Good gawd!

I assume it isn't a very good wicket, but even so we have five capped players in the side, and we were all out for 82 (in reply to Hants 177 all out).

Capped players- Compton 3, Robson 9, Rayner 8, Harris 1, Murtagh 2.

Top scorer Martin Andersson 25 not out.

The weather enabled Middlesex 2nd XI to escape with a draw.

An article in the South China Morning Post says that the reason why Anshy Rath has been unable to play for Middlesex recently is because he has found it difficult to get a UK sporting visa due to Hong Kong only being an associate member of ICC.

I assume Hong Kong coach Simon Cook is the former Middle and Kent player?

Maybe that's how we heard about Anshy Rath in the first place.

I understand our 2nds lost by 1 wicket in a 20/20 bash against Essex. Rogers and Out and Seaxe Man were there. We may hear more from them. I can't link scorecard

I think we failed to qualify for finals day.

In second match, Josh De Caires 26. I would say it is a given he will get a pro contract in due course.

Seaxe Man and myself spent a pleasant day at Coggeshall Town cricket club, where our Second XI were taking on Essex in a T20 double header. Two wins would have given us a chance of overtaking Hampshire on run rate in second place and qualifying for Finals' Day at Arundel next Thursday.

These two games formed part of the Coggeshall Town cricket festival and a large crowd by Second XI standards was present, with a marquee, sponsored lunch, beer festival and other food and drink outlets available.

We batted first in both games and registered 179/4 in game one, with 39 from Martin Andersson and an unbeaten 65 from 'keeper Robbie White.

Essex looked to be cruising to victory on 135/2 with several overs in hand with Velani's 88 looking like the key innings, although I believe he was dropped in the very first over when two of our fielders collided and the chance went down.

However, on his dismissal, Essex collapsed, losing 6/13 with Luke Holman taking 5/27 and the pacey Alfie Duke 2/24. We were looking to be in the box seat now, with Essex needing 28 from the last two overs with two wickets in hand.

However, a series of wides, no balls and a missed run out saw our hosts scramble home by a single wicket despite Martin Andersson clean bowling Ali in the final over.

With our hopes of qualification dashed, we batted first again in game two. Tom Lace made a useful 54, backed up by Josh De Caires' 26 and captain George Scott's unbeaten 68. We finished on 191/5.

We were more successful with the ball second time round and restricted Essex to 165/7, thus winning by 26 runs. Alfie Duke again bowled well with figures of 2/14 and there was a nasty looking shoulder injury to Savin Perera when he attempted to make a diving catch. He was incapacitated for a few minutes but was fortunately able to continue playing.

So we missed out by a couple of points, finishing third behind Sussex and Hampshire. However, it was good to see a Middlesex team who actually have an idea on how to play T20 cricket.

Middlesex 2nd XI made 339 thanks to Max Holden’s 51, Martin Andersson’s 61, Savin Perera’s 64 and Jack Davies’s 56. Surrey 2nd XI closed day one on 30-0.

The only member of our line-up with experience of playing for our 1st XI is James Harris, who is captain and batted at number three, where he made 35.

Considering the ground where this match is being staged is owned by the London School of Economics, hopefully none of our bowlers will be expensive.

James Harris is doing well in this match, he took 3-41 as Surrey 2nd XI declared on 276-4, then he reached 75 not out to take Middlesex 2nd XI to 137-4 for a lead of 200, which marks a recovery from 11-3.

Middlesex 2nd XI declared on 254-9 after James Harris made 146, to set Surrey 2nd XI a target of 318. When I looked at the score at tea, the match seemed set to be a draw. However, Surrey then accelerated and seemed likely to win, but somehow they finished on 314-7, meaning the match was drawn. Harris and Thilan Walallawita took three wickets apiece.

JW I don't think you realise how dramatic that match was.. Walallawita was bowling the last ball to Freddie Van Den Bergh with five runs to win with the wicket keeper standing about forty yards from the stumps wearing a helmet was a joy to behold. The umpires had to confer to decide whether or not this tactic was or not within the spirit of the game!!!

Quite a lengthy piece about Anshy Rath in the Middlesex section of The cricketer this month.

Too long to quote in full, but it looks like we bust a gut to try to get him signed up, but all avenues have now been exhausted.

He falls foul of the same rule that affected the Frinton club player. In other words he is too good to be classified as an amateur. By the looks of things, if he was cr*p, and nowhere near a pro contract, he'd be alright (how stupid is that?)

Another sad, and ironic twist is that he was born in November 1997. If he had been born before June 30th that year he would have been eligible for a british passport, so no problem (bad planning by Mr and Mrs Rath)

The sad thing is that it looks like he was good enough to make the grade (otherwise why did we try so hard?) He will only ever be able to play for Hong Kong- so the world will never know how good he might have been. Australians, Kiwis and South Africans have a choice to play first class cricket in their country of birth, or move to UK. For Rath the only way he could progress his game would have been to get a county contract, but it looks like that will never happen.

In this match, Robbie White scored 102 and 91, George Scott hit a first innings 84, Martin Andersson hit a second innings 58, and Ravi Patel took three first innings wickets.

After being set a target of 266, Lancashire 2nd XI close day three on 26-0.

With play before lunch only possible in one county championship match, at least the seconds have got underway against Sussex.
