Other county championship matches 2017
chunkyinargyll (IP Logged)

The County championship gets underway tomorrow.

Division one games are-

Essex V Lancs
Surrey v Warwickshlre
Yorks v Hants

Good weather forecast means it is likely all these matches will produce a positive result. What's the betting it will rain next weekend, when we kick off by taking on Hants?

Leicestershire have been deducted 16 County Championship points and captain Mark Cosgrove will miss their opening match, as Charlie Shreck's conduct in a match v Loughborough MCCU meant they had incurred a fifth fixed penalty in 12 months. A similar penalty was imposed on the club in 2015.

Loughborough's performances v Leicestershire and Northamptonshire were at the level expected of a county club, so surely they will do well when they face other universities this summer. Their ranks include Robbie White and his former fellow Middlesex Academy player Charlie Thurston.

Fairly brainless of Shreck to lose his county 16 points before the season has even started.

And to lose them for losing your head in a pre-season friendly!

Kind of makes Shreck look a bit of an ogre.

Doubt Poddy expected to be coming in to bat with Glammy on 67-7

Glammy 101 all out.

Northants 27-3

Poddy gets Maxi out for a duck.

If the pitch inspectors are called, we could end up with 3 out of 10 Division 2 sides on minus points at the end of the first round of matches!

A good day so far for Durham Surrey, who are 246-2

Surrey’s performance today will give ammunition to those who fancy them to do well this season. However, there is a long way to go in this match and in the season. Maybe Warwickshire will also enjoy batting in this match.

Another county fancied to do well were Hampshire, mainly because of the amount of Kolpak players they signed in the winter, something which means England Lions’ Tom Alsop cannot get into their side. I thought that Michael Carberry's return meant they would be destined to do well. However, they close on 58-5 in reply to Yorkshire’s 273, so that was not the start they planned. Yorkshire’s bowling attack seems weak, but it gave Ben Coad the opportunity to take all five Hampshire wickets on his fourth first-class appearance.

So nice to see the side that should not even be in Div 1 performing to type against last seasons runners up.

As for young Stoneman, congratulations on being the scorer of the first county ton of the season.Just a shame you couldn't have done it with Durham but careers can be short and Surrey have deep pockets. They might come unstuck and get very few games out of him should the selectors come calling.

Warwickshire currently impersonating your typical university side, as they are 42-5 replying to Surrey 454.

Edit- make that 42-7

James Harris 3-26, as Glos collapse 61 all out (which represented a 'recovery' from 37-9.

Some truly abject performances with the bat from some counties this week.

Well played Hampshire!

(Sm152)

Been listening all day. Didn't want to post in case I jinxed them.

Bergie hitting a six to win the game.

A certain forum complaining Hants fielded 25 kolpaks in this match, whilst the ECB insisted Yorkshire rest 258 of their first choice players (ok slight exaggeration- but not by much)

Yorkshire have now lost their last 3 county games.

Prior to this match, Yorkshire's defeat to Somerset in the penultimate round of last season's County Championship matches was the only one of their five most recent defeats to have not come v Middlesex. As I have said, I can see Hampshire doing well this season, so I don’t think their victory v Yorkshire will be a fluke result.

The scale of Warwickshire's deficit means it should only be a matter of time before Surrey win. However, stranger things than a Warwickshire win have happened. The fact Surrey have been in the field for more than 140 overs will help Warwickshire's hopes of turning the match around.

Glamorgan doing a very passable imitation of being Cardiff University 105-8 to add to last weeks 2 day defeat.

Last couple of Glammy batsmen stuck around with young Lloyd who scored 80 plus in an innings which they scraped to just over 200. Worcs in reply were 1 down to the first ball of their inning and 2 down within 2 overs.

Well done to Max Holden on so far being 68 not out for Northamptonshire v Derbyshire. He is within 4 of the top score in the match, which makes a mockery of him being shunted down to number 7. After Derbyshire posted 281, Holden came in at 153-5, which then became 171-8, but his innings has helped Northants to a lead.

I don’t know why James Harris is not playing for Kent v Sussex.

Like many matches at Taunton, Somerset v Essex is likely to produce a result, which is a situation that would give Somerset an advantage over Middlesex if Somerset are on the right end of these results.

A few counties and players have expressed their unhappiness about the restrictions being placed on the availability of England players for their counties, especially as several England players were given permission to play at the IPL without restrictions on their availability.
