We remember Bob Gale who chaired the club's cricket committee and was a long-serving member of the former General Committee. He was later President (2001-03) and a Life Vice-President.

As an opening batsman, he scored a double century versus Glamorgan at Rodney Parade, Newport in July 1962.

He was the club's ninth oldest living first-class cricketer at his death aged 84 years and 131 days.

I remember seeing him in the first ever game I went to watch Middlesex, opening the batting with Jack Robertson. Later he formed a very effective opening partnership with Eric Russell.

If I remember rightly Bob Gale featured in one of your near-namesake's best performances. At lunch Fred had taken all five wickets to fall and Bob Gale said he would give Freddie a crate of champagne if he took all ten. Fred keeps on taking wickets and Bob is brought on at the other end (leg spin?) to give him a chance to protect his wallet ... and takes a wicket, leaving Fred with a nine-for. Not sure if Gale took the last wicket or one before that but I think I've got the essentials right.

When Richard Johnson took all ten the story was that the odd sitter or two went down at the other end late in the Derbyshire innings! No champagne-based incentive there, I guess.

Russell and Gale. Remember those two well enough.Sad news about Bob Gale.

He scored a decent number of runs for the Club, In his time on uncovered wickets.

As a boy, I would sometimes wander up to Finchley CC on a Sunday afternoon. This must have been in the mid to late '60s and sometimes Bob Gale would be playing. It was always a pleasure if he was, as he was obviously above club standard and the bowling suffered some damage!

Yes Adelaide it was vs Cambridge University and Titmus FJ took the first 9 wickets and Gale took the last one, caught and bowled. I imagine he was so surprised to get a wicket that he forgot to drop it to let Titmus get all 10.
