Matthew Renshaw is in the Australian Test squad for the two matches against Sri Lanka. His performances for Somerset are cited as one of the reasons although the opportunity was created by a clear out after the defeat by India. Another reason cited is ten first class centuries by the age of 22.

Seems fairly sound reasoning. Just as well we went for Azhar.
Btw I see Azhar fields at slip for India.
Does our placing him in the deep last year indicate the superiority of our own slip fielders, or a misunderstanding of his best position? He is not an especially athletic mover, and while his deep fielding was generally competent (on a par with Jack Leach's) it was hardly tigerish.

Surprised to see Azhar Ali has switched his loyalty to India. Last seen he was fielding at slip for Pakistan.

...and he went first ball to Philander this afternoon - all in all, not his best day 🙁

In response to a, 'request' from Somerset La La La on the 'Countdown Clock' thread for a poem with the message 'Jack for the Ashes' in it I put the poem below on my website with a link on the 'Countdown Clock' thread. However I think this is the more appropriate thread for it on grockles so here it is. Just in case anyone misses the message it is in the first letter of each line...

TWO SOMERSET JACKS

Just suppose our spinning Jacks could meet awhile
And swap their tales of batsmen put to flight.
Confer about the dip and drift and the secrets of their style.
Keeping the faith of the art of spin, keeping it shining bright.

For what price to hear a word or two of that precious tete-a-tete?
Or see them bowl an over or two, and in tandem keep it tight
Revealing the styles of the present time and of nineteen-twenty-eight.

The best there was and the best there is, both getting it just right.
How would they then compare their notes of batsmen in disarray?
Endless variations of flight and line each to the other would cite.

And batsmen the country up and down would signal their dismay.
So cast your mind back ninety years to the Ashes of Jack White
He scorched the Aussies at Adelaide with thirteen for two-five-six.
Endlessly flighting and pitching the ball on a spot the size of a mite.
So now, in another Ashes year, may a new Jack ply his tricks.

George Bartlett has also signed a new deal. It is good to see players not being attracted to other parts by this abysmal '100' plan. I hope it is no different at the end of 2020 when we have experienced it and havea better perception of what the effects are in the longer term.

Good to see Jack Leach has signed a contract extension, even if it is only for one more year.

England Lions playing first game of Sri Lankan tour, 50-over game v Board XI.

England 255-6 off their 50, Gregory 25* off 16 balls, Bess 5* off 7. Alex Davies got 100.
Jamie Overton also playing, didn't bat.

Lost by 4 wickets 4 balls to spare.

Full 10 overs for our 3 bowlers in a 5 man attack all 1 wicket each.

Englands top 6 had 5 wicketkeepers!

A good run out, very hot!

Another warm up game Sunday then into the 1st of 5 ODI's on Wednesday

It seems that the fast route to international selection these days is to be a batsman who can also keep wicket - whether you expect to keep wicket at international level or not.
The absolute death-knell is to keep wicket even better than you bat, because this makes you A Specialist (even if you bat as well as Chris Read or James Foster), and specialist wicket-keepers are taboo. Adam Gilchrist made it so.
