Team selection v Lancashire

Seriously need to consider a new captain for this game as James Franklin continues to offer the square root of **ck all !!

A returning Malan/Voges as captain would enable a better balance to the side.

This is a vital match, which makes it great news that Middlesex are likely to have at least some of Nick Gubbins, Dawid Malan, Paul Stirling, Toby Roland-Jones and Tim Murtagh available for this match, while Ryan Higgins is another option. Unless there are doubts about their fitness, it would be a big surprise if Malan and TRJ are left out, while Murtagh is nearly always selected when available, although I am not sure who would be left out, as the match v Hampshire at Uxbridge saw Max Holden be our top-scoring specialist batsman, James Harris take his opportunity to show what he can do, and Steven Finn and Tom Helm share 6 wickets in 21.1 overs (a wicket every 21 balls). If anyone has a poor match, there is likely to be justification for saying that a player left out should have instead been selected.

In order to retain our division one status, we could do with showing the same qualities that won us the 2016 title. Our performance in difficult conditions at Uxbridge gives me confidence.

I don’t know if we will enter this match with the intention of there being a result (which could of course be a defeat), or whether we would be quite happy to take the match as it comes and accept a draw if the weather and/or pitch makes it unlikely a win can be naturally achieved. I doubt Mike Hunt will take our preferences into account when preparing the pitch. I imagine our decisions could be influenced by how Somerset are performing v Surrey at The Oval and Yorkshire are performing v Warwickshire at Headingley. We would love to enter our final match v Somerset at Taunton on the back of a win, but would that mean we are willing to risk the possibility of losing to achieve that win? Or course, it we perform poorly in this match, all of these situations could be taken out of our hands.

Lancashire let us down when they lost v Somerset at Taunton, so we will have to see whether that result will have given them a kick up the backside or whether they will be poor once again. They will surely be motivated by a desire to remain in 2nd place.

I imagine there will be fair amount of coverage online and on social media about this round of matches, and no doubt it will be same in the final round. However, with England about to start a limited-overs series v West Indies, I am not sure whether there is a possibility of Sky showing another County Championship match this season.

A very difficult team selection v lancs. As I see it in our precarious league position a draw in no good we will have to win that is why in my opinion I have selected four pacemen in the following team I found it difficult to leave any players out.
Robson
Gubbins
Compton
Malan
Voges
Simpson
Harris
Roland Jones
Rayner
Murtagh
Finn

Eskinazi averaging 40 this season.

A better bet than Gubbins at the moment?

I said it was going to be difficult to leave out players. I think everyone will have a different team selection.

If we want Nick Gubbins in the side, than Nick Compton might be the one to miss out.

Compo has the better average this season 32.85, but it is worth pointing out he has only passed 50 once in nine matches (when he went on to make 120)

On the other hand, Gubbo, with the poorer average 24.15 has got past 50 three times in only 7 matches, which suggests if he can get past the new ball, he is more likely to make the bigger score.

And the other interesting one is Paul Stirling, who I suspect wouldn't get in to most people's first XI with everyone available.

He is averaging a perfectly respectable 37.09 from his seven appearances this year, but has a strike rate of 71.33 considerably better than any of our other front line batsmen, and we need to win, so might be worth considering (although I don't see it happening)

Guess which front line batsman has the second best strike rate. Sam Robson 58.89. We never pick him for T20, but it's not like he has ever had a chance in T20 and failed. It's just that when he broke in to the championship side there wasn't a vacancy in the T20 side, and that has remained the case ever since.

Compo strike rate 39.14 the lowest from our front line batsmen. Of course there are reasons- need to dig in if we have lost a couple of early wickets, but if we are trying to be positive, get as many batting points as possible, and get in a winning position as quickly as possible, there are more positive, attacking possibilities than Compo.

Chunky.
Why not pick your eleven which you think should face lancashire.

Until recently, the season had been going very well for Stevie Eskinazi, who is one of only two players to have played all of Middlesex’s County Championship matches so far, alongside John Simpson. However, Eski’s last eight Championship scores have been 0, 7, 2, 13, 6, 5, 13 and 3*, so even though he made several big scores in his preceding innings (as well in Twenty20 matches during this timeframe), that could count against him if there are other players we feel more keen to squeeze into the side.

I doubt Paul Stirling will play, although if he does, then I would be excited at the prospect of him scoring quick runs and/or providing a spin option.

