No longer with us, but it seems Arthur Godsal must have signed a pro contract with Hants, as he is currently substitute fielder in the test match.

At Essex, Peter Siddle will continue as their overseas player in 2019 and 2020, but Ashar Zaidi and Callum Taylor have been released.

Northamptonshire have signed Zimbabwean fast bowler Blessing Muzarabani on a contract until 2021, which will begin in 2019.

Richard Gleeson leaves Northants for Lancashire.

My sense of justice and fair play is particularly offended by this move.

Gleeson, born in Blackpool, and just like John Simpson, Lancashire couldn't see the talent on their own doorstep. Cric info says Gleeson was coaching for the Lancashire Cricket Board, and playing minor counties for Cumberland when Northants gave him a late chance at first class cricket.

Does well, and Lancashire, who missed his ability years ago, says 'Thanks very much, Northants' and sign the bloke whose talent they clearly couldn't see years ago.

Cricketer moves back to where he was brought up. Why is that an issue? Would we be complaining if Alex Hales were to move to Middlesex?

Same sort of thing though.

The 'expert' coaches don't always get it right.

Would it be Watkinson who decided neither Simpson or Gleeson were worth a contract?

But this sort of thing happens all the time. Some players are late developers. Some don't get contracts because other players look a bit better or because they are well-stocked with keepers, fast bowlers or whatever. Some miss out because they are seen as immature, not team men, boozers or whatever. All of these can change as players move into their twenties or beyond, so it is not surprising that expert coaches; views at one time can look wrong a few years later. And far better that a club/coach accepts that the player is better and gets them back than to stick their fingers in their ears and pretend otherwise!
