Alfonso Thomas released, and Phillips injured again.

Didn't like the sound of your posting, CP, until I read the article. AT's early arrival looks like good news for SCCC.

This injury list suggests that Ben may be a bit part player in this season. More pressure on the young pacemen!

We discussed Alfie's release from his province last week. It's part of a stated policy to develop local youth, and so may not reflect in anyway badly on Alfonso.
I like the idea of his elevation to VC: having a bowler (and particularly such an experienced one) to be MT's first sounding board makes perfect sense to me.

Alfie would be a great choice for VC.
He's a whole hearted player, will try his guts out and has a real passion for the County.
I'd be happy to see him in the main job, maybe he will be a few times this year.

I love the bloke (Alfie that is).

It does not sound as if Grockle shares Mr Rose's optimism re: a rapid recovery for Phillips. Not sure if this is because there is news that the club are not making public in this respect or simply because of Ben's injury history.

It will certainly be bad timing if he misses the first few away games, as I suspect those tracks might suit him.

Having said that, that is based on the assumption that they will be the kind of northern seamers that Mr Rose was expecting. However, I'm struggling to remember a drier period of winter weather than we've had this year, so it might possibly be that Mr Rose's expectations are confounded (unless, of course, the heavens are shortly to open.)

You do realise all that white stuff we had on the ground a while ago was water, don't you? winking smiley

The weather station at Cambrige has, according to the BBC, recorded its wettest February since 1990.

I do - just as surely as you surely realise that it {the snow{ amounts to very little actual water. That is why this winter has been, officially, one of the driest winters on record (to date, with only six or so days left.)

With the few (16) first - class games that Phillips has played for Somerset in the three years that he has been with the club, I don't imagine that Rose pencilled him in to be an 'ever - present' in the side for 2010.

97 games for three different counties in 14 seasons as a professional, is hardly an impressive playing record, is it?

He's certainly been unfortunate with injuries.

Ben Phillips stats says it all CP

It just seems that bowlers who start seasons with injuries tend to be bit part players in that season as they try to get the right amount of recovery time and playing time balance in synch.

Rose, Johnson, Turner, Caddick and Phillips all come to mind in the recent past. I therefore don't expect Ben's involvement to be significant if this injury is anything but a very slight niggle.

With Mark's injury record as well, the onus comes back to a significant year of performance from Mr Stiff or someone new to the scene.

I understand that we are to have an Italian Restaurant under the new apartment block and it is due to open in June.

Should make a change from the Fish & Chips, etc available at present, and of course provide extra income for the club

Sounds most welcome, EH, provided of course that they know how to make real Italian pasta i.e. cooked Al Dente and not swimming in sauce!

Quite agree AG, or will it be Pizza and Chips covered in Tomato ketchup.

In which case I will stick to my own sandwiches.

Given the county's geographical location, will it be called Western Spaghetti?

And, given the restaurant's location, will there be a "cover" charge?

I'll certainly be keen to taste a square leg of lamb there.

Something for you all to read, the history of a Somerset player.

John Lawrence, known as "Johnny", was a diminutive Yorkshire-born all-round cricketer whose middle or lower order batting and leg-break and googly bowling were of great importance to Somerset in the 10 cricket seasons immediately after the Second World War.
