Got it in 2, Wickham.

I'm not sure whether Clare (not Claire) Taylor also qualifies.

One of your easier ones, LoL - once I had found out who Demetriou is!

If you don't know who he is the answer makes no more sense than the question.

True, Grock!

My implication was that Demetriou is considerably less well-known than Leslie Compton was - only partly because the latter had a rather high-profile and well Brycreemed brother.
I suppose Arsenal then as now are marginally better known than Newport County.

Clare Taylor? One way she qualifies is obvious, but I'm struggling with the second unless her hockey skills were greater than I realised, or she was a member of a popular music combo (!)

That was indeed an easy one for those with the wit to go directly to Wikipedia.

Demetriou played for Newport County in the recent cup tie against Tottenham at Wembley.
Some years ago he played for Finedon in the final of the National Village Cup at Lord's. Not many individuals have appeared at both these notable headquarters, though we know that Leslie Compton did. I am still not sure whether double international Clare Taylor is also a member of this small club.

Graham Cross played in two losing FA Cup finals for Leicester City and in the winning Leicestershire side in the 1975 B&H cup.

Brilliant spot HR.

Didn't Jim Standen play in West Ham's FA Cup-winning team in 1964? And he must surely have played for Worcs against Middx at Lord's at some point?

Tsk, I browse the Grockles forum for the first time in absolutely ages, and what's the first thing I see?

Seriously, this thread is older than my teenage children ... and that'll be me wasting the next hour or so while I catch up with it :-)

Lovely to see you posting.

Welcome back, SS. We could do with your common sense in these hyperactive days.

It will take you a lot longer than an hour. Some months ago I revisited the early pages of the PQQ thread (for whose genesis I must take responsibility) and gave up after ninety postings, not because I was not fascinated by it but because there is so much more in life to be fascinated by. including how to avoid ending sentences prepositions with.

Hello Bobstan - hoping to catch you at some actual fixtures this year! Although anyone who remembers facing the bowling of the small, cute, ss jr 1 at teatime many years ago might wish to decline such an offer now ...

I may have to come fully kitted out to face ssjnr1 ! Or I may have to send on a reserve; perhaps Tractor, Rob or Mike TA1.

Not a bit cryptic and not terribly abstruse, but in honour of Jack and Craig's near-miss today (and slightly inspired by postings on another thread):

Two (current at the time, i.e. not Close/Parks or Botham/Tavare) Somerset players have taken the field together for England in a Test on 46 occasions, in seven different combinations. (I refer to the team composition rather than their attire). As many and as varied details as possible please, preferably without looking up (I trust you).

Three players figure on the list twice.

Good question mikeindex. Here's my starter for ten from the ones I can recall:

Rose and Botham
Botham and Marks
Caddick and Lathwell
Trescothick and Johnson (as already pointed out by somebody on another thread)

I imagine that Rumsey and Palmer may have overlapped, as may Palairet and Braund, but I would need to look it up to get any more...

Four-plus out of seven for KB, an excellent first attempt.
Rumsey and Palmer played within about six months of each other but not in the same Test, so quite right to reject them.
Caddick-Lathwell, excellent spot.
No comment on the rest for now.

As I said on the other thread, it is rather obvious that Tres and Caddy will have appeared in the same England side on a large number of occasions.

People have mentioned Beefy and Victor.

There’s a possibility that Brian Rose and Victor would have been another pair that appeared in tandem.

I also wonder if Trescothick was in the England side when IDB was inserted for his lone Test?

Narrow miss AG - Marcus was embarked on his 24-hour flight home (Alastair Cook flying a similar distance to take his place) following his (MT's) father-in-law's sad accident, just prior to Blackie's (embarrassing) single Test.

...PS Tres and Caddy account for 28 of the 46.

I'm upgrading KB to 5/7 as Palairet and Braund is (?are) perfectly correct (2 Tests, 1902).

One pair to go.

Lone test Jack MacBryan? Which would probably mean the other Jack Farmer White

When Blackie played is only Test in Nagpur (one of three England debutants) Marcus had already left the tour due to illness. They did play together in ODI teams, though.

@SLLL good thinking, but the Farmer did not play in jack MacBryan's only Test. (I had to look this up to see if I'd got the question wrong).

mikeindex,

I think we have determined the following 6 of the 7 pairings you have identified:

Braund and Palairet
Rose and Botham
Botham and Marks
Caddick and Lathwell
Caddick and Trescothick
Trescothick and Johnson

I do now know the missing couple but I had to use references to confirm, so respecting the tradition of the PQQ thread I won't post it.

Enjoyed the question - Thanks!
