ECB give Glamorgan £1millon NOT to bid for tests

So- the ECB don't want Glamorgan to bid for any tests, and are willing to pay them compensation not to.

It would have helped Durham if ECB had given them £1 million hand out not to bid (instead of just taking tests away from them).

I'm not sure what to make of this. Does it mean the ECB were afraid Glamorgan (possibly with Welsh assembly help) might have been able to outbid somewhere else they'd rather be instead?

Does that mean that any county can contact the ECB and say, can we have £1m if we don't bid for a test (TIC). (Sm100)

Can I look forward to a handout for not applying for the Arsenal manager job, when Mr Wenger vacates it in 2025?

Apparently there is another Times article (which I can't find online) which says test grounds not getting a test will get 500k for each year they fail to get a test, so Hampshire are in line to get 2.5 million over the next 5 years. Normally a county will get 500k each year. Glamorgan are believed to have received over 1 million because they asked to have the money in one large upfront payment (therefore overall they get less than if they had taken 500k a year)

The assumption must be that a successful test earns a county 500k plus in profits (after bidding a sum of money to host it), so that is the compensation to be paid for failing to secure a test. However, poor weather, less attractive opponents, must mean you can't guarantee a profit.

Poor old Durham were royally stitched up. Test match status taken away from them, so they won't be getting 2.5 million over 5 years, and they really need the money. Tests in May, a couple of weeks ahead of a test in Headingley meant they were always going to be up against it.

Non test ground counties demanding to be told what is going on.

To add- To me this smacks of 'Divide and rule'.

This payout to test counties will ensure they always vote the way Graves wants.

Can I have half a million for not hosing tests in my back garden?

Chunky - you seem to have anticipated Andy Nash's views. Apparently, he was seen as a potential ECB chairman. Step up someone we all know?

This moves things closer to the full on extermination of County Cricket.

Eight Test ground status counties in big cities........... Gosh, we could have an eight team city based T20 tournament round that!

Then, the wage bill for the players in each franchise gets so big; .....oooops, we have to economise, and so, sorry oter counties, we're going to have to economise somewhere, so after the contractual period tied bung is over, what happens then.

Even worse, where does it leave The Middle, as a county never in a position to stage a Test?

It seems that most websites have posted the news about "Andy Nash" [www.bbc.co.uk]

I wonder if it is on the ECB site!!

Cricinfo article-

Don't forget Yorkshire owe the Graves family trust 22 million quid, and were desperate for The Ashes test in 2023 (which they got) The vote on who got tests was taken just a few weeks ago, Had Graves told test counties they would get 500k compensation for every year they didn't host a test before Ashes vote took place?

Suggestioms in above article Somerset were told they were well placed to get one of the T20 franchise venues, then once their vote was safely in the bag, they got nothing.

Make no mistake about it, cricket is in big trouble. Even top clubs like Lancashire are worried, and some of the smaller first-class counties could go bust or be forced to merge.

When was that written? Oh, 2004.

What worries many of us is the extent to which this chimes with the view from some that we only need 8 First Class counties. The Middle are not members of that magic circle.

Getting murkier.....

'Payment to Glamorgan was to enable them to settle a debt with a creditor' and not to not hold tests.

So why not do the same for Durham?

Or is it now being described in this way to stop it looking like cash for votes? If it is to help settle a debt I presume Glamorgan will have to pay the money back over the next few years- otherwise they have received preferential treatment over durham.

Durham's payment came with penalty points in all competitions, relegation (ok that's irrelevant as far as Glamorgan's concerned) and a hefty deduction on their salary cap.

*twiddles thumbs and waits for the ECB's next move*
