In the course of checking out something else (I was looking to see if Michael Carberry was playing out for Leicestershire 2's- he wasn't) I discovered that Don Manuwelge (formerly of our academy) is turning out for Kent 2's.

Middlesex 2nd XI won by 226 runs.

It was great to see that Sam Robson got a century and that James Fuller did so too as well as took six wickets.

Josh DeCaires (son of M A Atherton) in the side v Hampshire.

No Scott or Holden, so presumably they will both be in the squad to face Leicestershire.

Edit to add- and Arthur Godsal playing for Hants 2's.

Middle 229 all out.

Old boy Godsal 5-38 (not sure he ever had that good a return for us).

Hampshire 2nd XI closed day one on 223-3, so it was a good day for them.

Day two didn’t go much better for Middlesex 2nd XI, as Hampshire 2nd XI took their score to 487, and we closed on 73-5, so are still 185 away from making Hants bat again.

For a club who have a few players unavailable and who have reached the Royal London Cup final, Hants' line-up is surprisingly strong, with Ian Holland, Sean Ervine and Kyle Abbott all included.

Middlesex 2nd XI added 225 for the final five wickets to reach 298 and set Hampshire 2nd XI a target of 41, but Hants were able to win by nine wickets.

Tim Barber has spoken to ECB Reporters Network about how his season is going.

We ended up losing both games to a strong Kent team, which included Alex Blake, James Tredwell and Will Gidman.

Our side was a little weaker than usual due to first team call ups.

Kent made 188/6 in the first game, aided by some errant bowling at the start and end of their innings. Wicket keeper Ollie Robinson top scored with 63.

Our reply looked dead in the water after the loss of Tom Lace and Martin Andersson, plus the needless run out of Nathan Sowter. However, a battling, unbeaten knock of 89 by Jack Davies nearly got us home, aided by Archie Carter with 40 in a 100 run stand. Sadly, we ended up on 180/6, losing by 8 runs.

The second game saw Kent win with ease. They batted first again, pushing Will Gidman up the order to open and this paid dividends as he made 79. Big hitting Alex Blake crashed 65 from 30 balls and Imran Qayyum hit 26 off 11 at the end, leaving us to chase a daunting 205/8.

Despite a good innings from Martin Andersson with 74 and some late runs from Luke Hollman and Thilan Walallawita, we were never really in the hunt and Kent cruised home by 57 runs.

Our record is now one win and three losses with six games to go, and it's going to take some doing for us to make the last four at Arundel on Thursday 9 August.

We play two T20's against Hants today.

First match-

I don't know if Stevie Eskinazi asked to play, but he is the only person involved in the Kent championship game to appear. I had wondered if a few others might (as in preparation for our first team T20 campaign). There are still two games on Monday against Glamorgan for the proposed first teamers to practise in.

I was able to catch the end of Hants innings in 2nd game and our run chase.

You can always tell strength of sides by the amount of names on back of shirts. Hants had Crane, Ervine, Wood and McManus. We had Eski, Sowter and Lace. There were lots of no names.

It was the Eski and Rabbit partnership that saw us through to chase 146. It was pleasing we won two games with a weakened 2nd X1.

We then watched England v Belgium 2nd X1 football in Richmond club house

First T20 v Glamorgan-

I thought our first team might opt for some practise before Surrey on Thursday, but not in the first game at least.

Fulham Des and I ventured over to Newport CC yesterday to watch the Second XI share the T20 spoils with Glamorgan.

Our hosts fielded a very strong side in the first game, presumably in preparation for their T20 Blast opening game at the Ageas Bowl on Friday. They included the likes of Donald, Cooke, Hogan, Ingram and Meschede, whilst we only had three players with squad numbers - Martin Andersson, Tom Lace and Robbie White.

Glamorgan clocked up a formidable 207/5 in their 20 overs, and despite a terrific unbeaten 105 from Martin Andersson, we were never in the hunt and lost by 32 runs.

Glamorgan made many changes for the second game, but still included Nick Selman, who played a big role in their challenging total of 174/6.

This target was much more to our liking and a 76 run partnership between Andersson and Lace got us off to a good start, before Tom was run out.

Andersson was eventually dismissed for 64 and it was left to Robbie White to try to steer us home. Just when it looked beyond us, his cool head, aided by Joe Cracknell then Lincoln, got us over the line with two balls to spare, ensuring victory by 7 wickets.

Newport CC is located in Spytty Park (a former home of Newport County FC) in a sports complex around three miles out of town.

It is a pleasant ground, and would be appreciated by lovers of pylons, of which there are plenty in the vicinity. More enjoyable was the supply of cold cider at £2.90 per pint.
