I expected that today’s signing would be a player with more experience and reputation than Ashton Agar. However, after reading about Agar’s performances at the Big Bash, it sounds like he could be a handy player in Middlesex’s Twenty20 campaign, and that having him is preferable to a so-called superstar who may not have as much to give physically and mentally.

Agar has played 15 internationals in all formats for Australia, and has enjoyed a few good days with either the bat or ball during that time, so as long as the majority of his Middlesex appearances see him contributing in at least one discipline, he will have done a good job. Whatever he does in the rest of his career, he could end up being best remembered for surprisingly playing ahead of Nathan Lyon in the first two matches of the 2013 Ashes, and marking his Test debut by scoring 98 to give him the record for the highest score by a number 11. This earned him a promotion to number 8 for his next three innings in the series, although the fact he only took two wickets in those matches meant he had to wait until a tour of Bangladesh in August/September 2017 to return to the Test side.

Agar will get an opportunity to meet up with our players when Middlesex and Australia meet at Lord’s in a 50-over match on Saturday 9th June.

As it sounds like Agar is seen as an all-rounder, I imagine we will play most or all of our matches with a spinner alongside him, and I imagine that spinner will be Nathan Sowter considering he was an ever-present in 2017. However, regardless of whether we think a pitch may take more spin than usual, I can’t see us playing two spinners in addition to Agar, so that is more bad news for Ravi Patel, who couldn’t get into our Twenty20 side in 2017 despite some supporters hoping he would play.

I am satisfied that our Twenty20 squad will be in good hands with Daniel Vettori as coach, Agar as an overseas player, and possibly another overseas signing to come. However, we will have to see how we will do in the Royal London Cup.

You have more faith than I do in Dan Vettori. He did not exactly make a big difference to our T20 fortunes last year. Hopefully this year will be different. I find the signing of Agar rather underwhelming & as you say it does not bode well for the future of Ravi Patel who may become frustrated by a lack of opportunities & look for another county.

What no Brendon McCullum!!
Whats going on at our club?
With 12/1 on offer for us to win the T20 it might be worth a £5 wager.

Well, we've got ourselves a young Aussie all rounder, who is already on their National Team radar.

Not really an all rounder.

His wickets come at a cost of more than 50, so he is more a stand-in for Nick Gubbins than a James Franklin replacement.

It does prove we mean business though.

We have Ashton Agar for the entire Vitality t20 Blast, as well as a flexible arrangement with Hilton Cartwright whilst several cricketers are unavailable.

Middlesex’s second Twenty20 overseas player is expected to be a middle-order batsman. Thankfully, it is looking unlikely that Brendon McCullum will return.

Middlesex have posted a mysterious Tweet, which implies that an announcement will be made at 1:00pm tomorrow. Maybe it will be about a second overseas player for our Twenty20 campaign.

We now know that Dwayne Bravo has been registered for the opening six matches as our second overseas all-rounder alongside Ashton Agar (if we discount Hilton Cartwright).
