Glamorgan and Middlesex today began a Second Eleven Championship match at Neath, with the hosts closing day one on 409-6, which wasn’t a great surprise considering their line-up has more 1st XI experience than ours. Five of the wickets were shared between Thilan Walallawita and Kristian Martin, who bowled 68 out of 109 overs today.

Glamorgan 2nd XI declared on their overnight score. Middlesex 2nd XI reached 263-6 before declaring thanks to 47 from Tom Lace, 57 from Martin Andersson and 83 from 23-year-old Dan Lincoln of Berkshire, which was a nice way to mark American Independence Day. Glamorgan then reached 18-3 and were 164 ahead, which I assume is the close of play score.

80-5 at close of play. Four wickets for the bloke whose name makes it sound like he'll be supporting the wrong team on Saturday.

Just to correct an earlier post I made. We do, in fact, have twelve group matches to play in the T20 group stages. Our current record is four wins and four losses and we stand fifth in the table on eight points, four points behind the leaders.

We have two matches to play against Essex at Radlett on Monday, and finish off with two at Taunton Vale against Somerset on Monday 23 July. I think we'll need to win all of these if we are to make the top two.

I went along to the first day at Neath with Fulham Des and it was a tough day for our young team in the sweltering heat. Second XI games finish at 6.30 or after 104 overs, whichever is the later and on this day, 109 overs were bowled by us, the majority by spinners Thilan Walallawita and the enthusiastic Kristian Martin, as pointed out by Jonathan.

Both bowled with credit and took wickets, especially Thilan who had the home batsmen in trouble early in his spell.

We ended up getting a creditable draw out of the game and had a chance of winning in the final session.

Whilst Neath is perhaps not on everyone's list to visit, the cricket club is excellent with plenty of seating available and is adjacent to Neath RFC, a splendid old rugby ground.

Finally, having witnessed Martin Andersson's superb 105 not out against pretty much Glamorgan's full strength T20 side, surely he should be given a T20 chance for us in the near future, especially as they invariably give us a pasting in the competition each year.

Two T20's against Essex today.

Ollie Rayner's time with Hampshire appears to be over as he took 3-29 in first game.

Essex made an awe inspiring 240-7 from their 20 overs-

To which Middle replied with an almost as impressive 222-8. Max Holden 112 off 51 balls.

I think Ollie went to Hampshire as cover for Dawson and Crane, both of whom were absent or injured at the time but have been back for a couple of weeks.

Middlesex 2nd XI won the second match by seven wickets with 20 balls to spare thanks to 41 from Tom Lace and 50 not out from George Scott.

It must be within the realms of possibility that Ollie Rayner could return to Hampshire, as Mason Crane is out for the rest of the season. It will probably depend on the fitness of Hants’ other spinners and on whether Rayner made much of an impression in his initial loan there.

Middlesex and Essex today began a Second Eleven Championship match at Uxbridge. Robbie White’s 116 and George Scott’s 105 got us to 233-2, but we were eventually all out for 297. Essex closed day one on 92-1.

Arrived just before lunch to be told we were chasing a deficit of 146 to make Essex bat again.

We went one down with Tom Lace dismissed straight away. Thoughts were, it was a nailed on draw, but Essex wheeled away in the heat to remove 8 of our batsmen in the two afternoon sessions.

Their left arm spinner from the Gatting Way End posed a threat throughout and their pace guys put in a shift from the Pavilion End as they smelt a possible victory.

They must have slept well last night.

That Essex were denied was largely due to a fine 65no from James Harris, who batted sensibly with aplomb through the last session. First innings centurions George Scott and Robbie White added valuable runs earlier.

Hands were shaken at 5,40 with ten overs left and Essex conceding that they were denied.

Four day friendly against Kent at Gareth Southgate (London Underground have renamed the station for two days as a reward for being losing semi-finalists)

Middlesex 2nd XI were all out for 190 and incurred a 126-run first innings deficit, with Robbie White’s 44 the top scorer. Kent 2nd XI closed day two on 209-4, so are 335 ahead.

Kent 2nd XI were all out for 300, with Blake Cullen taking four wickets in nine overs. This left Middlesex 2nd XI requiring 427 to win, and we closed day three on 266-6, with Tom Lace having scored 81 and Joe Cracknell 59 not out, so we have an outside chance of achieving this big target.

Ollie Rayner bowled 16.1 overs and Martin Andersson bowled 8.5 overs in Kent's second innings, so one of them evidently suffered an injury, although I am not sure which. Neither bowled any no-balls, so that rules out the possible explanation of someone having been ordered out of the attack. Andersson has batted in our second innings, but Rayner is yet to do so.
