head Coach role at Glamorgan? An unsung side, whoever watches them are also heroes

Apropos of very little, and with no relevance to this site, I was pleased to see recognition for the great William Blackledge Beaumont.

A very happy new year to all - especially to the very good friends I have made through this site.

As some of you know, I stay with my mother when watching cricket at Taunton. I hope that it is not too self-indulgent to wish her a very happy 100th birthday on 1st January (not that she likes to be reminded of her age). We will be celebrating the occasion with a party for friends and family on the day.

A long way from self-indulgent, Wickham.

A very happy birthday to her, and a true party of celebration for you all.

Congratulations to your mother Wickham.

What an unprecedented century of momentous historic events she has lived through. Just a few spring to mind. 1929: JC White's 13 for 256 off 124 overs at Adelaide to beat the Aussies. 1935: Harold Gimblett's debut century at Frome. 1953: Bertie Buse's benefit match. 1985: Viv Richard's 322. 2018: Matt Renshaw's century before lunch on an April greentop.

Does she have a momentous event in mind for 2019 by any chance?

Wish her well from me

I believe former captain and `keeper Mark Wallace got the top job at Glamorgan, Somerset LaLaLa, but Matt Maynard is still on the staff.

Many cricket references to a human century but the main one is that the Wickham family remains intact at the crease. Congratulations to your mother sir.

It's less than 100 days to cricket balls being dispatched in competitive anger. I was down at the ground yesterday and the place looked in fine fettle. Hope everyone who passes through here is in the same state for 2019.

As promised here is my New Year offering from my website for the grockles record:

APRIL’S COMING

Six months moping,

Six months hoping,

Six months dreaming,

Six months awaiting

April’s coming.

October’s heart is exhausted.

November’s heart tormented.

December’s heart distracted.

New Year fireworks sound half way

To April’s coming.

January’s heart is sprightly.

February’s heart beats quickly.

March’s heart throbs wildly.

The equinox floats lightly

For April’s coming.

April arrives brightly

The season starts forthrightly

Winter’s dreams meet reality

Recurring nightmares hang heavily

For six months purgatory’s incoming.

It comes every year

It’s agony every year

But we have never missed it yet

For we support Somerset

Until October’s coming.

And

Six months moping…

And for the record link direct to the poem here: [farmerwhite.co.uk]

Back to the endless whirling of the years all...

Many thanks for the kind messages.

A party for over 80 family members and friends, her grand-daughter coming over from New Zealand, speeches by her son (which made mention of Somerset cricket) and grandson, and a reply by the centenarian. I reckon that counts as reaching three figures with a six!
