Tom Abell and Dom Bess return from MCC duty in Dubai for Somerset`s second - and final - warm-up match against Middlesex, starting a Taunton Vale tomorrow.

Tim Banton, Tim Groenewald and Paul van Meekeren are also named in the 14-man squad, with Lewis Gregory and Steve Davies rested from the side that set a record UK winning margin over Cardiff MCCU yesterday. Jamie Overton is unavailable through injury.

Squad: Abell (c), Azhar Ali, Trescothick, Hildreth, Bartlett, Byrom, Banton, C.Overton, Bess, Davey, Groenewald, Leach, Brooks, van Meekeren.

Middlesex, who are expected to challenge for one of the three promotion places from Division Two this season, this week added former Hampshire all-rounder Dimitri Mascarenhas to their coaching squad. They offer an experienced seam attack in Murtagh, Roland-Jones, Finn and Harris.

Am I right in thinking that the Middlesex match will not be deemed first-class?

And niggles turn into strains and strains turn into something worse at times, and before we know it a quarter of the season has gone.

A glass half - empty or a glass half - full?
Regardless, both glasses need filling up.

Ah, as regular as night turns to day, it's like slipping on an old pair of shoes after a period of abscence.

But it is a fair point when it comes to our bowlers who start or finish seasons with 'niggles'. Tim's at the end of 2018 was one such.

Do I assume what you are referring to as "familiar" Nailsea, is Jamie Overton's fitness record?

Will Byrom have to open with Ali against Kent after Trescothick’s abysmal start?

Well you've got to wonder about the meritocracy haven't you? One of the worst aspects of our first innings starts last year were the sparse offerings before we gave up our first wicket. Not always MT to be fair but wasn't he the most frequent culprit?

I expect him to start because of tradition but it MUST be a consideration early on if it continues to happen. We CANNOT start badly this year with 1 down and 3 up. The relegated county will have a mountain to climb, especially if the South East clubs below come up.

We certainly mustn’t play him for old-times-sake. The coach needs to be brave from the start.

I don't think they will but his experience will probably swing the first one.

Is it worth the gamble? Can't say I'm entirely convinced so he may score a ton. As you say CH. We gotta play the best XI.

Byrom has batted really well at 5 so wouldn't like to see him move up to open.More lightly Green or Banton me thinks depending on the set up of the team.Would personally like to see Davies and Gregory at 6 and 7 rather than 5 and 6 particularly early season

Both Overton boys dealing with niggles with 5 days to go. Let's hope Jamie was held back to be right for Kent and Craig was put in mothballs for the same reason.

Good Job Jack Brooks is here and Josh looks in good nick. Tim in the wickets in this game as well.

Off to the Vale today. In view of the opposition and the date I'm sorely tempted to bring a rake.

Got to look to the future, and that means not playing Trescothick at this stage of the season.

He has had his day! Got to give some of our youngsters full rein to judge whether they will make it or not.
