The fact he lead Middlesex to the County Championship title puts James Franklin in an excellent position in the race to captain us in the Championship in 2017.

All of our Championship overseas players since Iain O‘Brien in 2010 have been batsmen, so I imagine that will once again be the case in 2017, especially as we will be well-stocked in the pace and spin departments provided most of our players remain available (which probably won’t happen now I’ve written that!). I am sure we would prefer to sign someone who can play the whole season like many of the club’s great overseas signings, but the amount of cricket that goes on during our season means we may have to consider dividing this role among two or three signings. If Adam Voges decides to retire at the end of the current Australian season as he has suggested he may, then that would rule him out, but if he is keen to continue and wishes to play county cricket, then he would surely be available for the whole season due to it appearing that he has made his final Australia appearance. If some of our bowlers get injured or receive international call-ups, then that could result in us reacting by attempting to sign an overseas player in that department, although that would be a kick in the teeth for our fringe players.

Do we need anyone?

Robson, Gubbins, Compton, Malan, Franklin, Simpson, then one of Eskinazi, stirling, Holden, Higgins (depending on which of those 4 gets the nod they might bat higher than 7) Rayner, Roland-Jones, Murtagh, Finn. When Finn unavailable, or rotation, Harris, Fuller, Helm, Podmore, plus if we need 2nd spinner, Patel.

Tempting to say we must have an overseas bat, but Higgins followed up a 2nd XI hundred with a 300 in the 2's a week later at the tail end of last season, and if Holden is good enough to captain England U19's he at least should get a chance to start his first team career in 2017.

Loads of options for us. Signing someone could drive home produced players elsewhere.

I wish you'd said "signing again" rather than "resigning". Doesn;t do the hart any good, that.

Really pleased for Tom having seen his 2016 season come to an abrupt end at Hove with an injury.

this shows a good deal of foresight by the club to not only retain but reward with a decent contract a young and up and coming player.

Go well next season Tom and do us all proud.

Rumours of a Nick Compton retirement appear to have greatly exaggerated.

Here for another 2 years.

Anshy Rath seems to have a high enough reputation for Cricinfo’s George Dobell to deem it newsworthy that it is expected Middlesex will soon hand Rath a permanent contract.

As expected Higgins is no more.

Barber, Scott and White sign new deals.

My guess is they are likely to be two year deals, but the length hasn't been confirmed.

At tonight’s forum, Richard Goatley commented on speculation that Dawid Malan is out of contract, saying that Malan signed a ‘long-term contract’ in January. I don’t know why this wasn’t announced, although it is great he will remain with the club.

Tom Barber’s contract seems to be for two seasons, although it doesn't seem that the length of George Scott and Robbie White’s contracts have been disclosed.