Okay- my XI (not the same thing as will happen)

Robson, Gubbins, Eskinazi, Malan, Voges, Simpson, Stirling, Harris, Murtah/Rayner, TRJ, Finn.

From 430 miles away, I have no idea if spin will be a factor- so Rayner if it is, and Murtagh if it isn't.

It might be heresy to leave out Murtagh, but we need as many runs from tail as possible. Harris has the potential to score more runs than Murtagh, and on the evidence of the last couple of matches will be no less effective with the ball.

You will note I've left out Franklin (that's the 'but it won't happen bit)

Gus is normally completely unsentimental (losing Gareth Berg when he still had a year on his contract, because injury was 'career ending) so I was surprised when Franklin was handed the captaincy. He's handy to have around as a squad player, when others are unavailable, but not, in my view, an automatic first pick. It isn't his fault he unbalances the side. Most of his good performances for us (and there have been some) have been when he has needed to bat at 5, when others have been unavailable.

Chunky.
I notice we have both left Franklin out from our teams.

Just thinking maybe we should play Holden and Helm youngsters don't seem to fear much these days. Selection is going to be very difficult there are lots of combinations let's hope the selection of the team proves to be the right one in the end.

I would drop Rayner and Franklin and Compton and might even commit the ultimate heresy and omit Finn and keep Helm and Harris. So that gives us Robson Gubbins Eskinazi Malan Voges Simpson Stirling Harris TRJ Helm Murtagh. I assume it won't be a turning wicket and we have 3 part time spinners available.

Of course it won't happen.

Robbo,Gubbo,Eskio,Malao,Holdo,Simmo,Rayneo,RoJo,Harryboyo,Helmyo and Finno.

No time for loyalty etc this week or next, put the guys up front who are going to do the job for us.

Not an overseas player in sight, Franklin is a shot bolt and Adam looked as though his summer will not be a good one at Uxbridge. No Compo either but he has seriously unimpressed me this season. Stirlo not a red ball player for this type of game, too inclined to just give it the wrong shot at the wrong time in games where runs on the board first innings will be vital.

I stand by to be called a heretic for dropping Murts but he wasn't a well teddy the last I saw of him at Uxbridge on Thursday and everyone will need to be 100% if we are going to do anything in our remaining games of any good.

Malao skippers the side and is backup spin option along with Robbos balletic run up and drop a few downs smiling smiley

My team:

Robson
Compton
Holden
Malan
Voges
Simpson
Harris
Roland Jones
Rayner
Murtagh (Helm if Murtagh not fit)
Finn

I'd stick with Compton as he has the ability to dig in. Nothing to be lost as far as I can see in choosing Holden over Eskinazi and Gubbins, given their recent form. And sadly, any team we pick looks stronger without Franklin.

Other than John Simpson, there are hardly any players who I would consider to be certain to play in this match. An argument could be made that those returning from England duty or injury have no right to walk straight back into the Middlesex side, but it is not like it is a winning or successful side.

Unless the pitch is expected to take spin, it could be a sensible idea to go in without a spinner. Ollie Rayner and Nathan Sowter need not worry, as they could both find themselves playing v Somerset at Taunton the following week. However, the possibility of the pitch at Lord’s taking spin cannot be discounted, as Middlesex v Worcestershire in September 2010 saw Moeen Ali take 5-36 in the first innings and Shakib Al Hasan take 7-32 in the second innings (we didn’t even select a specialist spinner), while Middlesex v Lancashire in September 2012 saw Ravi Patel take 4-126 and 4-72.

I am not sure who the announcer will be for this match, as I believe that for many matches at Lord’s this season, that role was performed by Ralph Dellor, who sadly died earlier this month aged 69. When I heard the announcements at Lord's, I initially assumed they were being made by someone in their 20’s or 30’s, so I was surprised to learn that they were made by someone far older than that, which lends credence to Test Match Special producer Adam Mountford writing on Twitter that Dellor “had an ageless voice”.

No spinner? That would do wonders for the over rate. Particularly if Higgins is not playing.

Lords and the Oval should both have dry weather all week, though mostly cloudy, so the light may be an issue at times. Leeds may have more sunshine, but it also looks as if there will be rain on day 2 and especially day 3.

Likely to be a bit chillier than where you are, Beefy...
