I think the reason why Paul Stirling opened the bowling was partly because it is something Gloucestershire may not have expected (despite the practice of opening with a spinner not being uncommon), and partly to give Middlesex some flexibility with deciding who should bowl the overs, as it meant that our main bowlers weren’t obliged to all bowl four overs.

The main reason why we are captained by Brendon McCullum is because it was possible for Daniel Vettori to work with him in the build-up to the tournament, something which it was hoped would allow us to get our campaign off to a good start. Dawid Malan was not considered an option due to him and a few other players having come off the back of County Championship cricket, while I don’t think Eoin Morgan is keen to captain both England and Middlesex (or it could be that the club prefer him to play without the shackles of being captain). In saying that, the fact this was almost a standalone match coming six days before we play three matches in four days meant that it wasn’t vital that we aimed to be in peak form in this match. We weren’t in peak form, although hopefully this six-day rest will help, especially as it will be the first period in which we can practise our Twenty20 skills as a whole squad. Malan will captain us in the matches for which McCullum will be at the CPL.

It was a big moment when John Simpson was run out. The commentators’ version of events was that a spectator was injured the previous ball, so Simmo went over to check, which caused Simmo to be distracted.

This is such a brilliant report, I wish we could play you every week.

Those with weak hearts might not agree!!

Thank you.

Will you and your mates be coming to the return at Uxbridge?
